ScorecardNineteen wickets fell in two sessions at the renamed Sophia Gardens on the first day of Glamorgan’s opening home championship game, with the seamers relishing the overcast conditions that prevailed throughout the day.Glamorgan suffered an astonishing collapse after lunch, losing all ten wickets for 37 in only 75 minutes, as Darren Stevens and Matt Henry exploited the conditions to share the wickets. When bad light ended play with three overs remaining, Kent were 163 for 9 with a potentially matchwinning lead of 69 , especially if the pitch continues to offer the same assistance in the second innings.Nick Selman and Jack Murphy had put on 57 before lunch, before Stevens dismissed Selman with the second ball after the interval. Henry then had Shaun Marsh caught by the wicketkeeper and thereafter the new ball pair demolished the Glamorgan middle order, with Stevens producing a spell of 4 for 7 in 31 balls. The 42-year-old allrounder ended with 6 for 26, while Henry took 4 for 31, taking his season’s tally to 23 in only his third championship game. Murphy carried his bat for 39, the lowest score for a Glamorgan batsman to bat through the innings since Tom Morgan scored 13 not out against Lancashire in 1922.”We thought we were in for a long day in the field,” Stevens said, “but the roller must have worn off, and everything happened. I kept it as simple as possible, and with Matt bowling so well, we seemed to complement each otherTimm van der Gugten then achieved career best figures for Glamorgan of 6 for 40, although Glamorgan were frustrated by an unbroken stand of 22 for the last wicket between Harry Podmore and Ivan Thomas. The Glamorgan batsmen were undone by swing and seam, with four of Stevens’ six victims trapped leg before, as the home team’s last four wickets fell for three runs.Their bowlers then responded by reducing Kent to 29 for 3, as Van Der Gugten gained two leg before decisions, and Michael Hogan dismissed Heino Kuhn with his second ball. Joe Denly and Zac Crawley then restored Kent’s position with a partnership of 78 for the fourth wicket, with Crawley using his long reach to nullify movement from the pitch. After Kent had established a lead, the fourth wicket pair were out in quick succession, with Denly top scoring with 43, and Crawley becoming the ninth lbw victim of the game. When Will Gidman fell to David Lloyd, Kent had lost four wickets for eleven runs, and Van Der Gugten claimed his fifth wicket when Henry, attacking at every opportunity, skied to Hogan at mid -off.

Man United send scouts to watch "ridiculous" 31 year-old striker – report

Manchester United have their eyes on a proven European goalscorer who could be available for nothing at the end of the campaign, according to recent reports.

What's the latest news involving Manchester United?

The Red Devils will hope to follow up their important 1-0 triumph over Burnley in the Premier League with a victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, where they will begin their defence of the trophy. Mason Mount and his teammate for club and country Harry Maguire have both returned to training with the main group and could be available for selection against Roy Hodgson's men.

Tyrell Malacia, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka will not be available alongside youngsters Amad Diallo and Kobbie Mainoo due to various injury concerns; meanwhile, Turkish goalkeeper Altay Bayindir may be given an opportunity to make his debut for the Premier League giants if Erik Ten Hag decides to rest Andre Onana.

Veteran defender Jonny Evans was a standout for Manchester United in their triumph over Burnley at the weekend and has jumped to the defence of Erik Ten Hag despite recent criticism surrounding the Dutch coach.

Cited by The Mirror, the Northern Ireland international stated: "The manager’s got a good thing going here. I’m a fan of the club, so I was able to watch them a lot last year, been at both finals to support. Like I say, I think the manager’s got a good thing going."

Reports in Spain claim that Manchester United could look to secure a permanent deal for on-loan Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon if he carries on his positive run of performances at Old Trafford.

Who could Manchester United sign?

According to A Bola, via Sport Witness, Manchester United had a scout at Porto's 2-1 victory over Gil Vicente last weekend, in a game which was settled by strikes from Ivan Jaime and Eustaquio.

The report speculates that Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa and left-back Wendell were standouts for the Portuguese giants; however, the most likely player that would've had scouts in attendance is Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi, who is out of contract next summer and would be available on a free transfer.

FC Porto'sMehdiTaremiduring the warm up before the match

Taremi, who has been labelled "ridiculous" by popular Manchester United pundit Rio Ferdinand in the past, has been one of Europe's most clinical forwards when in a Porto jersey, registering 82 goals and 50 assists in 155 appearances across all competitions during his time at the club, as per Transfermarkt.

As per FBRef, Taremi has excelled in comparison to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions in the art of touches inside the attacking penalty area, averaging around 6.92 per 90 minutes in the last 365 days, putting him in the 98th percentile for this metric, proving to be a constant menace.

