Rangers media left thrilled by "best deal that’s been done this year"

The international break came at a good time for Rangers, truth be told. The Gers had just lost the first Old Firm derby of the season, as Celtic extended the gap over Michael Beale's side to four points despite playing just four games in the Scottish Premiership so far this season.

That defeat, combined with the thrashing at the hands of PSV Einhoven to end their Champions League dreams, has led to questions over Beale's future, and has put the need for good news high up on the priority list. And that's exactly what some recent contract news has given those at Ibrox.

After a rising star for the future put pen to paper on a new deal at the club, a number of media outlets covering Rangers reacted with delight.

What's the latest Rangers news?

Rangers boss Michael Beale.

Rangers will be hoping that the international break has handed Beale and his side a chance to regroup, before they go again in their return fixture against St Johnstone, who have already taken a point away from Celtic this season.

The Gers will at least be boosted by the recent news that 16-year-old Bailey Rice has signed a new deal until May 2026, despite receiving interest from many clubs, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Reacting to the news, one writer for This is Ibrox took to Twitter to say: "Fantastic to see Bailey Rice sign a longer deal. Has all the attributes to make an impact in a Rangers first team."

Meanwhile, the teenager also received plenty of praise from Four Lads Had A Dream, who responded, saying, "very good news" before the Rangers Rabble Podcast also spoke highly of the news, Tweeting: "Best deal that's been done this year."

With that said, it's clear that Rice is a highly-rated prospect at Rangers, and one that could play a key part in the club's future. The fact that he has been handed so much praise at just 16-years-old suggests that those at Ibrox have a potential gem on their hands.

Who is Bailey Rice?

It's no surprise that Rice is spoken so highly of by those who follow Rangers so closely. The 16-year-old made his senior debut last season, coming from the bench in the Gers' 3-0 victory against Livingston, to become the youngest ever player to play for the club. Making history like that, the midfielder more than deserved a new deal.

Speaking about Rice after handing him his record debut, Beale said, via The Daily Record: "He is only 16 and not often a young boy plays for Scotland in Spain on the Friday afternoon and then comes back to make his debut for Rangers on the Saturday. What a weekend for that young man. It is a pleasing moment for everyone who has worked with him and his family."

Everything is pointing towards a player with the potential to star for Rangers, and, as things stand, Rice has the world at his feet. It will certainly be interesting to see if Beale opts to hand the young midfielder even more opportunities to impress in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Fulham: Whites Open Talks For World Cup Star

Fulham are now attempting a late move for Senegal international defender Ismail Jakobs as a report shares an update on transfer talks.

Who will Fulham sign?

Manager Marco Silva has watched three major signings come through the door so far.

Indeed, defender Calvin Bassey is perhaps the most notable of them, with Fulham putting pen to paper on an £18.2 million move to prise him away from Eredivisie giants Ajax.

Meanwhile, former Wolves duo Raul Jimenez and Adama Traore swapped Molineux for Craven Cottage thereafter, with the Whites attempting to strengthen before September 1.

Their trio of deals, though, isn't satisfactory enough from Silva's perspective – as the Fulham boss explained earlier this month that his side quite simply need to be doing more.

"Unfortunately, we need many still. We have some important players injured,” Silva said.

“I hope they can come sooner. We have just two full backs, we need a midfielder too and we have just two wingers so we need another two wingers.

“We have completed our central defenders. I needed these players 15 days or 20 days ago, not now.”

Marco Silva

Fulham were chasing a deal to sign Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi to shore up that area of the squad, but according to reliable media sources, that move has stalled.

The west Londoners now also need a striker to replace the departed Aleksandar Mitrovic, as Silva's former star striker has made a move to the Saudi Pro League to join up with Al-Hilal – where he will partner Neymar going forward.

To succeed Mitrovic, it is reported that Arsenal striker Folarin Balogun is of serious interest with talks ongoing, but they'll face some stiff competition from Ligue 1 side Monaco.

Back to Jakobs and the full-back area, Fulham are apparently chasing the Senegalese, with a report from TEAMtalk sharing the latest on their pursuit.

Indeed, the outlet claims they're in ongoing talks to sign the African who featured at last year's 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and he is now a "top target" for Silva personally.

This comes as the full-back area is seen as a transfer "priority", with Leicester City star Timothy Castagne also on Fulham's radar heading into the September 1 deadline.

It's added that the Craven Cottage side are "determined" to win the race for Jakobs in particular, though, with with league rivals Nottingham Forest also in the hunt for his signature.

How good is Ismail Jakobs?

