Sunderland’s 8/10 star outshone Pritchard against Preston

Michael Beale picked up his second win as Sunderland manager to start 2024 off for the Black Cats in great fashion, the Championship promotion hopefuls comfortably overcoming Preston North End 2-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Beale's men were clinical in front of goal instead of spurning chances in this encounter, Alex Pritchard's stunning opener early on setting the pace whilst Nazariy Rusyn looked relieved scoring his first Sunderland strike at the tenth time of asking to secure the three points.

Pritchard coming back into the starting eleven was a masterstroke of a selection decision by Beale, replacing an unfit Patrick Roberts in the lineup and playing the role of a livewire throughout for his team in the win over the Lilywhites.

Alex Pritchard's game vs Preston in numbers

Although the Sunderland number 21 was put down as a winger when the teamsheet was announced, Pritchard was far more comfortable drifting into pockets of space centrally in the game and exploiting a lack of Preston shirts closing him down.

Drifting into a free part of the Stadium of Light turf allowed the experienced midfielder to open the scoring in the game, the 30-year-old midfielder almost egged on to shoot from distance by the Preston shirts failing to pick him up.

Expertly taken by Pritchard – a wonderful swerving effort tricking Freddie Woodman in the North End net – the goal was surprisingly the former Huddersfield Town's man first strike of the season.

The attacking midfielder was lively away from just this wondergoal, successful with three dribble attempts in the game – as per Sofascore – when advancing forward alongside getting stuck in when needed with three ground duels won.

This stellar individual display against Ryan Lowe's Lilywhites means he will more than likely get more first-team opportunities in the weeks to come, an infrequent starting player under the previous managerial reign of Tony Mowbray.

One player who has been a colossus all season shone also in the 2-0 win, Pritchard's standout display stealing the headlines but Pierre Ekwah was equally important in helping the Black Cats comfortably beat the visitors from Lancashire.

Pierre Ekwah's performance vs Preston in numbers

Ekwah might not have had an audacious strike up his sleeve in the game, but the current Nottingham Forest transfer target was solid and dictated play from a holding position.

Amassing 71 touches in the game, the Black Cats number 39 only misplaced five passes in total with one of those accurate passes going down as an assist for Pritchard's sensational strike.

The 21-year-old showcased his defensive capabilities in the contest as well, winning six of his seven ground duels to thwart the Lilywhites venturing forward and to help his side keep a clean sheet.

Sunderland midfielder Pierre Ekwah.

It led to football journalist Andy Tomlinson of the Roker Report handing out an 8/10 rating to Ekwah in his post-match thoughts, stating that the ex-West Ham United youngster was a 'big presence' all over the pitch in the 2-0 win.

Sunderland sit pretty in sixth spot now after that assured victory on their own patch, with a mouth-watering Tyne-Wear Derby up next for Beale's Black Cats in Cup action as a New Year treat.

Vernon Philander's return amps up pressure on Pakistan's middle order

One source of hope for the visitors is the potential presence of Mohammad Abbas, who missed the first Test with a shoulder injury

