'Still good enough to play all three formats' – Vihari after signing with Tripura for 2025-26 season

India batter Hanuma Vihari has signed with Tripura as one of their three professionals ahead of the 2025-26 domestic season. Vihari, who finished as Player of the Tournament at the recently concluded Andhra Premier League, has been granted a no-objection certificate (NOC) by the Andhra Cricket Association (ACA).ESPNcricinfo understands Vihari’s contract is for a season to begin with, and is extendable by mutual consent. It’s a decision, he says, that stemmed from a desire to play all formats, something Andhra couldn’t promise him.”I was keen on other opportunities since I believe I’m good enough to play all three formats,” Vihari told ESPNcricinfo. “Andhra made it clear they were looking at youngsters for the T20 format. That was why I decided it didn’t make sense playing even the 50-over format, so I sat out of the Vijay Hazare Trophy as well. I also wanted to play in a new environment.”Related

Vihari’s signing marks closure to a slightly tumultuous past few years with Andhra. A full-blown public spat after their 2023-24 Ranji campaign had left him “humiliated and embarrassed” at the treatment meted out to him by certain factions within the ACA. At the time, Vihari alleged “political interference” as one of the reasons for him stepping down as captain at the start of that season.Ahead of the 2024-25 season, Vihari was in talks to move to Madhya Pradesh (for a second year in a row) but was talked out of it by Nara Lokesh, general secretary of Andhra’s ruling party, TDP. Vihari’s u-turn had left the MPCA upset.”For the last two seasons, I’d been talking of going out [he’d been in talks with Madhya Pradesh], but I stayed back,” Vihari said of the previous season. “I felt given the circumstances around me, and also where my own cricket is at, this was the best time to sign with an upcoming team. This year they approached me first, and I felt it’ll be a challenge worth taking up.”

Vihari hasn’t been guaranteed leadership just yet, but he’s likely to be a key member of the leadership group. “As a senior player, I’ll contribute whatever the team expects of me, from a leadership standpoint whether I’m captain or not,” he said. “They’ve got some decent players. I wanted to play in a team where I can build [the squad], and be part of a setup that is hungry to challenge the bigger teams.”It’s been three years since Vihari played a Test, but he believes he’s still got the hunger to score runs “by the truckloads” without wanting to think of the prospect of a comeback. In the time away, he pivoted to regional commentary and coaching [he was part of Madurai Panthers in TNPL 2024]. As he moves states in search of new direction, Vihari wants to keep things simple and not think of a comeback just yet, like Karun Nair achieved after barging the door down in domestic cricket.”My challenge is to take the team through. After 14-15 years of first-class cricket, I’ve certainly got that experience that I want to pass on. But I’m not thinking of a comeback just yet. It’s too far away. I want to score runs, important runs and then take the team through. More than anything, I just want to enjoy my cricket and score lots of runs.”

