Better than Bradley: Liverpool star looked sellable, now he's their star man

Anfield erupted. It really did. That was the performance Arne Slot’s Liverpool have been searching for this season, with Alexis Mac Allister’s second-half header putting Real Madrid to the sword in the Champions League.

Real Madrid were overwhelmed, enervated, reduced to mincemeat in a similar fashion to last season’s win over the La Liga giants, and it could have been a wider, more sobering margin for Europe’s biggest hitters, but for a strong performance from Thiabaut Courtois between the posts.

The win over Aston Villa in the Premier League at the weekend stopped the rot, ended the four-game losing run, but this was a display of a different nature, the Reds going from strength to strength and reminding Europe of their prowess.

There have been many issues and imbalances within Slot’s squad this season, but this was an emphatic performance, outstanding from every department, both in possession and against the ball.

Epitomising this mini-revival on Merseyside, of course, was Conor Bradley.

Bradley proves too much for Real (again)

Not for the first time over the past year, Bradley came up trumps against Real Madrid’s devastating frontline, this time focusing his sights on Vinicius Junior, who was ineffective all evening against the Northern Irish star.

Content creator George Scaife remarked that he had “the game of his life” against Los Blancos, winning all three of his tackles, winning eight duels and recovering so many balls.

With Jeremie Frimpong sidelined with an injury, the 22-year-old has a real chance to kick on now and nail down a starting berth after a shaky start to the campaign which has presented him as unsure and somewhat unfit at times.

There have been times when Bradley’s place in the Liverpool side has been called into question, but he has the ability to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made an unsuccessful return to Anfield on Tuesday, in the long run.

However, there’s another star who has become their main man, having looked endangered in the starting line-up after the summer spending spree.

Liverpool star is becoming one of world's best

There’s no question that Liverpool have been woefully out of sorts this season, but Dominik Szoboszlai has been a pillar of strength throughout the opening months.

Effortlessly good as an all-action midfielder and tenacious and industrious in a makeshift right-back berth, Szoboszlai’s energy and enterprise on the ball have been second to none, and he has been hailed as “our most important player” by one prominent Reds fan, also admitting that he “would be one of the ones to drop out of the XI” after a summer of spending that saw Florian Wirtz signed for a record-breaking £116m fee.

But the Hungary skipper has been nothing short of sensational, and he was once again the star of the show, peppering the Real Madrid goal and assisting the winner with a delightful set-piece delivery.

The Liverpool Echo saw it fit to hand the 24-year-old a 9/10 match rating, ahead, even, of the goalscoring Mac Allister, producing a masterful creative display and working overtime to overwhelm the Spanish midfield.

While the likes of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk continue to stand proud as the leaders in Slot’s squad, there’s little question that Szoboszlai is outplaying the lot this term, and as the Reds click into gear, raising their collective level, Szoboszlai could hit staggering individual heights.

Another Chiesa: Slot's treatment of Liverpool star is a "sackable offence"

Liverpool have a shrewd solution to one of their biggest problems this season.

Telling MLB Wild Card Stat Spells Trouble for Teams That Lost Game 1

There's bad news for MLB teams that lost Game 1 of their wild-card series on Tuesday. Based on past results, it's unlikely that they'll come back to win the series.

As USA Today's Bob Nightengale noted, since MLB moved to its current postseason format in 2022, there have been 12 wild-card series. Ten of those 12 series have ended in sweeps. In addition to that, no team that lost the first game has wound up advancing to the next round.

That's really bad news for the Guardians, Padres, Yankees, and Reds, who all lost the opening games of their respective matchups on Tuesday. All head into Wednesday facing elimination, and the numbers suggest they'll all wind up on vacation soon.

The only teams to force a third game under the current format were the Mets in 2022 and the Brewers in 2024.

The 2022 Mets were hosting the Padres at Citi Field, but lost the opener of the series 7-1. They won Game 2 7-3, but lost Game 3 6-0 in the infamous Joe Musgrove ear game.

Last season, the Brewers lost Game 1 of their wild-card series against the Mets 8-4 at American Family Field. They bounced back in Game 2 to win 5-3, but New York bested Milwaukee 4-2 in Game 3.

We'll see if any of the trailing teams can reverse the trend this year.

Revealed: Why Man Utd signed Benjamin Sesko ahead of former Ruben Amorim favourite Viktor Gyokeres

It has been revealed that Manchester United opted to target Benjamin Sesko over Viktor Gyokeres in the summer, as the Red Devils believed that the young Slovenian was better suited to their project and style of play based on data. Sesko has had a slow start to life in the Premier League, but the club retain faith that the 22-year-old has a bright future at Old Trafford and is a big part of the club's future under Ruben Amorim.

