Why Sarina Wiegman has added new blood to her England squad ahead of Australia clash as defender earns late first senior Lionesses call-up – explained

England boss Sarina Wiegman has added yet another fresh face to her Lionesses squad ahead of Tuesday's clash with Australia after West Ham defender Anouk Denton accepted her first senior call-up. That's despite no player withdrawing from selection before the European champions' second fixture of this international break, with it instead a measure to protect Lucy Bronze and Niamh Charles in particular.

  • Official: Anouk Denton earns first Lionesses call-up

Wiegman announced the news of Denton's arrival on camp in her press conference on Monday. The 22-year-old had initially been included in the Under-23s squad, which was beaten 5-0 by Germany on Thursday and will be out to bounce back when hosting Portugal on Monday evening. However, she has now moved across to the senior team for the first time, bumping the Lionesses' squad back up to 25 players, the number it stood at when it was announced before a flurry of withdrawals unfortunately followed.

Why England have called up West Ham star

Explaining the decision to call in Denton, Wiegman told reporters: "After the match on Saturday, we had some niggles. Things are going well, so everyone will be on the [training] pitch, but we are still also recovering and in the preparing stage for tomorrow. So, if things go well, then we have to make a decision for the [matchday squad]."

Asked if there are any players in particular that England are monitoring when it comes to those niggles, Wiegman was keen to play down any great concerns. "They're not big things to share, because when you're football players, there's small things," she responded. "I just didn't want to take any risk. We are still building some players too, which you've seen with Lucy Bronze and Niamh Charles."

After playing with a fractured tibia throughout Euro 2025, Bronze only returned to action at club level earlier this month and is yet to start a game since that tournament ended. Chelsea team-mate Charles, meanwhile, suffered an ankle injury at the end of September and has only played once since, racking up 56 minutes in the Blues' win over Tottenham on October 12.

  • Who is Denton? Introducing the latest Lionesses call-up

Denton's inclusion makes sense given the name-checking of Bronze and Charles, as the West Ham defender can play both as a right-back and a left-back. Wiegman will be well aware of what the 22-year-old can bring to the table, too, given how well, and how often, she communicates with the youth national team staff.

Denton, an Arsenal academy product, has been capped all the way through the England youth teams, most notably representing the U19s at the Euros back in 2022. She spent some time in the United States, at the University of Louisville, and joined West Ham upon the ending of that chapter, having spent a short period on loan with the Hammers while still at Arsenal.

It's not been an easy season so far at club level for Denton, with West Ham losing all six of their Women's Super League fixtures to date. But the defender has been one of their better performers and is very highly rated by head coach Rehanne Skinner and her staff, so much so that she signed a new deal just this year which runs until the summer of 2028.

England's full-back areas better-stocked ahead of Australia clash

Denton arrives to bolster Wiegman's options in the full-back areas, then, which have never been plentiful. Maya Le Tissier, who plays at centre-back at club level, played at right-back on Saturday, with Bronze taking the baton from her just past the hour. There was a centre-back at left-back, too, as Alex Greenwood played the full 90 minutes in a position she started her career in but has played sparingly since.

Charles could play in the latter role against Australia on Tuesday, having not featured at all on Saturday, and there is another option in Taylor Hinds, the Arsenal left-back who won her first senior England call-up this month. Denton is now added to that list as she looks to become the latest in a long line of Lionesses to progress through what is a very productive England pathway.

Is Kylian Mbappe back? Xabi Alonso provides key fitness update on superstar striker after injury on France duty

Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso provided a key update on Kylian Mbappe's fitness ahead of the club's La Liga fixture against Getafe this weekend. The star forward picked up an injury while on international duty with France. He limped off the pitch late on during Les Bleus' clash with Azerbaijan and missed their World Cup qualifier against Iceland after being released from the French squad.

Mbappe suffered ankle knock against Azerbaijan

Mbappe's participation in their first World Cup qualifier of the October international break was hanging in the balance due to an ankle injury he sustained while playing for Madrid against Villarreal in La Liga. Despite the knock, the France captain took to the the field against Azerbaijan last Friday but he suffered another ankle knock and had to be subbed off in the 83rd minute.