Bangladesh sink after 7 for 5 collapse and Asalanka century

In a matter of 15 minutes, Bangladesh’s batting unfurled in an ugly collapse, one of the worst in ODI history, handing Sri Lanka a 77-run win in the first ODI. Bangladesh slipped from 100 for 1 to 105 for 8 in the space of 20 deliveries. Those were the fewest runs added from the fall of the second wicket to the eighth.Wanindu Hasaranga and Kamindu Mendis engineered the collapse. They are essentially three bowlers in two as Kamindu bowls both left-arm orthodox and right-arm offbreak. There were no real demons in the Khettarama pitch, though there was one in the outfield. Hasaranga and Kamindu took three wickets each, but credit should also go to Sri Lanka’s fielding. Milan Rathnayake’s superb throw and Janith Liyanage’s diving catch sparked Bangladesh’s collapse.Sri Lanka had earlier made 244 in 49.2 overs, courtesy of their captain Charith Asalanka anchoring the innings. The left-hander struck his fifth ODI century, second as the Sri Lanka captain. Bangladesh had their moments too, with Taskin Ahmed, returning after an ankle injury, taking four wickets.Tanzid Hasan and Najmul Hossain Shanto got Bangladesh to a fine start, adding 71 runs for the second wicket. Both were batting fluently, until, disaster struck.Shanto’s dive couldn’t beat debutant Rathnayake’s throw from deep square leg, in the 17th over. He made 23, but with Tanzid unbeaten on 61 at the other end, Bangladesh would have still thought they were on top.Asalanka introduced Hasaranga in the 18th over, partly because finally a right-hander had arrived at the crease. Litton Das fell lbw for a duck to the legspinner’s second ball. Litton has now failed to reach double-figures in his last eight ODIs, stretching back to December 2023. It was his fourth duck too, in these eight innings.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Two balls later, the set batter Tanzid played a poor shot against Hasaranga, hanging back to blast him to mid-off. Liyanage took a brilliant catch, diving high to his right. Tanzid made 62 off 61 balls, with nine fours and a six.Kamindu then bowled the best delivery of this collapse, getting his left-arm spin to zip through Towhid Hridoy’s defensive push. New captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz was next to go, trapped lbw by Hasaranga’s googly, falling for a duck in the next over.Kamindu then took a brace in the 21st over. First he removed Tanzim Hasan, when Maheesh Theekshana caught him at short midwicket nicely. Kamindu switched to right-arm offbreaks, and had Taskin Ahmed trapped lbw, to make it 105 for 8.Theekshana then got Tanvir caught behind before Jaker Ali’s 51, with four sixes and as many fours, reduced Bangladesh’s margin of defeat to less than 100 runs.Earlier, Asalanka held the Sri Lanka innings together after he decided to bat first. The left-hander struck six fours and four sixes in his 106 off 123 balls, but had little support at the other end. He crossed 1,000 runs at the R Premadasa Stadium where he stands level with Sanath Jayasuriya, Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar after scoring his fourth century at the venue.Asalanka’s knock was critical to Sri Lanka getting out of trouble after they slipped to 29 for 3 in the seventh over. Tanzim removed Pathum Nissanka for a duck, before Taskin got Nishan Madushka to drag his away-going delivery to his stumps.Wanindu Hasaranga wheels away in celebration•Associated Press

Taskin then had Kamindu caught at mid-off, also for a duck, as Bangladesh felt they were on top. They controlled the scoring rate during the 60-run fourth wicket stand between Kusal Mendis and Asalanka. Debutant Tanvir had Mendis lbw for 45, leaving Asalanka with a lot of recovery still left to do.He added 64 runs for the fifth wicket with Liyanage, who eventually struck one down long-off’s throat after making 29 off 40 balls and followed it with a 39-run stand for the sixth wicket with Rathnayake.Asalanka forged on, hitting some nice shots but mostly batting as the innings anchor. He added 34 with Hasaranga, and while there wasn’t much pace to the partnerships, it held Sri Lanka in place.Taskin removed Hasaranga and Theekshana in the same over before Asalanka reached his century in the 48th over. Looking at the final scorecard, Sri Lanka would be grateful that their captain never gave up despite the wickets falling regularly at the other end.

Chelsea and Maresca agree "priority" signing as club work on centre-back deal

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca wanted a centre-back in the summer transfer window, but the west Londoners could be set to finally grant his wish in January.

Chelsea's defensive struggles laid bare after 3-1 defeat to Brighton

Blues legend José Mourinho returns to Stamford Bridge tonight as Chelsea take on Benfica in the Champions League, and the ‘special one’ will be well aware of just how fragile his former club look defensively right now.

Trevoh Chalobah was sent off for denying a goal-scoring opportunity in Chelsea’s last outing, a humbling 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton, where Fabian Hurzeler’s side made the extra man count and ran out deserved winners in the English capital.

Levi Colwill’s ACL injury, which is expected to keep him out for most of 2025/2026, has undoubtedly contributed to Chelsea’s weakness at the back, and Maresca is left with precious few options right now with Tosin Adarabioyo and Wesley Fofana also injured.

Chelsea are winless in the Premier League since this time last month and have conceded 11 goals in their last five outings across all competitions, with BlueCo arguably paying the price for not signing a centre-back in the summer.

Despite being one of the division’s biggest spenders, Chelsea’s priority at the time was to bring in new attackers, with no room left to bolster Maresca’s backline.

Chelsea did try to sign Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth, before the Spaniard’s £50 million move to Real Madrid, and Maresca strongly suggested towards the end of the transfer window that they needed another body in that area.

Since then, reports have claimed that Chelsea could dip back into the market for a new defender mid-season, with journalist Pete O’Rourke sharing an update on this.