With young star Rasmus Hojlund in the infancy of his career at Old Trafford, it may make sense to bring in a more experienced head alongside the Denmark international as an alternative to Anthony Martial, who is regularly dogged by injury struggles.

Du Plessis may miss inaugural four-day Test

South Africa’s Test captain Faf du Plessis is in doubt for the inaugural four-day Boxing Day day-night Test against Zimbabwe, as Cricket South Africa opt for a cautious approach to managing his return from injury.Du Plessis has not played any cricket since late October when he hurt his back during the second ODI against Bangladesh. He was initially prescribed six weeks’ rest. However, at the same time, du Plessis had surgery on a problematic shoulder. As a result, he played no part in the recently concluded Ram Slam and was not named in the CSA Invitation XI to play Zimbabwe in a warm-up match scheduled for Wednesday.Mohammed Moosajee, South Africa’s team manager who is also a medical doctor, told ESPNcricinfo last week that du Plessis was “on track”, but also emphasised that a late decision will be taken given the workload over the next three months.”If we reach next week and see that Faf would benefit from another week off, then we will give him that time,” Moosajee said. “We are not going to be foolish with his return, because there is a lot of cricket over the next few months.”After the Zimbabwe Test, South Africa host India for three-Tests starting on January 5, six ODIs and three T20s and then have a four-Test home series against Australia in March.Given that the South African management prefer their players to have some game time after returning from an injury and before representing the national side, it seems a better option for du Plessis to sit out the Test and perhaps even play in the upcoming domestic one-day tournament which starts on Wednesday. South Africa would have a ready-made batting replacement in AB de Villiers, who will play the warm-up match and has declared himself eager for a Test return. They will also likely turn to stand-in captain Dean Elgar, who led the side at Lord’s when du Plessis was on paternity leave.South Africa are only expected to name their Test squad after at least some of the warm-up match has been played and they have monitored the progress of some of their other players. Dale Steyn and Chris Morris are both due to play in the match and could make a return following significant time out of the game. Morne Morkel, who is coming back from a side strain, is not in the squad but recently played a three-day provincial match for Easterns, with positive reasons. He bowled 19.4 overs and took seven wickets for 43 runs.

Important to play five bowlers against good Test sides – Chandimal

The Sri Lanka captain said that using five bowlers – to aid in taking 20 wickets in the match – and staying energetic in the field through the Test was important against Pakistan and will remain so in India

Karthik Krishnaswamy in Kolkata15-Nov-2017When India went to Sri Lanka in July-August and beat them 3-0, they won by some staggering margins: 304 runs, an innings and 53 runs, an innings and 171 runs.Just over a month later, Sri Lanka beat Pakistan 2-0. What changed in between? What did Sri Lanka learn about themselves from those three massive defeats to India that allowed them to go to the sapping heat of the UAE and beat a team that had never lost a series there?”The one thing is, we just tried to play five bowlers, because if you’re playing against a good team you need to take 20 wickets to win,” Dinesh Chandimal, Sri Lanka’s captain, said on the eve of the first Test of his team’s return series against India. “That’s the one area we looked at, and our fielding – we need tokeep our energy levels up for five days, so those are the areas we improved on as a team, and looking forward to implement those things in this series.”Kolkata in mid-November, with overcast skies and persistent rain, will be rather different to the UAE at any time of the year. The Eden Gardens pitch also promises to be very different: green and likely to help the quicker bowlers. Even so, Chandimal suggested Sri Lanka would want to continue playing five bowlers.”Especially in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, we all know the weather – it’s really hot and that’s why we used five bowlers and six batters, so, you know, that’s the combination we’re looking at, especially if you want to win a series you need to get 20 wickets. We haven’t decided anything. We need to see the pitch first and decide tomorrow morning who’s going to play. We saw the pitch yesterday – it was green and hard, so maybe the seamers will come into play in this game.”By deploying the offspin-bowling allrounder Dilruwan Perera at No. 7, Sri Lanka managed to play two seamers and three spinners in the first Test against Pakistan, and three seamers and two spinners in the second. The pitch and the overhead conditions at Eden Gardens are likely to favour playing three seamers, and Sri Lanka could approach this in two ways. The first would be to continue batting Dilruwan at No. 7, and play three specialist quicks in Suranga Lakmal, Lahiru Gamage and Vishwa Fernando.Dilruwan Perera struck in his first over•Francois Nel/Getty Images