The attacker was subsequently released from the France squad so that he could work on his recovery back at Madrid's facilities. A statement from the French Football Federation read: "Upon the French delegation's return to Clairefontaine, the French team captain spoke with Didier Deschamps. The national coach has confirmed his absence. Kylian Mbappe has been released to his club and will not be replaced."

Advertisement(C)Getty ImagesAlonso provides key update on Mbappe

Ahead of Los Blancos' upcoming La Liga match against Getafe on Sunday, manager Alonso provided a key update on Mbappe's condition. Speaking to reporters at the pre-match press conference, the Spanish coach said: "Yes, Kylian Mbappe is back and can also start against Getafe."

Mbappe's recovery comes as welcome news for the Spanish giants, who will aim to occupy the top spot in the league ahead of their Clasico fixture against arch-rival Barcelona next week. The French star is currently enjoying a remarkable scoring run, having scored in his last 10 consecutive matches for both club and country. His recent scoring streak includes goals against Ukraine, Real Sociedad, Kairat, and Espanyol, with the 26-year-old hitting the net in multiple competitions. He also broke the deadlock in France's 3-0 win against Azerbaijan with his 17th goal in 13 appearances for club and country this season, which also marked his 53rd international goal for France, meaning he is now only four goals away from Olivier Giroud's record as Les Bleus' all-time top scorer.

Mbappe wants to help Alonso win many trophies

Alonso created shockwaves in Europe after his scintillating stint at Bayer Leverkusen, where he helped the German side win the Bundesliga title in the 2023/24 season. Following his brief stint as a manager at Leverkusen, the Spaniard returned to Real Madrid, where he had previously played with distinction. Mbappe, who is in fine form, lavished praise on the manager while claiming the Madrid players want to help Alonso with as many trophies as possible.

Speaking about Ancelotti and Alonso's managerial style, Mbappe had to : "They're different, two generations of coaches who have crossed paths. Ancelotti is one of the best in history. When you arrive, you're happy to play for him; he's always close to the players. Xabi wants to help a lot, but he's younger. He has more need and desire to prove himself with Real Madrid, to achieve things in his first big opportunity at the best club in the world. We're going to try to help him win as many titles as possible. It's an important year for Real Madrid and the national team. We're starting to understand what the manager wants from us, but we have to improve to get where we want to be."

AFPReal Madrid facing hectic fixture list

Alonso will have to rotate his squad as much as possible in the next few matches, as they face a hectic fixture list that involves playing four matches in a span of 13 days, starting this Sunday. The fixture list also includes a key Champions League game against Juventus on October 22 and El Clasico in La Liga four days later. Madrid are currently at the top of the table with 21 points from eight matches.

The Real Madrid boss says he's taking one game at a time: "For me, the next one is always the toughest when I'm going through a block. This one with fewer games because we've had a clean week, but we want to keep making progress, being consistent in all competitions. We're thinking about what's coming next, which is Getafe. We're not looking any further ahead. We're aware of what's coming, obviously, but what we've talked about internally is tomorrow's opponent, which will be very demanding. So far, we've been very consistent and reliable, but we can't let our guard down."

Kerkez will love him: £76m star talking to Alisson about joining Liverpool

We are only one week away from the closure of the transfer window, and Liverpool are primed to do more business after their thrilling summer of spending.

Alexander Isak, anyone? He’s the dream, that’s for sure, but Newcastle United have taken hardball to the next level and are blocking the Sweden striker’s departure, even after he has exhausted almost every effort in getting the move done.

Liverpool need another forward, even after welcoming Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz to the fold, but Arne Slot will, by and large, be delighted with his outfit’s activity after winning the Premier League with such confidence last year.

A deal for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi also remains in the pipeline, but Liverpool could also be set to offload one or two more first-teamers before the end of the month.

Who could still leave Liverpool

Harvey Elliott was anticipated to leave Liverpool as the 2024/25 campaign wound down, but he still remains part of Slot’s first-team squad.

Liverpool player Harvey Elliott

That might change, though, with RB Leipzig and Tottenham Hotspur interested in getting a deal done. Loan approaches are also being considered for young fringe players Kaide Gordon and James McConnell. Lewis Koumas joined Birmingham City on loan earlier this week.