The Preview by Liam Brickhill02-Jan-2019

Big PictureBut for one mad, self-destructive session, Pakistan might have maintained their grip on the first Test, but instead they have conceded a series lead and the pressure is on to bounce back at Newlands. A similar second-innings meltdown cost them the Test match, and the series, against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi late last year, but the issues go further back than that for Pakistan and this is becoming a perennial problem. After the first Test, captain Sarfraz Ahmed pointed to the game against New Zealand in Hamilton just over two years ago, when Pakistan collapsed from 131 for 0 to 230 all out, as the start of the rot, and middle-order fragility has only become more acute since the retirements of Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq.Not including Babar Azam’s 71 and Shan Masood’s 65, Nos. 3 to 7 contributed 74 runs across two innings in Centurion, and there will likely be little let-up at Newlands, despite the benign appearance of the pitch. South Africa’s attack was strong enough to end the first Test inside eight sessions, and the return of Vernon Philander at a ground where he has made a habit of demolishing batting line-ups will only make things harder for the visitors.South Africa will have to figure out how to fit Philander into their starting XI. Given how heavily seam dominated in the first Test, Keshav Maharaj might at first appear to be the candidate to sit out, but spin could be important in a Test expected to go the distance. With South Africa’s middle order faring only slightly better than Pakistan’s, Temba Bavuma and Hashim Amla’s fifties notwithstanding, Philander’s batting skills could also make a useful difference at a ground where he scored a first-class century on his comeback from injury in October.Come-from-behind fightbacks aren’t as rare as they used to be in Test cricket, and South Africa’s approach to Cape Town will be anything but blase with a potential series win at stake. Pakistan may not be the happiest team at the moment, but they have been cornered and they still have the personnel to fight back – particularly now that they are picking from an (almost) fully-fit squad.Form guideSouth Africa WLLWW (last five Tests, most recent first)
Pakistan LLWLWIn the spotlightSarfraz Ahmed bagged a pair at Centurion, Faf du Plessis joining him in a bit of history as both captains went scoreless through the match. Du Plessis managed to joke about his own lapse, but Sarfraz might struggle to see the lighter side of things in the current context. Already under pressure, both his leadership and his performance will be under the microscope in Cape Town.Vernon Philander has an outstanding record at Newlands – as du Plessis put it, Philander and Newlands “go together like peanut butter and syrup”. Philander has had a difficult year injury-wise, a recurring ankle injury flaring up after the tour of Sri Lanka, with his return then being stalled by a hairline fracture in his thumb. The comfort of home-ground conditions will certainly ease Philander’s transition back into the side.A dejected Sarfraz Ahmed•AFP

Team news”Vernon picks himself at Newlands and his record speaks for itself, so he will definitely be back in the side,” du Plessis said after Centurion, and with the South African captain also confirming on the eve of the second Test that Duanne Olivier would be in the starting XI, South Africa have some reshuffling to do. They could drop their spinner or shorten the top order, but the option that might make the most sense to them is to rest one of the other quicks. Dale Steyn only took three wickets at Centurion, while Kagiso Rabada admitted ahead of the second Test that the last three months had been tiring for him, and he could possibly do with a breather. It would be very tough to leave either out with the series still alive, but South Africa have a choice to make.South Africa (probable): 1 Dean Elgar, 2 Aiden Markram, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Theunis de Bruyn, 5 Faf du Plessis (capt), 6 Temba Bavuma, 7 Quinton de Kock (wk), 8 Vernon Philander/Dale Steyn, 9 Kagiso Rabada, 10 Keshav Maharaj, 11 Duanne OlivierWhile Haris Sohail is still on the sidelines, Mohammad Abbas and Shadab Khan have recovered from injury, and Pakistan will have to decide whether to stick with the team that failed on the Highveld or ring the changes. While the bowlers didn’t do too badly in the first Test, the middle order could do with some bolstering.Pakistan (probable): 1 Imam-ul-Haq, 2 Fakhar Zaman, 3 Shan Masood, 4 Azhar Ali, 5 Asad Shafiq/Mohammad Rizwan, 6 Babar Azam, 7 Sarfraz Ahmed (capt/wk), 8 Mohammad Amir, 9 Yasir Shah, 10 Hasan Ali, 11 Shaheen Afridi/Mohammad AbbasPitch and conditionsRabada was confident in his assertion that South Africa believe they have the best bowling attack in Test cricket, but he wasn’t so sure they’d steamroll Pakistan’s batting again on a Newlands track he said looked “dull”. While the ball can nip around at Newlands, the track can also sometimes be a little slow, and the bowlers may have to toil for their wickets. The Cape’s weather can be changeable, but it should be set fair at this time of year, if a little windy.Stats and trivia Vernon Philander needs one more wicket to reach 50 wickets at Newlands, a ground where he averages 16.55 with a strike rate of 35.1. Pakistan have played three Tests at Newlands and lost each of them. The last time Pakistan played a Test here, Asad Shafiq scored a century, Vernon Philander took nine wickets in the match, Saeed Ajmal took ten, and South Africa won by four wickets.Quotes”They’re a never-say-die team. You never really know what they can throw at you on the day. They’ve got some quality bowlers, and they’ve got some batters who have shown that they can bat and they can hang around. So we’ve got our work cut out for us.”