Chelsea and Maresca agree on "priority" signing as club work to sign centre-back

According to the reporter, in a piece for Football Insider, Chelsea and Maresca are in alignment about signing a centre-back.

Both the club and manager feel that bringing one is now a “priority” for January, with Chelsea believed to be working on defensive reinforcements for when the window reopens.

It is imperative that Chelsea back Maresca and provide the Italian with another world-class option. Tosin and Fofana’s injuries have added to his woes, as Chelsea brace to take on table-topping Liverpool this weekend with a very weakened backline.

Benoit Badiashile’s return to the fold couldn’t have come at a better time, but Chalobah will be suspended for their Stamford Bridge clash against Arne Slot’s side.

Luckily for Chelsea, the Cobham academy graduate will only serve a one-match domestic ban before returning after the international break against Nottingham Forest.

In the meantime, Chelsea’s recruitment team must get to work on finding the right profile for January, with Club Brugge starlet Joel Ordonez among BlueCo’s potential targets alongside Benfica’s Antonio Silva (Simon Phillips).

How West Ham players really feel about Potter as "information" leaked from Rush Green

West Ham boss Graham Potter could have just this weekend’s game against Everton and their trip to Arsenal to save his job, according to reliable reports, following the Englishman’s uninspired spell in the London Stadium dugout thus far.

When Graham Potter could be sacked by West Ham

As per club insider ExWHUemployee, David Sullivan, Karren Brady and the Hammers board could decide to delay Potter’s dismissal until after their clash with Arsenal at the Emirates.

Despite the humongous pressure on Potter right now, great uncertainty surrounding his position and West Ham weighing up new managers behind-the-scenes, Ex suggests that Sullivan may hand the Englishman his P45 in and around the October international break.

This would give any new manager the chance to make a good start at home to Brentford on October 20 — not to mention a good few weeks to settle in and meet some of his new players.

The 50-year-old could even buy himself more time with a convincing performance against David Moyes’ Toffees at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, but it would have to be a tremendous West Ham display to convince large sections of supporters that he’s still the right man to take them forward.

So far, the east Londoners have conceded more goals than any other side in the Premier League, with seven of their 13 concessions coming directly from corners.

Since Potter’s appointment in January, West Ham also have the worst overall Premier League record out of every single current side in the division, barring last year’s relegated trio.

Matters are desperate for the ex-Chelsea boss, and Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol has now shared how the squad feel about their under-fire tactician.

How West Ham players really feel about Graham Potter

Speaking on a Sky broadcast, via West Ham Zone, Solhekol claims that, despite their poor start to the season, Potter retains the backing of most West Ham players.

West Ham United managerGrahamPotterbefore the match

He also reports that the mood around Rush Green is somehow “very positive”, with the squad “united” in getting back to winning ways.

Even if this is the case among Potter’s squad, it is exactly the opposite when it comes to West Ham’s fanbase, who are growing increasingly impatient.

West Ham face fan protests at every Saturday home game this season

As per The Telegraph, the divisive board face protests from supporters at every single Saturday home game this season, with the ‘broken promises’ made after West Ham’s move to the London Stadium viewed as key to their discontent.

West Ham’s Fan Advisory Board sent a letter of no confidence to the ownership recently, having failed to build upon Moyes’ historic Europa Conference League victory in 2023, which ended their 43-year wait for a major trophy.

That night in Prague also marked the club’s first European piece of silverware since 1965, but it’s only been downhill ever since then.

Potter is now the latest coach after Julen Lopetegui to bear the brunt of West Ham’s arguable mismanagement, and it is hard to see how any new manager can restore the positivity from Moyes’ era in charge any time soon.

Newcastle make enquiry over move to sign "complete" £60m+ forward for Howe

In the latest twist to the tale in Newcastle United’s search for a striker, the Magpies have now launched an enquiry to sign a striker who’s valued at over £60m.

Latest Newcastle striker targets

It’s been a long summer for those at St James’ Park, but one that they’ll be desperate to end on a positive note. Their search for a striker is still ongoing despite endless rejection and new names are now beginning to emerge on their radar. This reportedly includes both Jorgen Strand Larsen and Alexander Sorloth.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers forward is a name that has particularly threatened to steal the headlines amid reports that Newcastle are pushing to secure his signature. Wolves, however, have so far taken the same stance that Brentford have for Yoane Wissa and price their star striker at around the £60m-mark this month.