Senegal defender Ismail Jakobs.

The 24-year-old has impressed at Monaco since his transfer from Cologne in 2021, making 41 appearances in all competitions last season.

Jakobs can contribute going forward, too, having registered eight assists in total throughout his total cameos in a Monaco shirt.

The left-back also managed four goals and four assists in 47 appearances whilst he was at Cologne (Transfermarkt), but his discipline behind-the-scenes has been flagged as an issue recently.

"Jakobs was fined for something that will remain internal," said former Monaco manager Phillipe Clement last season.

"It’s clear that it wasn’t good. He understood that. It’s done, but he won’t be part of the squad [against Toulouse]."

Everton Readying Offer To Sign 26-Year-Old Forward

Everton are interested in signing Salernitana forward Boulaye Dia during the summer transfer window and are reportedly ready to make a player-plus-cash offer.

Who is Everton target Boulaye Dia?

The Senegalese attacker moved to Salernitana this time last year, initially arriving on a season-long loan deal, before completing a permanent move from Villarreal in the process once the campaign reached its conclusion.

Dia has made an instant impression at his current club, scoring 16 Serie A goals in just 27 starts in the competition last season, with a further six appearances coming from the substitutes' bench.

At international level, the 26-year-old is also an established player now, scoring six goals in 25 caps to date, and he started four matches for his country at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, scoring once in the competition.

Dia has emerged as a potential transfer target for Everton this summer, as the Blues look to rebuild what has been a problematic area of the pitch of late. It looks as though transfer target El Bilal Toure could be on his way to Atalanta instead of Goodison Park, acting as a blow, but it could be that the Salernitana man is viewed as an alternative option.

His current deal doesn't expire until the summer of 2026, but it may be that Everton are able to snap him up before the start of the new Premier League season, following a new update.

Could Everton sign Boulaye Dia?

According to La Citta di Salerno [via Sport Witness], the Blues are pushing to sign Dia this summer, even though Salernitana would "gladly keep" hold of him beyond the current transfer window.

Everton are ready to table a €25m (£21.5m) offer for the Senegal international, and as has been reported separately, the deal could see Neal Maupay head the other way, after a hugely disappointing spell in a Blues shirt. The Frenchman has been a transfer "goal" for the Italian outfit, despite failing to impress on Merseyside, and it is believed that this could help "unlock" a deal for Dia.

Having potentially missed out on Toure, Dia looks like a great option instead, having shone so much for Salernitana in a short space of time, showing that he can excel in one of Europe's top five leagues, with only Napoli's Victor Osimhen and Inter Milan's Lautaro Martinez scoring more than him in Serie A last season.

Described as "incredible" by journalist Josh Bunting in the past, the attacker has scored 68 goals in his senior career, not to mention chipping in with 16 assists, and this level of firepower is something that is badly needed at Everton, considering Dwight McNeil topped the Blues' Premier League scoring charts in 2022/23 with only seven strikes.

At 26, Dia already has a healthy amount of experience under his belt, and hasn't looked remotely daunted in a tough league, so there is no reason why he couldn't come straight in as the man to lead the line at Goodison Park, although his ability to play out wide and in attacking midfield is another added bonus.

West Ham Could Unluck Paqueta By Signing £40m Sensation

West Ham United are reportedly interested in Ajax star Edson Alvarez, as David Moyes exercises his options to replace Declan Rice.

The Hammers gained £105m from the sale of the Englishman, leaving them with a hefty cash exchange and a void to fill in the middle of the park.

A host of talent has been speculated to be on the list of the east Londoners, with star names rumoured to be targeted.

Could West Ham sign Edson Alvarez?

As reported by Football Insider on Sunday, West Ham are ‘confident’ that a deal can be struck to secure the signing of Ajax enforcer Alvarez.

The report claims that talks are ‘ongoing’ regarding the possible transfer of the player, who is ‘interested’ in a move to the Premier League.

Ajax could sell the midfielder for a price in the region of £35m-£40m, in what would be a strong acquisition for the Hammers.

How good is Edson Alvarez?

Captured by the Eredivisie greats from Mexican side America in 2019, the defensive-minded ace has risen up the ranks in Europe, showcasing his versatility.

Hailed as “tenacious” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the 25-year-old is primarily deployed as a defensive midfielder by Maurice Steijn, with the ability to play at centre-back and full-back as well.

By signing Alvarez, West Ham could equip their side with added quality, in a move that could inspire Moyes’ squad to climb the table and avoid another relegation-threatened season.