Pace, bounce and live grass – Perth surface gets India excited

You can take the cricket out of the WACA Ground but not the WACA Ground out of the cricket. One of the most defining characteristics of the WACA Ground was its pitch, and Perth Stadium is now making its debut with feverish anticipation around the pitch. Four of the nine questions put to Virat Kohli in his pre-match press conference centred around the pitch. The curator Brett Sipthorpe has said they are trying to deliver the fastest, bounciest pitch they can, with no commercial pressures to make the Test go the distance. One of the curious things about this Perth pitch is the amount of grass on it. The WACA Ground was known for its bounce, but it used to be a hard, brown surface. This one could add seam movement to the bounce. The pitch has left India excited. They have prior experience of a similar quick and bouncy pitch in Johannesburg earlier this year. So bouncy that it bordered on the dangerous, with play even stopped for a while. With the quick bowlers at India’s disposals, Kohli was almost salivating at the prospect of playing on a pitch that is not shaved of the lush green look it wore on the match eve.ALSO READBattered and bruised Elgar says Test should have been called off“I was pretty happy to see the pitch the way it is, I hope no more grass is taken off it,” Kohli said. “That would mean that the first three days would be very lively. We as a team are pretty happy with that. We just have to challenge ourselves as a batting unit and play positively and back the bowlers to do what they did at Adelaide. I think this pitch is going to offer significantly more than the one at Adelaide. That is something we are very excited about.”We certainly get more excited than nervous looking at lively pitches. We understand that we have a bowling attack that can bowl out the opposition now. When you have four, five bowlers at the peak of their ability, it is always a great feeling to have that in the side. And for us as batsmen also it gives us a lot of motivation and boosts us up that we can put in those significant match-winning performances because we have so much belief in our bowling unit right now and we know that if we bat well, we will definitely get the result we want.ESPNcricinfo

“It is a very exciting phase to be in, but something we need to build on. We cannot be complacent and be satisfied with just one win. We need to keep repeating the good things to win a series. Away is always challenging but even if you want to win games at home, you need to be consistent and that is something that we are working on.”Johannesburg remains a big inspiration for India. “I have played all around the world for ten years now, and I have never played on a wicket like the one at Johannesburg, to be honest,” Kohli said. “I have played at Perth as well in 2012 but it was not even close to what Johannesburg was. Look we are not alien to pitches like these and we have played on them in the past and this is nothing new for us. We know what to expect on a pitch like this and as I said on a lively wicket where there is grass on the pitch and the surface being hard, you are as much in the game as the opposition.”And there are no favourites, whichever team plays well and whichever team is brave enough to tackle these conditions wins on tough wickets. We are definitely confident about the percentage of chances we have and we are going to build on that.”It obviously helps to have fast bowlers who are fit and accurate. “I guess I am just lucky that when they are at their peak I am the captain,” Kohli said. “To be honest, I haven’t gone scouting for them, they have been playing for a while and it is just that these five have come into their own when I was the captain. So I am not going to sit here and take credit for unleashing someone. They have been working hard on their game and as a captain, I am really proud to have these guys at the peak of their powers.”As a captain, I am just grateful that these guys are at their peak time right now and it is helping Indian cricket. The way they have bowled on the last three tours, it is amazing. They are hungry for wickets and are not giving away easy runs and I am sure it is very exciting for those who are watching us play.”***Brett Sipthorpe, the Perth Stadium curator, has promised a fast, bouncy pitch not dissimilar to the one in the only Shield game at this debutant stadium. That match produced a four-day finish with scores of 261, 198, 253 and 212. Hosts Western Australia sent New South Wales in only to regret the decision. Thirty-two of the 40 wickets fell to pace, but Nathan Lyon took seven wickets in the match for New South Wales. Trent Copeland, who played in the game, wrote he was reminded of the old WACA Ground pitch. While this has more grass than the usual WACA Ground pitches, Sipthorpe predicts similar pace and bounce.”We’ve just been told to make it fast, make it bouncy if you can and run with it,” Sipthorpe said. “I don’t know what’s happened in the past, I’ve heard lots of rumours about commercial pressures and that sort of stuff, but I’ve had no correspondence about that. We’re just trying to produce the bounciest pitch we can.”The players’ assessment from the Shield game was very much the same as across the road, which was great. It’s basically what we’ve been asked to do: provide pace, bounce, a bit of live grass and let’s play cricket.”Sipthorpe doesn’t expect it to crack as much as the Shield game surface did, but they are aiming for all the other attributes. “We’re aiming for it to be identical to what we had in that game,” Sipthorpe said. “That was a perfect day one for us. Jhye Richardson took eight, and Kurtis Patterson got a hundred. You can make runs if you want to grind it out but the bowlers have the upper hand, and that’s what you want to see on day one.”We do a lot of testing, so we’ve got a lot of benchmarked data that says this is very similar to what we had for the Shield. So we’re confident in how it’ll play.”