Kostas Tsimikas is also slated for an exit. Liverpool currently have three left-backs, after all. Having signed Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth in a £40m deal back in June, the Greek defender is understandably surplus to requirements, with Andy Robertson willing to fight for his place over the coming year.

AFC Bournemouth's MilosKerkez

Kerkez left plenty to be desired on his first Premier League outing for the Reds, but he walked among giants at the PFA awards earlier this week, part of a Team of the Year that included Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.

However, while the 21-year-old may be a little over-zealous in the challenge, he’s got so much potential, far outstripping Liverpool’s Robertson in the top flight last term.

With Liverpool having already sold Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz at the top of the field, they need a new forward, and if Isak does prove to have a signature beyond FSG’s reach, Liverpool have found an alternative who could help Kerkez in growing into his skin on Merseyside.

Liverpool step up bid for new forward

According to Football Insider, Real Madrid winger Rodrygo has engaged in talks with his Brazilian teammate Alisson as he weighs up his options before the transfer deadline.

Rodrygo, 24, is regarded as one of the best wingers in the world, but he’s fallen out of favour at the Santiago Bernabeu, and Los Blancos would be open to selling for a figure in the region of €90m (equating to £76m).

Real Madrid's Rodrygo

However, Manchester City are also showing a vested interest in the versatile talent, and probably have the lead, given Liverpool’s priority remains with Isak until explicitly informed by Newcastle that he is not leaving.

Why Liverpool want Rodrygo

Up until now, Rodrygo has been considered one of Liverpool’s contemporary nemeses, for he has plied his craft with Real Madrid since his 18th year, and the Spanish giants were so often a thorn in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Real Madrid'sRodrygoarrives at the stadium before the match

Across his six years at Real Madrid, Rodrygo has scored 68 goals and supplied 51 assists, winning two Champions League titles and La Liga three times.

Rodrygo isn’t the strongest forward, nor does he have the prolific output of someone like Salah, or Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe at Real Madrid.

But he’s still an almighty star, endowed with pace and skill and intelligence that could add several dimensions to Slot’s side. Bringing such qualities to the table at Anfield, he could be the dream left winger to combine with Kerkez.

Rodrygo hasn’t always found a home on his preferred left wing at Real Madrid, and though he flattered to deceive at times last year, he scored six goals and supplied six assists across just 12 games as a left winger in 2024/25, compared to a return of 13 goal involvements from 31 matches on the right.

Not only is Rodrygo prolific when his strongest attributes are correctly utilised, but he’s crisp and progressive too, with data-driven platform FBref revealing that he ranks among the top 2% of positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues for pass completion and the top 19% for progressive carries per 90.

Remarked to be “the jewel in the crown” at Madrid by one analyst, the diminutive Brazilian differs from Gakpo, who is more economical on the ball, more focused on serving as a direct goalscoring threat.

Rodrygo’s movement and link-up play, conversely, lend themselves to a wider scope of responsibility, and that could ensure Kerkez hits his stride in a Liverpool shirt this season.

The young Hungarian certainly has the technical aptitude and athleticism to thrive at Liverpool (he’s proved his worth in the Premier League, hasn’t he?), but Liverpool’s bar is high, and you need the full gamut to succeed, bringing everything together.

Kerkez is such an energetic and dynamic force, and has the burners to overlap ahead of Rodrygo and widen Liverpool’s attacking options. This, in turn, enables the Brazilian to arc inwards and strike on goal, as has proven to be so effective when he is deployed on his preferred flank.

Isak can do the one thing for Liverpool that Haaland never did at Man City

Alexander Isak is finally a Liverpool player. That’s the headline. That’s the saga of the summer and that may well be the deal that commences not only more Anfield glory in the current campaign, but for years to come.

The Reds have been accused of not doing enough in the transfer window in the past. They welcomed a new manager in Arne Slot this time last summer and the only immediate arrival proved to be Federico Chiesa as doubts arrived over Richard Hughes’ ability to get the job done. One year on, those doubts are laughable.