United choose to pursue Sesko over Gyokeres, reports reveal

According to reports by The Mirror, United considered the signings of both Sesko and Gyokeres, but decided to prioritise the former as the ideal centrepiece to their new-look attack under Amorim.

The former RB Leipzig striker has only scored twice for the Red Devils thus far and has found himself in and out of the side following his £74million ($96.8m) move, but the club remain patient with the highly rated young forward.

Reports continue that Sesko’s running stats were crucial in his signing, as per The Times. Mike Sansoni joined the club as director of data in the summer following 11 years with the Mercedes Formula 1 team, and has led the new focus on data across the Red Devils’ recruitment process.

Sansoni works closely with Director of Football Jason Wilcox and is leading an initiative for the club to become a “fully data-driven club which will lead to success on and off the pitch”, using his extensive range of data on tens of thousands of players. This data led to the marquee signing of Sesko, who will hope to prove the club right in Red over the coming months.

AdvertisementGettySlow start for Sesko at Old Trafford after big-money move

Sesko’s two Premier League goals so far this season have come in defeat at Brentford and the victory at home to Sunderland at Old Trafford, which marked the beginning of United’s three-game winning streak which included a historic 2-1 win at Anfield.

The 22-year-old struck 39 goals in two impressive seasons with Leipzig, scoring 13 times in the Bundesliga last term and four in the Champions League. He is still developing into his role at United and will hope that his strong data-led profile leads to strong results on the pitch with his new employers – though he is currently out injured.

Gyokeres, meanwhile, has scored four times in the Premier League for leaders Arsenal and six times overall, following his £63.4m ($83m) move from Sporting Lisbon, where he was prolific under Amorim and drew inevitable links as a result.

'I'm relaxed' – Amorim backs new signing

Amorim said on Sesko's adaptation period: "I'm relaxed, he's not relaxed. I understand how things are in football and he's going to struggle. That is normal. He has no experience here.

"Ben is a young kid, a control freak. He wants to control everything – and he's not going to control everything. He has more potential than I was thinking [but] we need to understand how he likes to play and also to put in our ideas.

"I'm quite relaxed with that. He is going to be our striker for the long term but he's going to have these struggles and these bumps during the ride. That is a normal thing in football."

GettySesko set for period on the sidelines

Sesko could be out for three weeks following a knee injury sustained against Tottenham Hotspur prior to the international break. He will hope to regain his goalscoring boots on his return, which could come after Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo have departed for the Africa Cup of Nations.

United face Everton on Monday at Old Trafford, knowing that victory could see them regain their place in the top six of the Premier League. There will be a tribute to the late Mani of the Stone Roses prior to kick-off, after the massive Red Devils fan passed away aged 63 on Thursday.

The tribute will create a powerful atmosphere prior to kick-off in a match which could continue United’s strong recent run of form, amidst a five-match unbeaten streak which has seen Amorim win the Premier League’s Manager of the Month for October.

'This is a tough question' – Sandro Tonali offers surprise update on Newcastle future amid talk of Serie A return

Sandro Tonali has sparked uncertainty over his long-term future at Newcastle United after admitting he is taking things “year by year” amid ongoing rumours of a potential return to Serie A. The Italian midfielder, who recently signed a secret contract extension until 2029, insists he is “happy” on Tyneside but refused to rule out the possibility of one day leaving the club.

  • Tonali admits uncertainty over long-term future at Newcastle

Tonali has offered a candid update on his Newcastle United future, admitting he cannot guarantee he will stay at St James’ Park long-term. Speaking after the Magpies’ 2-0 Champions League win over Athletic Club, the Italy international said he is taking his career “year by year” rather than making any long-term promises. His response followed reports of interest from Serie A sides Juventus and AC Milan, both said to be monitoring his situation closely.

Tonali’s comments come despite Newcastle’s firm stance that the midfielder remains a central figure in their long-term project under Howe. The 25-year-old, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan in a £55 million deal in 2023, signed an extended contract while serving his 10-month betting ban, tying him to the club until 2028 with an option for an additional year. Club insiders maintain that Tonali has repeatedly expressed gratitude to Newcastle for their support during that difficult period, and that he remains fully committed to their ambitions.

However, his nuanced response highlights the growing challenge for Newcastle to keep pace with the ambitions of their biggest stars. After losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool in a £125 million deal last summer, Tonali’s uncertainty serves as a reminder that even their most loyal players may consider other opportunities if the club’s progress stalls. The Magpies’ push for consistent European football — and their ability to compete for trophies — could prove decisive in determining whether Tonali stays for the long haul.