Injured Usman Khawaja in doubt for India Test series

Australia’s No. 1 available batsman Usman Khawaja may be out of action for up to eight weeks, placing his availability for the home Test series against India in doubt, after he suffered a meniscal tear to his left knee that is likely to require surgery. After twisting his left knee in warm-ups before day three of the Abu Dhabi Test against Pakistan, there were concerns that Khawaja had reinjured the anterior cruciate ligament that was reconstructed in 2014.While overnight scans cleared Khawaja’s ACL, the meniscal tear that was located will require a recovery time of anywhere from three to eight weeks, which is also dependent on whether surgery is required. Khawaja will consult a knee surgeon on his return home from the UAE. Already missing Steven Smith and David Warner due to suspension until April next year, the national team could ill-afford to lose Khawaja for any length of time, as their only remaining proven quantity as a Test batsman. It remains uncertain whether Khawaja will bat in Australia’s fourth innings of the Test, with his levels of knee function and pain to be monitored across the day. He did not take the field at all on day three after suffering the injury.Following a seemingly innocuous incident in a fielding drill, he hobbled off the field for assessment and treatment, where he would remain throughout Pakistan’s second innings. Initially it was thought Khawaja would only be off the field for a handful of overs, but ultimately he was absent all day, which meant he was ruled out of batting until No. 7 in the batting line-up, or until Australia had occupied the crease for the equivalent amount of time that he was missing from the field. The seam bowler Peter Siddle said many of the squad were unaware that Khawaja had hurt his knee until they saw him unable to join them for the start of play. “Nah we didn’t see it, some of the guys might’ve but I didn’t, he hasn’t really said too much,” Siddle said. “Disappointing for him but he’s getting a scan later tonight and they’ll send it to the people who need to have a look at it in the next day or so and we’ll find out more. At this stage that’s all we know. Just fingers crossed for him, hopefully it comes back positive for him and he can get back out there.”It was just something in warm-up, we were throwing the ball. So that’s about all I know, I don’t know what specifically happened, but something so small it’s kept him out. So disappointing for him but fingers crossed he gets some good news tonight. Initially [he was] very flat, as anyone would know, knowing that he can’t get out there with the boys and help out.”But I think throughout the day he was up and about, moving around, helping us when we came in and trying to help us in the rooms. He’s a positive guy, so fingers crossed for him and we get some good news tonight or tomorrow. Tonight once he’s got the scan and we know more that’ll determine from the doctor’s point of view what he can and can’t do. That’s the big thing at the end of the day and just looking after his welfare. We’ll see how that comes up tomorrow and we’ll go from there.”In the wake of Khawaja’s career-defining double of 85 and 141 to save Australia’s blushes in Dubai, the gulf left when he cannot make runs was demonstrated when his early dismissal on the first evening here led to an inadequate first-innings tally of 145 that effectively surrendered any chance of victory in the match to Pakistan. After Sarfraz Ahmed’s team went on to set Australia a distant 538 to win in more than two days, the team coached by Justin Langer was left with a minimum of 192 overs to survive, with Khawaja’s role in proceedings severely restricted. His was the second injury problem for the Australians in this match, after Mitchell Starc complained of hamstring tightness at the start of Pakistan’s second innings having sustained a heavy workload in Dubai. The effect on Starc’s ability to cover the ground was confirmed by his placement at slip for much of the innings, while he was restricted to bowling a mere seven overs across two spells – four overs with the first new ball, three with the second. Siddle, so effective in the Big Bash League for the tournament-winning Adelaide Strikers last season, will be kept in the Twenty20 squad as cover. After Dubai, amid the reverie of Australia’s successful rearguard, Langer had commented on the physical and mental toll of Test matches, particularly those played in the UAE desert, where temperatures have routinely hovered near 40C with considerable humidity.”I said to Travis Head actually when he missed out on the T20 side,” Langer said. “At the end of this second Test you’ll be coming and giving me a hug. “And Finchy said it to me today as well because Test cricket is so tiring. Physically and mentally, it’s so draining. But that’s all part of the back-to-back Test matches, especially with our young guys. We were going to have to recharge the batteries as well as we can and then have another crack at it. They’re all important Test matches.”The other batsman expected to shoulder more responsibility while Smith and Warner are banned was Shaun Marsh, but a perfectly-pitched ball from Mir Hamza on the third evening completed a wretched series for the 35-year-old, tallying just 14 runs at 3.5 in four innings. Remarkably this is not Marsh’s poorest series in Tests, after he managed just 17 at 2.83 against India in 2011-12. That run of outs was followed by an extended absence from the team, lasting until the 2014 tour of South Africa.October 19, GMT 0530 The story was updated to include the findings of the scan on Khawaja’s knee.