The Reds are in a better place than ever to repeat the dominance that Anfield has been unfortunate enough to watch elsewhere in the Premier League era. But, it must be said, they still need to find a way to make sure all their new pieces connect to form another title-winning machine, especially Isak and Hugo Ekitike.

The Haaland mistake that Liverpool must avoid

On paper, it is the ultimate position of luxury to have two of the world’s best strikers at your disposal. Alas, things on the pitch are slightly different.

Unless managers are willing to sacrifice their systems and midfield numbers to have two strikers lead the line together, there’s a high chance that one high-level forward will have to settle for a place on the bench or an unfamiliar role. And all it takes is one look at Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez to realise how that problem ends.

julian-alvarez-manchester-city-tottenham-hotspur-academy-postecoglou-mikey-moore

The Citizens had the world at their feet for four straight years in the Premier League, with Haaland breaking record after record along the way. Left to watch on, however, was the talented Alvarez. In an ideal world, Pep Guardiola would have found a way for them to click together on the pitch, but it just did not come.

The duo combined for just eight goals in 63 games and Alvarez’s compromise ultimately proved to be untenable as he departed to Atletico Madrid, becoming one of Europe’s most impressive players. It should be seen as one of Guardiola’s biggest regrets, given how they’ve struggled without the forward.

Whilst much of last season’s struggles will be put down to Rodri’s injury, and others that followed, there’s no denying that City became over-reliant on Haaland for goals. The Norwegian did his job – scoring 34 goals in all competitions – but this time there was no Alvarez to swoop in when City’s star suffered a rare off day.

Had Guardiola compromised to find a place for Alvarez, things could have been different for Man City last season. Instead, it was Diego Simeone who benefitted from handing the Argentine 30 starts in La Liga.

It’s not a problem that is going away anytime soon for City, either. This time, it’s Omar Marmoush missing out. The Egyptian arrived in January and handed City an instant attacking boost – scoring seven goals in 16 Premier League games – yet has already found himself pushed out to the left-hand side this season and didn’t start at all against Wolves.

Man City have inadvertently handed Liverpool the exact blueprint to avoid if they want to see both Ekitike and Isak thrive. Now, it’s down to Slot to keep both strikers happy.

How Liverpool could line-up with Isak & Ekitike

Will Slot change his system? Will Ekitike be left to settle for a place on the bench? Or will one find themselves out wide? Those are the questions that only Liverpool can truly answer after the international break, but they’ve certainly got options to ensure that both players enjoy the game time that they deserve.

The easiest way here is to start Ekitike out wide. Unlike Alvarez, the Frenchman has featured in that role before arriving in the Premier League and is arguably a similar profile to Liverpool’s current left-winger Cody Gakpo. Both are towering, physical figures who look to cut inside from the left using their skill and strength.

The Gakpo mould is one that Ekitike should follow if he wants to enjoy his best form from that side. The Dutchman started his Liverpool career as a No.9, before Slot arrived and moved him to the left of the front three. Since then, he has thrived.

Nothing has to be permanent, either. Isak’s injury history suggests that having a player like Ekitike available will prove to make all the difference for the Reds. In one move, Slot would be losing a world-class striker and replacing him with someone who has already stolen the headlines in a Liverpool shirt.

So, although Haaland and Alvarez’s failure should act as a firm warning, there is a way for Liverpool to march towards a successful title defence whilst enjoying both of their big-money strikers.

Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney to wield axe? Phil Parkison told when he could ‘lose his job’ as Wrexham sit just above the Championship relegation zone

Phil Parkinson has been told when he could “lose his job” at Wrexham, with there already talk of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney preparing to wield the axe. Speculation regarding a change in the dugout at SToK Racecourse has surfaced following a slow start to the 2025-26 campaign that sees the Red Dragons perched just outside the Championship relegation zone.

  • How many points have Wrexham picked up?

On the back of three successive promotions, with the EFL history books being rewritten, Wrexham have found the going tough in the second tier of English football. They have picked up just four points and one victory through five games this season.

Spending spree: £33m of added pressure

Questions are being asked of whether club legend Parkinson is the right man to guide the ambitious Welsh outfit towards the Premier League, with pressure mounting on the back of an elaborate £33 million ($45m) spending spree in the summer transfer window.