As a result, Sorloth has also reportedly emerged as an option for Newcastle and Eddie Howe. The Norway international is reportedly keen to leave Atletico Madrid after falling out with Diego Simeone, which could allow the Magpies to swoop in and sign a striker who reached the 20-goal mark in La Liga last season.

Sorloth also has some unfinished business in the Premier League after going down as a transfer flop during his time at Crystal Palace. Years on from that Selhurst Park frustration, he has rebuilt himself into a clinical, towering forward capable of solving Newcastle’s problems.

With less than two weeks until the transfer window slams shut, however, it’s not just Sorloth and Strand Larsen that find themselves on Newcastle’s radar. Reports are now suggesting that they’ve made their first move to sign a £60m+ star.

Newcastle launch enquiry to sign Kolo Muani

According to reports in Italy, as relayed by Sport Witness, Newcastle have now launched an enquiry to sign Randal Kolo Muani from Paris Saint-Germain this month. The forward has looked destined to join Juventus since the start of the summer, but with negotiations yet to reach a breakthrough between the Italian club and PSG, Newcastle have reportedly come swooping in to attempt a potential hijack.

Newcastle aren’t just looking at forwards as the transfer window enters the final stretch.

ByAngus Sinclair Aug 24, 2025

Reports are claiming that negotiations have gone back and forth between Juventus and PSG due to a gap in what they both believe Kolo Muani is worth. The Turin club reportedly want to sign the Frenchman on loan with an obligation to buy worth €45m (£39m), whilst PSG are only willing to accept that option at €70m (£61m) this month.

Given how far apart both clubs are in their valuations, Newcastle could quickly put their riches to good use and solve their striker problem whilst doing so.

Although Kolo Muani struggled at PSG, he quickly rediscovered his best form on loan at Juventus last season, scoring eight goals in 16 Serie A games. A player who Kylian Mbappe once dubbed “complete”, there’s still every chance that the Frenchman realises his impressive potential.

Former president of Espanyol embroiled in BRAWL during LaLiga clash against Real Betis

Former Espanyol president Joan Collet was caught up in a physical altercation in the VIP area after the final whistle of the club's clash with Real Betis, capping a frustrating day for the Catalan club both on and off the pitch.

Former Espanyol president Collet was involved in a brawl in the VIP area of the RCDE Stadium following the club's dramatic 2-1 La Liga defeat to Real Betis on Sunday, according to a report from Mundo Deportivo. Images circulating on social media show Collet caught up in a physical altercation that reportedly started after provocative behaviour from visiting supporters.

What happened in the VIP area?

The incident is understood to have taken place just after the final whistle of a tense and ill-tempered match. Sources suggest that several Real Betis fans in the corporate section acted provocatively, leading to a confrontation with Espanyol supporters. Collet, who was president of the club between 2012 and 2016, initially appeared to be trying to calm the situation before becoming embroiled in the scuffle himself and was reportedly hurt in the process. The former president has since declined to comment on the events.

  • On-pitch tension boils over in dramatic finish

The off-field clash mirrored the high tension on the pitch, which culminated in a dramatic finale. Espanyol were handed a lifeline deep into stoppage time when they were awarded a 97th-minute penalty after a VAR review. However, captain Javi Puado saw his spot-kick saved by Real Betis goalkeeper and former Espanyol player Pau Lopez, condemning the home side to a frustrating defeat. The atmosphere was further charged by provocative gestures from López towards the home fans.

The result sees the Catalan club drop to ninth in the La Liga standings, with 12 points from their opening eight fixtures. They have now lost two of their last three league games.

£100,000-a-week star now considering move to Tottenham alongside Savinho

Tottenham are widely reported to be in talks with Man City over a deal for Brazilian winger Savinho, but Thomas Frank still needs to strengthen other areas of the Spurs squad.

Late Sunday evening, reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano broke the news that Spurs opened club-to-club negotiations with City to sign Savinho – coming soon after they lost club legend Son Heung-min to LAFC.

Son brought an emotional end to his 10-year stay in N17, waving goodbye to the club during an emotional final game against Newcastle in Seoul, with the South Korean since being unveiled to MLS supporters as the division’s most expensive ever arrival.