There is an abundance of quality in the squad at the London Stadium, however only a number of stars can be relied on consistently to produce moments of magic.

One player of such calibre is Lucas Paqueta, who was signed from Olympique Lyon last summer.

The Brazilian scored five goals and registered seven assists in his first campaign in east London, in what was a trialling first year in a side that battled in the bottom half of the table.

Signing a player of the quality of Alvarez could give the dazzling 25-year-old further freedom to exploit his talent at West Ham, with the Mexican proving to be the perfect outlet for cover in the engine room.

As per FBref, the Ajax ace averaged 2.47 tackles and 3.38 aerial wins per 90 in the Eredivisie last season, flexing his suitability to act as the protector of the defence.

Being able to protect the back line is half of the job for a midfielder, with a strong progressive outlet also required to transition play efficiently.

The 69-capped Mexico international highlighted his perfect balance in the role, averaging 7.76 progressive passes and a monstrous 83.91 attempted passes per 90, via FBref, suggesting how comfortable he is with his distribution.

For Paqueta, the introduction of Alvarez could be pivotal to him unlocking more elements to his game, with protection similar to what he had at Lyon in Thiago Mendes.

Last term, the Brazilian averaged 0.13 non-penalty goals per 90, compared to his 0.30 per 90 in Ligue 1 the campaign prior, where he had the freedom to roam thanks to the combative nature of his midfield partner Mendes.

Moyes could not only replace Rice with the 25-year-old but also prompt the development of other talents in the squad for the overall benefit of his side’s collective form.

Liverpool Linked With Summer Transfer For Belgium Wonderkid

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Rennes and Belgium winger Jeremy Doku, but face stern competition from Aston Villa for his services.

How old is Jeremy Doku?

The attacker is currently 21 years of age and is considered a bright young prospect, having already scored 11 goals and added ten assists in 90 appearances for Rennes since joining in 2020. Last season, he registered ten goal contributions (six goals and four assists) in all competitions.

Doku didn't always manage to be a regular starter throughout 2022/23, however, with a number of injuries holding him back, and he may be eyeing a fresh challenge elsewhere beyond this summer. His current Rennes contract expires in 2025 and it would be a surprise if he was still at the Ligue 1 club at that point, given his potential.

While Liverpool's emphasis this summer has been on signing midfielders, and with centre-back also an area of focus, it looks as though a surprise attacking reinforcement could now be on the cards, which is where Doku enters the equation.

Could Liverpool sign Jeremy Doku?

According to Caught Offside, Liverpool are eyeing a summer more for the 14-cap Belgium international, but they aren't alone in expressing an interest in him:

"Liverpool and Aston Villa are among the clubs interested in the potential transfer of Rennes winger Jeremy Doku as he sets his sights on a move to the Premier League.

"Sources with a close understanding of the situation have informed CaughtOffside that Villa are currently showing the strongest interest in Doku, though they are also currently waiting to find out what happens with Moussa Diaby.

"Liverpool, meanwhile, have also made checks on Doku in recent times but are currently focused on strengthening other areas of their squad such as midfield and defence, even if there is a long-term appreciation of the Belgium international, whose current contract expires in 2025."

This is an intriguing update from a Liverpool perspective, with Doku potentially being viewed as a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah, who is 31 years of age now and arguably not likely to remain at Anfield beyond 2025, when his current deal runs out.

The Rennes man is happy thriving on either flank, but he was used more on the right-hand side last season, which is of course the position that Salah has taken up down the years.

That being said, Liverpool do look well-stocked in attack for now, considering Salah, Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo are all battling for minutes and all represent strong options, so it is hard to see where Doku would fit in right now, should he want to start for a new side from the off.

Revisiting the transfer this time next year could make more sense, unless he has joined Villa or another club by that point, especially if the mutual decision has been made for Salah for depart with a year remaining on his contract.

The Rennes ace has been described as "The Belgian Flash" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, who added that he is "finally showing what he is capable of", while Paris Saint-Germain and France superstar Kylian Mbappe has also shown his appreciation for him in the past also, highlighting his potential.