  • Hollywood co-owners have backed boss

There is no suggestion that Hollywood co-owners Reynolds and McElhenney are planning an imminent change in the coaching department, having shown unwavering trust in Parkinson across the last four years, but the 57-year-old tactician knows that he needs to deliver a reversal in fortune on the field.

Warning from former Red Dragons manager

Ex-Wrexham manager Dean Saunders told of the sack rumours: “If they don’t improve soon, Parkinson will lose his job, and that’s the reality of football, especially at such an ambitious club. It’s easy spending the money, it’s getting results after you have spent the money that is the difficult part. The squad needs a little bit more time to be allowed to gel before we can expect better performances and results from them. But you don’t always get time in football.”

VIDEO: England captain Harry Kane holds back the tears in emotional speech to Djed Spence after ex-Tottenham team-mate earned first Three Lions cap to become country's first Muslim player

England captain Harry Kane struggled to hold back the tears in an emotional speech to Djed Spence after his ex-Tottenham team-mate earned a first Three Lions cap to become the country's first openly Muslim player. The crushing 5-0 victory over Serbia in World Cup qualifying on Tuesday night was about far more than the scoreline. For Spence, it was the moment dreams became reality.

Spence came on in the 69th minute, replacing Chelsea’s Reece James, and in doing so, made history as the first Muslim player to represent England at senior level. For Spence, the appearance marked the culmination of years of persistence, setbacks, and unrelenting belief in his talent.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Spence’s path to international recognition has been anything but straightforward. Having started out at Middlesbrough, he secured a move to Tottenham in 2022 with high expectations. But the transition proved far from smooth. His persistence was rewarded last season when he played a key role in Spurs’ Europa League triumph, a turning point that put him back in the spotlight. Fast forward to Belgrade, and the full-back is now a fully-fledged England international, something that once seemed far-fetched.

WHAT KANE & SPENCE SAID

Kane, who played alongside Spence  during those early Spurs years, presented him with his England legacy cap. Struggling to hold back tears, Kane told his team-mates: "We have a new debut today. I asked to do this because I saw this player three, four years ago at Tottenham. He had to go through a lot, he had to keep his head up, he had to work hard, and now he’s an England player. I’m a little emotional because I know how tough it was for you. Credit to you, your family, everyone involved. You deserve this one."

The man of the hour was understandably lost for words. Spence simply said: "I’m grateful to make my debut. Over the moon. It’s been a long journey but I finally made it. It feels great, man, thank you."

Speaking to the media later, Spence added: "I was surprised because I didn't know I was the first [Muslim], so it's a blessing. It's good to make history and hopefully inspire young kids around the world that they can make it as well. They can do what I am doing."

Once worth £40m: West Brom can forget Mikey Moore by signing "sublime" ace

West Bromwich Albion clinched an entertaining 3-2 victory in their final runout before the Championship season kicks off against Spanish visitors Rayo Vallecano.

Not much can often be dissected from these summer runouts, as the main priority will always be to get fitness into the legs, but Ryan Mason will hope his side can follow up this win with one or two more across the daunting opening matches in the league.

The 33-year-old will be equal parts nervous and excited as he embarks on his first proper season as a rookie head coach, with more new signings likely to be in the pipeline before September’s deadline to help Mason navigate these choppy waters.

Unfortunately, he won’t be able to convince Tottenham Hotspur prodigy Mikey Moore to move to the West Midlands, even with the bonus of Mason’s Spurs connections being on their side.

West Brom's failed pursuit of Mikey Moore

It looked nailed on that the 17-year-old attacker was going to be West Brom’s next statement capture, having already impressed the Baggies masses by signing Aune Heggebo for £4.7m from Brann, alongside ex-Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips also catching the eye as a reinforcement defensively.

However, this deal is no longer one that is feasible to get over the line, with Scottish giants Rangers pipping the Baggies to the in-demand teenager’s signature over Mason’s men, amid a battle also once forming for his signature from Birmingham City.

This is a body blow to the second-tier outfit, with Moore no doubt ready to explode into life even more away from his limited senior chances back at Spurs, having previously collected a staggering 17 goals and 12 assists from just 22 U18 Premier League appearances in North London.