The 33-year-old was both a standout attacking linchpin on the field and leader behind-the-scenes, but Frank is now forced to cope without Son’s presence ahead of his first full campaign in charge of the north Londoners.

Tottenham quite simply need an out-and-out replacement for the winger, and Savinho fits the bill.

The South American is adept at playing both in Son’s position and on the right-wing, bagging 13 assists in all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side last season over 48 appearances.

Savinho helped to set up two goals across two games against north London rivals Arsenal last season as well, and only Jeremy Doku managed more successful dribbles per 90 out of every City player in the Premier League last season.

The former Girona star’s pace and directness could be a major asset to Frank as the Dane looks to compete on four fronts next term, and despite reports of a rumoued Tottenham bid for Barcelona forward Ferran Torres, it appears Savinho is now their priority wide target.

However, given James Maddison will be out for the majority of 2025/2026 after rupturing his ACL, Spurs are also in need of a natural number 10.

Savinho actually played the role for City on two occasions last campaign – against Salford City in the FA Cup and Al-Hilal at the Club World Cup – but he isn’t exactly an experienced, proven playmaker.

Eberechi Eze forced to consider joining Tottenham as Arsenal deal stalls

According to TEAMtalk, £100,000-per-week Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze remains on Spurs’ radar as a potential option.

Crystal Palace's EberechiEze

There are credible reports that Savinho may not be Tottenham’s only late summer deal (Fabrizio Romano), and their glaring need for a CAM means we surely cannot rule out a deal for Eze.

The 27-year-old has been repeatedly linked with a move to Arsenal for the last month, but the Gunners are hesitating to make a formal bid for him – meaning the door is still open for Tottenham to submit an offer of their own.

Despite his eagerness to join Arsenal, TT claim Eze is ‘forced to consider’ other clubs as Mikel Arteta’s side stall – and Tottenham have apparently gained significant momentum as an alternative.

Daniel Levy is also informed of the conditions of a possible deal for the England international, and the club have shown a growing willingness to explore it in recent days.

Eze managed more shots at goal, key passes and successful takes-ons per match than any other Palace player last season, and he’s arguably perfect to fill the void left by Maddison considering he’d also help to fill Tottenham’s ‘locally trained’ Champions League quota.

The ex-QPR sensation would cost in excess of £60m, according to TT, and given Tottenham were once ready to splash a similar amount on Morgan Gibbs-White, it could be a cost that Spurs are open to paying.

Hansi Flick treats Frenkie de Jong with extreme caution as injured midfielder trains away from Barcelona team-mates

Frenkie De Jong is back in training with no serious injury scare but coach Hansi Flick is taking a cautious approach with the midfielder.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Barcelona’s star midfielder De Jong has returned to the training pitch. The 28-year-old, who suffered a gluteal injury while on international duty with Netherlands, trained outside the group under the close supervision of the club’s fitness coaches. According to , he arrived later than his team-mates for a light, partial session, a move that confirms his injury is not a long-term one. However, it also shows the club’s newfound philosophy of extreme caution, prioritising a full recovery over a rushed return.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The absence of players like Gavi and Alejandro Balde have created a midfield selection crisis, forcing Flick to rely on others like Marc Casado and Pedri. This situation has been a major blow to Flick's plans, which rely on a physically robust squad to execute his trademark high-pressing and quick-transitioning tactics. The club's medical team are also working to get youth player Marc Bernal back on the pitch, but his return is also being treated with immense caution, given that it has been 365 days since he underwent surgery.

  • TELL ME MORE

De Jong’s return to training is a welcome sign, but he has been ruled out of the upcoming La Liga match against Valencia. The club’s main goal are to ensure he is in peak condition for the upcoming Champions League match against Newcastle. Meanwhile, the situation with Gavi is far more complex. The discomfort in his right knee – the same one that underwent ACL surgery – has persisted, and while the club are still pursuing a conservative approach with physical therapy, the possibility of a minor arthroscopic procedure is now being considered more seriously to alleviate the pain.

    WHAT NEXT FOR FLICK?

With a midfield depth crisis, Flick will have to rely on a mix of senior players and promising youth talents to navigate the upcoming matches. The highly anticipated return of De Jong, along with the lingering fitness issues of Gavi and Balde, means that the club’s medical team will continue to play a crucial role in deciding which players can and cannot take the field.