England handling 'tough moments' better – Rahane

The India vice-captain feels his side has not done much wrong in this Test series, but the hosts have just been better

Nagraj Gollapudi at The Oval06-Sep-20181:19

England played better cricket in crucial sessions – Rahane

Patience, focus, consistency, winning minor duels in a session and then winning multiple sessions – these are the things India have not been able to master and England have. And that is reason England have won the Pataudi Trophy 3-1 against the No. 1 Test team. This is how India vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane sums up events in the series thus far. India have done “nothing wrong”, he feels, but England have just been “better”.Rahane, whose resolute second-innings half-century was one of the few highlights of the Indian batting in the Southampton defeat, said India just have to persevere in the final match of the series, which also happens to be his 50th Test. “In Test cricket you have to win each and every session,” Rahane said. “You look to win each and every session. I don’t think we did anything wrong, but England played better cricket. They were consistent in their bowling, they bowled with patience.”Rahane admitted that the Indian batsmen, despite being an experienced unit, “fell short”, failing to back up the hard work of the fast bowlers who dominated England virtually all through the first four Tests. In the high-pressure passages, he said, England consistently came out on top. “When you travel abroad, every session you have to give 100%. Many times there are tough moments. In those tough moments, how you capitalise and how you capture them is very important. In my opinion England did that very nicely. When they were in a tough situation, the way their Nos. 7, 8, 9 batted, their contributions were very important. Even their bowling, even though we were batting well, they showed patience in their bowling. That is the only reason they are 3-1.”Rahane has been one of India’s best overseas batsmen, but on this tour he has failed to convert starts despite watchful beginnings. He has only two half-centuries in eight innings and is the third-best Indian batsman in terms of runs scored (220) behind Kohli (544) and Cheteshwar Pujara (241). Kohli has scored more than twice the runs of any other batsman across both teams.Rahane said Kohli entered the series with everyone talking about his nightmarish tour of England in 2014, when he struggled to put bat on ball and was exposed by James Anderson. Rahane said the reason Kohli has succeeded was because he kept his focus on the ball and nothing else, something he and the other India batsmen can only learn from. “As far as Virat’s batting is concerned, the way he conducted himself, the way he showed the consistency… There were a lot of people talking about him, whether he would perform in England or not, but in my opinion his focus was solely on playing cricket and he did not pay attention to anything else.”We all should learn from him, about how your focus should be on what you need to pay attention to. As a team-mate and as our captain, we have a lot to learn from him and we have learned a lot from him.”

Ben Raine joins Durham in significant boost to club's rebuilding

Raine, a seam-bowling allrounder, started his career at Durham but left in search of greater opportunity in 2013