Tonali opens up on future — reveals secret renewal

Tonali was asked directly whether he saw his long-term future at Newcastle. His answer, though measured, left little room for interpretation. “This is a tough question because, you know, [in] football you need to think year for year,” he told The i Paper. “I don’t want to say I want to stay here 10 years and in two years, three years, four years [or] five years I will go.”

He continued: “I want to think, just for me, year for year. This is football. The last summer was tough for us, for Alex [Isak], but this is football. If you have an option for your life, for another team you need to think about everything.” Tonali added that, for now, he remains content on Tyneside: “I don’t want to say ‘Yes, I want to stay here 10 years,’ but now I’m happy here. I don’t think anything about another team.”

The Italian also addressed his “secret” contract renewal, clarifying that the extension had been agreed during his betting suspension in 2023. “This extension was three years ago after the ban, I don’t know why the last week everybody spoke about it,” he explained. “The club spoke to me, spoke with my agent, and [we] signed for one more year. It was because I have confidence in this team, and this team have confidence in me. So we worked together.”

  • Tonali's constant links with Serie A return

After becoming the most expensive Italian footballer in history with his £60 million move from AC Milan, Tonali's first season was derailed by a 10-month suspension for breaching betting regulations. Newcastle stood by him throughout, paying his wages and ensuring he stayed integrated within the club’s setup, which deepened his appreciation for the Magpies.

Since returning to action in August 2024, Tonali has quickly reestablished himself as a cornerstone of Howe’s midfield. He was instrumental in helping the Magpies lift the Carabao Cup last season and has featured prominently in their Champions League campaign this term.

Nevertheless, Tonali’s ties to Italy — and his affection for AC Milan — remain strong. Speaking to Vivo Azzurro last month, he acknowledged that a return to Serie A “can never be ruled out,” describing Italy as “my country” and a place where “the league is getting better and better.”

Tonali still has a Newcastle contract till 2028

Tonali’s remarks have placed Newcastle’s sporting hierarchy on alert. New sporting director Ross Wilson is currently overseeing a review of player contracts, and Tonali’s status is likely to be a top priority. While his existing deal offers protection until 2028, the midfielder’s stature within the team could prompt discussions about improved terms.

For Eddie Howe, keeping Tonali happy may hinge more on ambition than money. The Italian’s comments suggest that continued progression — particularly qualification for the Champions League knockout stages — will be key to convincing him that his future remains in England.

Hurt can turn to hope for West Indies after defying the odds

Deandra Dottin was among those battling injury but she was almost able to turn the game West Indies’ way

Shashank Kishore19-Oct-2024

Hayley Matthews tries to hide her emotions after the loss•ICC/Getty Images

Hayley Matthews’ face sank into her cap as tears ran down her cheeks. Stafanie Taylor had her eyes closed to prevent tears from gushing down. Deandra Dottin was aimlessly staring into the distance. Afy Fletcher was looking skywards and young Zaida James trying to console her. Chinelle Henry had her right eye covered with soft cotton and ice to reduce swelling. The common thread running through all of this: pain and raw emotions; the hurt of having stumbled with victory within their grasp was all too evident.West Indies came into this T20 World Cup as rank underdogs and remained that way until they bowed out. But in between, they displayed exemplary skill, the ability to adapt and play a flavor unique to them – one that Matthews had spoken of, time and again during the campaign. Of trying to “have fun” and “dance like the world ain’t watching.”Related

