Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz were indicted Sunday on various charges related to a scheme to rig bets on pitches thrown in-game, federal authorities announced.

Clase and Ortiz were placed on administrative leave during the 2025 MLB season as the league investigated the two pitchers. Ortiz was the first to be pulled from Cleveland’s lineup on July 13; Clase followed two weeks later. MLB was investigating specific pitches thrown by Clase and Ortiz in potential connection with sports betting.

Ortiz was arrested in Boston as part of the indictment. At the time of the announcement, Clase had not yet been taken into custody.

Per the indictment, Clase and Ortiz allegedly participated in a scheme to intentionally throw balls where bettors in the know could wager whether the pitch will be a ball or a strike. The scheme is said to have begun as far back as May 2023, with Clase, and Ortiz becoming involved later. Prosecutors allege Ortiz was paid $5,000 to throw a ball when on the mound on June 15th against the Mariners, and Clase was paid $5,000 as well to facilitate the scheme. On June 27, against the Cardinals, it happened again and the pair received $7,000 each for their participation. The Guardians lost both games in question.

Clase and Ortiz are facing fraud, conspiracy, and bribery charges. The indictment reads that, if convicted, they could face a maximum of 65 years in prison.

“MLB contacted federal law enforcement at the outset of its investigation and has fully cooperated throughout the process,” the league said in a statement to ESPN. “We are aware of the indictment and today's arrest, and our investigation is ongoing.”

As it currently stands, Clase and Ortiz are both on non-disciplinary paid leave from the Guardians.

Before being put on leave, Ortiz posted a 4.36 ERA with 96 strikeouts in 2025. Clase, as a closer for Cleveland, posted a 3.23 ERA in 48 games with 23 saves.

Luis Ortiz’s attorney gives statement on betting scheme charges

A few hours after Ortiz was arrested, the pitcher’s attorney gave a statement denying any wrongdoing in regard to the two pitches cited by the indictment.

Every member of the Dodgers bullpen was put on notice Monday night when K-Pop star V from the blockbuster boy band BTS threw a surprisingly epic first pitch at Los Angeles's game vs. the Reds.

The left-handed pitch—which was deemed a strike—sent stan Twitter (as it is still colloquially known) into a frenzy, as surprised Dodgers fans, meanwhile, called on the front office to sign him.

PHILADELPHIA — In their meeting before Game 1 of the National League division series, Dodgers hitting coach Aaron Bates gave his players some advice: At some point, something will happen to make the 45,000 red-clad phanatics in Citizens Bank Park go nuts. Instead of letting the noise get to them, the Dodgers should just focus on silencing the crowd. 

As it turned out, two games into this series, the Phillies’ bats have done that all by themselves. They staged a ninth-inning comeback attempt but still fell short, 4–3, in Game 2 to bring themselves one loss from winter. 

Indeed, until that ultimately unsuccessful rally, the loudest sound of the night was the response as the Phillies’ stadium experience staff insisted on turning off the lights, turning up the music and playing closer Jhoan Duran’s flame- and spider-themed graphics as he entered a game his team was losing by three: a chorus of boos. (The opprobrium only increased once the game was over: One caller on WIP 94.1 suggested that an appropriate punishment for DH Kyle Schwarber would be to ban him from Wawa.)

It was hard to blame the fans. The starting pitching has been as good as the Phillies could have hoped for after ace Zack Wheeler was diagnosed with first a blood clot and then venous thoracic outlet syndrome in August. Cristopher Sánchez, the NL WAR leader with 8.0, allowed two runs through 5 ⅔ innings in Game 1; Jesús Luzardo allowed two in six-plus in Game 2. And outside of one Matt Strahm four-seamer that caught enough of the plate for Teoscar Hernández to hammer it for a three-run homer, the relievers have largely generated the strikeouts and weak contact they sought. 

But the offense—especially the $709 million top three in the order—has not resembled the lineup that slugged .431 this year, fourth in the sport. Through the first two games, shortstop Trea Turner, Schwarber and first baseman Bryce Harper have combined for two singles, four walks and 11 strikeouts in 25 plate appearances. The only extra-base hits have come from catcher J.T. Realmuto (a triple in Game 1 and a double in Game 2), part-time right fielder Max Kepler (a double in Game 1 and a triple in Game 2) and Nick Castellanos, the other half of the right field platoon (a double in Game 2). As a team the Phillies have a .601 OPS this series. They are the only team still in the tournament that has not yet hit a home run. 

Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz learned he'd been named the American League's Rookie of the Year in an ideal location Tuesday—far from Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, where he built his star in 2025.

"I was in Hawaii celebrating a teammate getting married, so me and (shortstop) Jacob Wilson, actually, were in the same hotel room as it was kind of going on," Kurtz told Thursday afternoon in an interview promoting the Friday release of the video game . "The parents were watching the broadcast. The girlfriend, all those family members, got texts from them. Called them right away."

Winning the award unanimously—with Wilson, his teammate, coming in third—provided a fitting coda to one of the most dominant rookie seasons of the last decade. Kurtz slashed .290/.383/.619 with 36 home runs, 86 RBIs, and an impressive 5.4 bWAR in just 117 games. His efforts earned him a Silver Slugger in addition to becoming his franchise's first Rookie of the Year since pitcher Andrew Bailey in 2009.

Appropriately, a list of his influences teem with former Rookies of the Year. Three of the four players Kurtz cited as inspirations won the award.

"When I was a kid, it was Ryan Howard. I'm from the Central (Pennsylvania) area, so we grew up Phillies fans," Kurtz said. "When I got a little older in high school I loved watching Bryce Harper… Jim Thome is another guy who I didn't really get to watch live, but I've seen plenty of video of his swing. Another comparison—Yordan Alvarez, a newer guy, in college I tried to model my swing off of him."

Kurtz's scholarship has made him a face of an up-and-coming Athletics team filled with young talent, as right fielder Lawrence Butler, first baseman and left fielder Tyler Soderstrom, and Wilson all produced for the Sacramento-based team in '25.

Their sense of competition and camaraderie, however, is not limited to the diamond.

"Lawrence Butler I'll play a lot (of with)," Kurtz said. "(Infielder) Max Schuemann is another guy. Jacob (Wilson) is more of a guy."

Anfield erupted. It really did. That was the performance Arne Slot’s Liverpool have been searching for this season, with Alexis Mac Allister’s second-half header putting Real Madrid to the sword in the Champions League.

Real Madrid were overwhelmed, enervated, reduced to mincemeat in a similar fashion to last season’s win over the La Liga giants, and it could have been a wider, more sobering margin for Europe’s biggest hitters, but for a strong performance from Thiabaut Courtois between the posts.

The win over Aston Villa in the Premier League at the weekend stopped the rot, ended the four-game losing run, but this was a display of a different nature, the Reds going from strength to strength and reminding Europe of their prowess.

There have been many issues and imbalances within Slot’s squad this season, but this was an emphatic performance, outstanding from every department, both in possession and against the ball.

Epitomising this mini-revival on Merseyside, of course, was Conor Bradley.

Bradley proves too much for Real (again)

Not for the first time over the past year, Bradley came up trumps against Real Madrid’s devastating frontline, this time focusing his sights on Vinicius Junior, who was ineffective all evening against the Northern Irish star.

Content creator George Scaife remarked that he had “the game of his life” against Los Blancos, winning all three of his tackles, winning eight duels and recovering so many balls.

With Jeremie Frimpong sidelined with an injury, the 22-year-old has a real chance to kick on now and nail down a starting berth after a shaky start to the campaign which has presented him as unsure and somewhat unfit at times.

There have been times when Bradley’s place in the Liverpool side has been called into question, but he has the ability to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made an unsuccessful return to Anfield on Tuesday, in the long run.

However, there’s another star who has become their main man, having looked endangered in the starting line-up after the summer spending spree.

There’s no question that Liverpool have been woefully out of sorts this season, but Dominik Szoboszlai has been a pillar of strength throughout the opening months.

Effortlessly good as an all-action midfielder and tenacious and industrious in a makeshift right-back berth, Szoboszlai’s energy and enterprise on the ball have been second to none, and he has been hailed as “our most important player” by one prominent Reds fan, also admitting that he “would be one of the ones to drop out of the XI” after a summer of spending that saw Florian Wirtz signed for a record-breaking £116m fee.

But the Hungary skipper has been nothing short of sensational, and he was once again the star of the show, peppering the Real Madrid goal and assisting the winner with a delightful set-piece delivery.

The Liverpool Echo saw it fit to hand the 24-year-old a 9/10 match rating, ahead, even, of the goalscoring Mac Allister, producing a masterful creative display and working overtime to overwhelm the Spanish midfield.

While the likes of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk continue to stand proud as the leaders in Slot’s squad, there’s little question that Szoboszlai is outplaying the lot this term, and as the Reds click into gear, raising their collective level, Szoboszlai could hit staggering individual heights.