Of course, there is the worry that the teenage sensation will falter away from that Spurs bubble, as the Baggies now attempt to forget about any move falling through by looking to snap up this other exciting attacker instead.

Tottenham teenager Mikey Moore

West Brom can forget Moore by signing "sublime" star

Moore is the flavour of the month, but there’s no guarantee he would be an instant success story in the Championship, away from already bagging a senior goal at Spurs during a fleeting Europa League runout.

Instead, the Baggies could be better off going after an attacking star who already knows what it takes to excel at such a demanding level in the form of AFC Bournemouth forward David Brooks – a player who once cost the Cherries £11.5m back in 2018, having later been valued at £40m amid rival Premier League interest.

West Brom had previously been tipped to make a loan move for the former Sheffield United attacker this summer, but no such move came to fruition in the end, even as the deal hung in the balance at the advanced stages.

His eventual arrival onto the scene, if a move were to get back into motion, would allow for West Brom to forget about Moore in an instant, as the Welshman has more than shown his obvious class in the testing division previously.

The 17-year-old Ibrox-bound attacker, on the contrary, has never experienced what the testing terrain of the second tier is like, even if he does look ready for an opportunity in such a division.

Therefore, going after Brooks – especially on a loan basis – feels like a more savvy move on West Brom’s end over ruminating too much over losing out on Moore, particularly when you also consider the 28-year-old can play through the middle and on both wings, much like his young Gers counterpart.

David Brooks

His former Bournemouth boss, Eddie Howe, even labelled Brooks as a “sublime” talent when he was first cutting his teeth on the South Coast, with his standout stint in South Yorkshire in the EFL also leading to his ex-Sheffield United manager, Chris Wilder, describing him as “superb.”

Everything is pointing in the direction of this being a sterling move to pursue to bounce back from the disappointing news about Moore, as Brooks potentially attempts to be the spark yet again for a Championship side in their hunt for promotion glory.

Sunderland racing PSG to sign "immense" £50m+ La Liga star after Reinildo

With Habib Diarra signed and Reinildo also on his way, Sunderland are now reportedly battling against Paris Saint-Germain to secure their third arrival of the summer.

Sunderland set to sign Diarra and Reinildo

Just when Leeds United believed they were in the driving seat, Sunderland came bustling in to steal Diarra from under their noses. Outbidding the 49ers, those at the Stadium of Light are reportedly set to secure the midfielder’s signature for a club-record fee of £30m. But they are not done there – far from it, in fact.

After Diarra, the Black Cats have turned towards La Liga and Atletico Madrid to agree a deal for Reinildo Mandava. The left-back is set to become a free agent at the end of next month, allowing Sunderland to swoop in and secure his signature.

Both incoming arrivals signal Sunderland’s intent. None of the last six promoted teams have survived at the first time of asking in the Premier League, but the playoff winners are spending as though they’re in the mood to finally put an end to that trend.

Diarra particularly stands out between the two. The former Strasbourg midfielder gave English football a glimpse of his talents against the Three Lions earlier this month when he scored Sengal’s second goal in a 3-1 win. Now, 20 days on, he’s set to become a permanent feature in the Premier League.

There’s still plenty of time remaining in the summer transfer window, however, and the Black Cats could yet reportedly turn back towards La Liga for yet another reinforcement.

Sunderland racing to sign Gasiorowski

Having already agreed a deal to sign Reinildo from Atletico Madrid, those in Wearside have seemingly returned to La Liga for another talent. According to reports in Spain, Sunderland are now racing PSG to sign Yarek Gasiorowski from Valencia, who are willing to let their centre-back leave below his huge €60m (£51m) release clause.

Up against PSG and Brighton & Hove Albion, Valencia’s willingness to sell the 20-year-old for around €25m (£21m) rather than demanding his £51m release clause should hand Sunderland a major boost, but would still take their spending upwards of £50m for the summer.

A player with “immense potential” according to scout Jacek Kulig, Gasiorowski would slot straight into Sunderland’s plan to mix players who are on the rise and those who are more established – joining Reinildo and Diarra.

Whether the Black Cats can fend off interest from PSG and Brighton remains to be seen, however, in what would be another impressive signing.