It’s this attitude that heralded fearlessness and a turnaround from a 10-wicket hammering from South Africa in their opening game. It’s this enterprise and naked aggression, especially on the batting front, which sent England packing in a shootout. But by the time they got to the semi-final, it seemed as if the threshold of physical pain that they had to endure, which the fun element had largely help mask, left them running on fumes.Matthews was nursing a sore thumb after coping a hard knock at training. Zaida had just about recovered from a blow on the jaw and a bruising on her hand. Taylor had her right knee heavily taped, huffing and puffing her way between deliveries. Even a limp seemed to elicit excruciating pain but bailing out of it wasn’t an option. Her inability to run left the batters looking for the big shots that they couldn’t execute as often as they would’ve liked. This was evident never more prominently than it was between overs four to eight of their chase which brought West Indies just 11 runs. Singles had become non-existent because of Taylor’s injury, leaving her to rely on boundaries that led them both to take more risks.”She was battling soreness and pain, and she was just battling to get through it all the time,” head coach Shane Deitz said of Taylor. “It was amazing that she was able to come up today. She looked probably better than she did for the last few weeks. She really was mind over body. She gave everything and obviously couldn’t get so over the line. But she put everything in for the team, which we all respect and thank her for that.”Another player who was battling her way through the tournament was Dottin. The entire women’s cricket fraternity waited as she announced a much-awaited comeback after walking away from cricket “dishearten by the system”. Here she was, clutching her sides as she bowled, which Deitz later revealed was due to a side strain that she had been nursing all along.Deandra Dottin was so nearly the match winner for West Indies•Getty ImagesIt didn’t stop her from putting her hand up to bowl when asked to in a crunch game. Dottin’s four wickets were among the primary reasons why West Indies found themselves chasing only 129. Her lack of pace and cutters, while not fully a 100% bowling fit, told you of her determination to contribute. It was the kind of superhuman performance that can uplift a dressing room.Yet an hour later, it was Dottin who had to muscle the big sixes to get West Indies back into the chase with their asking rate creeping up. Dottin was on 7 off 10, showing no inkling of rhythm to her batting. Until she decided to hit her way out of trouble with a slog sweep shelled by Rosemary Mair at deep square leg. An over later, Dottin was once again let off the hook by Eden Carson off another slog. West Indies needed 64 off 36.You knew then Dottin stood in the way of New Zealand and a World Cup final. As if her bowling performance wasn’t enough, the ‘world boss’ still needed to deliver a blockbuster with the bat to give West Indies a chance. Despite those early struggles, Dottin had steely belief that she can hit the ball anywhere for six. It probably made her look at her dangerous best. When she muscled Lea Tahuhu for a 79-metre hit over the longest boundary to start the 16th, an over that went for three sixes, you wondered if the momentum had swung the West Indies way.Dottin had injected belief. It was as if a cheat code had been activated with a prompt to hit the ball far and long. But the physical toll it had taken on her had been so immense that when she was out to a top-edged a slog, it was as if she had only held up until then on adrenaline and nothing else. The shush in the West Indies camp was one of dejection. They needed 33 off 21, but it almost seemed as if the numbers were immaterial at that very moment. They eventually fell eight short – a margin they would’ve so easily covered up with two boundaries on another day. But this was knockout pressure, and a bandaged team willing themselves to fight as much as their bodies allowed them. And on Friday, it wasn’t enough. The long flight home will be tough. But they can be massively proud at what they achieved in UAE, despite all their systemic shortcomings that merely a Women’s CPL can’t help tide over. But in having fun and playing with flair and flamboyance, West Indies sparked conversations of a revival. Now to build on it and show there’s more to them than just the Matthews, Dottins and Taylors.

Bangladesh’s spinners outbowled West Indies’ on the dark, cracked pitches in Dhaka

In comparison, the West Indies spinners took 18 wickets at an average of 30.05 and economy rate of 4.39. Akeal Hosein's Dhaka adventure

Khary Pierre and Akeal Hosein, both coming back to the ODI set-up after long gaps, fared better too. Hosein’s four-wicket haul in the third ODI was West Indies’ only bowling highlight in the series.”[The positive in the ODI series was] probably the batting of Shai Hope – how he continues to put the team on his back every time he faces a challenge,” Sammy said. “He is a leader. He puts the team on his back, but I am really disappointed in the way we bowled. You come to Bangladesh and you know spinners should be licking their lips. That’s the area where you will get to execute your plans and in the most favorable conditions for you. What we displayed over the last three games was very poor, not consistent enough.”Though the conditions were stacked in favour of the spinners, Sammy was all for home advantage.”I will tell you this, I always want to ask for home advantage,” Sammy said. “I can’t tell the Bangladesh team or the authorities what wicket to prepare. I focus on my team having the skillset to counteract whatever comes when they are playing away.”This series was very important for both teams. You are supposed to do what you have to do to win at home. That’s the most important thing. Whether that affects your development going outside of Bangladesh, that’s on them. I just thought my players just didn’t play well throughout the series.”Daren Sammy inspects the Dhaka pitch•AFP/Getty Images

He was also concerned by West Indies’ fielding. “We were poor in all three disciplines,” Sammy said. “I think we dropped six catches. Two didn’t go to hand and one was too wide. We were poor in all the departments today.”Sammy, though, was pleased with Hosein’s return. Back in the ODI team after two years, as a replacement player, Hosein picked up six wickets in two games at an average of 13.66 and economy rate of 4.10.”Massive kudos to Akeal in the manner in which he came up,” Sammy said. “In a team where you have three left-arm spinners and a guy who’s been out for the last two years coming in and outshine them, yes there’s a place for competition.”That’s what you want in a team. You don’t want to select guys because they have nobody else to replace them. You want to select guys because they have competition, and what Akeal did in this series is definitely going to challenge some of the guys who’ve been there.”