Javed and Naveed demolish PNG

Seamers Amjad Javed and Mohammad Naveed shared six wickets between them to dismiss PNG for 102 and set up a five-wicket win for UAE in the first T20I in Abu Dhabi. Debutant left-arm spinner Sultan Ahmed, who took the the new ball, also impressed by taking 1 for 12 in four overs.UAE lost three early wickets in the chase, but Shaiman Anwar’s 25-ball 39 ensured they completed the win with 29 balls to spare. After UAE opted to field, Sultan struck in the first over to have PNG opener Vani Morea caught behind for a duck. Javed then had Lega Siaka caught at mid-on for a duck as well. By the tenth over, PNG had slipped to 41 for 4, but Sese Bau and Mahuru Dai mounted some resistance with 22 and 31 respectively. Norman Vanua was the only other PNG batsman to reach double figures as Naveed carved through the middle and lower order. UAE folded when Rohan Mustafa bowled Willie Gavera in the 19th over.Mustafa was then the first UAE batsman to be dismissed when Vanua had him caught behind. Before the end of the Powerplay, UAE had been reduced to 46 for 3, but Anwar offset the early wobble, hitting four fours and a six. He was bowled by Reva in the tenth over, and Muhammad Usman soon followed, but Mohammed Quasim and Ghulam Shabber sealed victory with an unbroken 19-run stand.

Manohar agrees to stay on temporarily as ICC chairman

Shashank Manohar has agreed to defer his resignation as ICC chairman at least until the new governance and financial models are voted on at the next round of meetings in April

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Mar-2017

Shashank Manohar has decided to stay on as ICC chairman, for a while at least•IDI/Getty Images

Reactions

Cricket Australia chairman David Peever: “This resolution is a clear indication that whilst the Board may not yet agree on the detail of our reform process, we are committed to the overarching philosophies of it. We all believe that Shashank should be the man to see it through and whilst respectful of a decision made for personal reasons, we are delighted that he has agreed to remain in post until the completion of the 2017 Annual Conference where we can elect a successor.”
BCB president Nazmul Hassan: “For the greater interest of cricket, we need Shashank as the chairman of ICC especially at this critical juncture. He can be assured of our full support.”
ECB president Giles Clarke: “I am very pleased that the team effort has convinced Shashank about how important it is he leads through these discussions to take us to the new constitution, new Full Members and respecting the rights of all Full Members. It has been a great collegiate effort.”

Shashank Manohar has agreed to defer his resignation as ICC chairman until the body’s annual conference in June this year. That, cricket’s leading administrators hope, will give them enough time to implement the changes to the governance and financial models of the ICC, changes behind which Manohar has been a significant presence. The u-turn in Manohar’s stance, following his surprise resignation earlier this month, came after an ICC board resolution earlier this week that requested him to stay with “overwhelming support”.”I respect the sentiments expressed by the Directors and the confidence they have reposed in me. In the light of this, and although my decision to depart due to personal reasons has not changed, I am willing to continue as Chairman till the responsibility as per the resolution is complete,” Manohar said in an ICC release.”I have a duty to work with my colleagues to enable a smooth transition and continue our work on the governance of the ICC.”Efforts to try and convince Manohar to change his mind had begun almost as soon as his resignation was made official. A number of board directors have been in touch with him since. Those contacts were supplemented by a meeting in India a few days ago between Manohar and the CA chairman David Peever and ICC Development Committee head Imran Khwaja, which is believed to have been an important one in convincing him.On March 15, Manohar had caught much of the cricket world by surprise when he announced his decision to step down as ICC chairman, offering nothing more than “personal reasons” as an explanation. The development raised concerns over whether the new ICC constitution, for which Manohar was the driving force, would be passed at the April meetings, when specific points in the document will come up for vote.In principle the constitution had passed at the ICC board meeting in February. Seven Full Members had voted in favour but the BCCI and Sri Lanka Cricket had voted against the new constitution, while Zimbabwe Cricket abstained. Since then, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has expressed reservations against some aspects of the new constitution. The Indian board’s primary objection to the new constitution is the financial model, according to which the BCCI stood to make substantially less than it did under the existing model, which was devised by the Big Three. It was revealed that Manohar had met with the BCCI’s Committee of Administrators the evening before he announced his resignation to discuss the new ICC constitution, though he said he had already made up his mind to quit before the meeting.Significantly, the BCCI, with whom Manohar has had a complex relationship since he became an independent ICC chairman last year, endorsed the decision, along with other major directors. “It is important that the current issues are resolved to everyone’s satisfaction,” Vikram Limaye, a member of the BCCI’s CoA, said. “We had a productive meeting with Mr Manohar recently wherein we outlined the concerns of BCCI on the financial model and governance issues and our suggestions for resolution. We are committed to working with ICC for a satisfactory resolution of these issues.”On Wednesday, the CoA had also spoken of how they intend to proceed on issues related to the ICC in the run up to the April board meeting. The tone of those messages suggested a shift from the more abrasive stance the BCCI has employed towards the ICC in recent years, to a more conciliatory one.