George Dobell03-Sep-2018Ben Raine is to leave Leicestershire for Durham at the end of the season.Raine, a seam-bowling allrounder who had been the subject of interest from Warwickshire among other clubs, started his career at Durham but left in search of greater opportunity in 2013. He has subsequently developed into a fine bowler – he is Leicestershire’s top wicket-taker in the 2018 Championship season with 45 at 22.75 apiece – and a more than useful lower-order batsman who recently thrashed a maiden T20 century. While Raine was not out of contract until the end of 2019 – he had also been offered a contract extension that would have secured his future at Leicestershire until the end of 2020 – there was an understanding with the club that he could leave in some circumstances. It is understood that, in recent weeks, Raine has explained to the club he would like to return to his native north-east for personal reasons and Leicestershire have agreed to release him. He is expected to remain available for selection for the rest of the season as the club pursue their outside promotion hopes.”We are hugely disappointed to lose Rainey as his commitment and performances over the years have been immense,” Leicestershire head coach Paul Nixon said. “The club gave Ben his county cap earlier this season because he embodies exactly what it means to be a Fox.”We made Ben a very good offer to stay, because he has been a key member of the squad and we dearly wanted him to continue his career with us. But the club understands that due to his personal circumstances changing, he wants to return and be closer to his family at his home near Durham.”We know that he remains committed to supporting our push for promotion over the next four matches. Everyone at the club wishes Ben well with his new start at Durham.”Raine’s return provides quite a boost to Durham’s attempts to rebuild after a couple of challenging years and might reflect their improving financial position. Born in Sunderland, he fits the bill as the club try to build a culture of locally-developed players while aged 26, he should still have the best years of his career ahead of him. He retains England ambitions though he may, from a county perspective, turn out to be that almost ideal acquisition: a talented, ambitions all-rounder who might not quite be good enough to sustain a long-term place in the international game.”The decision to move away from Grace Road was a tough one,” Raine said. “But the opportunity to move back north, to be around family and friends and to play for the club I grew up supporting, was too good to miss.”The last six years at Leicester have been incredible. They took a gamble on me, invested time and effort into my game and life, and I will always be grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given by the club.”Leicestershire are also fighting to keep Zak Chappell, the fast bowling allrounder who has attracted interest from several of the biggest clubs, while their dispute with former captain Michael Carberry drags on. Carberry walked out in the club after he was sacked as captain a few weeks into the season. It seems more likely Chappell has a future at the club than Carberry.

Journalist takes aim at "dreadful" Arsenal player

Arsenal, following an impressive start to the Premier League season, which saw them remain unbeaten after five games and even defeat Manchester United along the way, faced their toughest test yet in the form of the North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

The Gunners looked on course to seal all three points once again at stages, but were forced to settle for a point by the time the full-time whistle came, after goals from Hueng-min Son cancelled out Bukayo Saka's strike and Cristian Romero's own goal to end things at 2-2. One particular Arsenal player had a cameo to forget, and journalist James Olley did not hold back when aiming his criticism.

What did James Olley say?

Arsenal were in dreamland when Saka cooly converted from the spot in the second-half to give his side the lead, but Spurs burst that bubble almost as quickly as it had been formed, with Son combining well with James Maddison to equalise merely moments later. The goal, it must be said, was an avoidable one, with substitute Jorginho losing the ball in a dangerous position.

The former Chelsea man was introduced at half-time, and had a cameo to forget, resulting in criticism from Olley, who took to X to say:

"afc 2-2 thfc Instant reply. Son levels again from Maddison's pass. Dreadful from Jorginho, caught in possession."

Mikel Arteta will be incredibly disappointed with his midfielder, especially considering that Saka had only just restored Arsenal's lead. Now six games into the season, the Gunners have drawn twice, leaving Manchester City four points ahead at the top of the Premier League table.

Statistically speaking, Jorginho struggled even outside of his mistake. As per Sofascore, the Italian was the worst-rated home player, lost possession four times, lost half of his duels, while also touching the ball fewer times than goalkeeper David Raya. Simply put, it was an afternoon to forget.

How has Jorginho performed this season?

Having Jorginho as an option, on paper, is wise of Arsenal, given his experience at the very best level. This season, however, he has found game-time hard to come by, starting zero games, forced to come from the bench. And it is perhaps that lack of sharpness that cost Arsenal all three points against Spurs, with Jorginho's loose touch leading to Son's second of the game to equalise.

If Rice's early substitution is due to an injury, then Arteta will hope that Jorginho regains form and gets back to the player who is in the top 92 percentile for passes attempted, the top 97 percentile for pass completion rate, and the top 88 percentile for progressive passes per 90, as per FBref. If Arsenal can get that version of the midfielder, then they may not have to worry about a repeat of his mistake against Spurs.

Next up, Arsenal travel to Brentford in the EFL Cup, where they'll hope to return to winning ways, and then focus on the league, looking to close the gap on Manchester City at the top of the league. If they lose any more ground in the title race, then the Gunners may face an uphill battle in the coming months of the campaign.