Chandimal, however, had said in an earlier press conference that the quality of India’s bowling could make them think of playing an extra batsman. In that case, Sri Lanka have the option of playing Dasun Shanaka, a middle-order batsman who bowls seam-up, instead of one of the three main quicks. If he wasn’t so dogged by injury, Angelo Mathews could have offered them that option, but he will play this series as just a specialist batsman. Chandimal expected the former captain to return to batting form after a difficult couple of years.”If he’s bowling, it gives us more confidence, and we can balance the side really well, but unfortunately, with his injuries, he can’t bowl, especially in Test cricket,” Chandimal said. “But to be having his experience, you know – he was unbelievable in 2013 and 14, so I’m sure he will put his hand up and do his best in this series, and for the batting unit, it gives us very good confidence.”He also indicated that Mathews would move up one spot from his usual No. 5 position.”He’s going to bat at No. 4,” Chandimal said. “That’s [what] we are looking at, because he’s got all the experience. It’s better to send him top of the order and get the maximum out of him.”

Leo Messi Wins Inter Miami Debut With 94th Minute Goal

Making his debut for MLS club Inter Miami, Lionel Messi did what Lionel Messi does and completely stole the show with a stunning last-minute free-kick to win the match.

Did Messi score on his Inter Miami debut?

Having chosen to leave Europe for the first time in his club career earlier this summer, all eyes with be on the ageing Argentine to see how he fares during his spell with David Beckham’s franchise team.

And when we say all eyes, we mean all eyes. Indeed, the official Major League Soccer Twitter feed posted a replay of his free-kick and it already has over 14 million views.

The 36-year-old was making his first appearance for his new club as they came up against Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup. He didn’t start, though, and only came off the bench at the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in the 54th minute.

Inter Miami were actually 1-0 up at this stage, with a first-half goal from Robert Taylor giving them a lead. However, Cruz Azul’s Uriel Antuna pulled things level with an equaliser in the 65th minute.

Not to be upstaged on his big night, of course, Messi stepped up in the dying seconds of the game to remind everyone why he is quite probably the greatest footballer of all time.

Indeed, with 93 minutes and 47 seconds on the clock (beyond the allotted two minutes of injury time) he connected sweetly with his free-kick to curl the ball over the wall and find the top corner.

You can see the footage below in which he scores the winner to make for a fairy tale debut in Florida.

What celebrities were at Messi’s Inter Miami debut?

Of course with it being such a huge occasion, and with it being America, there were obviously some A-list celebrities in attendance at the DRV PNK Stadium.

The likes of Kim Kardashian and Serena Williams were there, while co-owner Beckham was also watching along with his wife Victoria.

Footage shared on Twitter, captured the emotional reaction of these stars the moment Messi’s freekick hit the back of the net as they were all understandably left stunned and delighted in equal measure.

Beckham was even left in tears at the sight of it all.

Incredibly, Inter Miami are currently bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference, with 18 points from their opening 22 matches and this was their first win in seven matches – albeit coming in a different competition, the Leagues Cup.

Promisingly, however, for the club’s fans, it shows that Messi still has plenty of magic left in his boots and so he may well be able to drag them up the table.

And he will also be helped by his new teammate Sergio Busquets, who also happens to be a former Barcelona teammate, while potentially Andre Iniesta and Jordi Alba could be involved too.

Speaking directly after the game, Messi told the Apple TV broadcast (via Yahoo): “What I saw was the goal. I saw the goal, I knew that I had to score.

“It was the last play of the game and I wanted to score so we didn’t go to penalties. So it was very important for us to get this win, because it’s a new tournament this is going to give us confidence moving forward.”

Exciting player has "agreed" on a move to join Howe at Newcastle

Newcastle United could finalise the deal for Leicester City winger Harvey Barnes next week should all go according to plan according to Rudy Galletti.

The Englishman scored 13 Premier League goals last season and is appreciated by Magpies boss Eddie Howe.

Will Harvey Barnes join Newcastle United?

It looks like the Englishman is finally going to secure his long-awaited move to Tyneside.

It was first reported on July 7th by Matt Law that the Champions League side were closing in on a deal for the 25-year-old, who had recently just suffered a devastating relegation with boyhood club Leicester.

harvey-barnes-leicester-premier-league-newcastle-transfers

Newcastle reportedly became the player's first choice, with the side beating out fellow Premier League sides in West Ham United and Aston Villa in convincing the winger to join their club, with manager Eddie Howe being incredibly keen on bringing in the forward who he believes is "tried and trusted" at the Premier League level.

However, according to Sky Sports, the Magpies are yet to submit an official offer for Barnes, with reports stating that the club is waiting on the sale of French attacker Allan Saint-Maximin in order to provide the funds to get the deal over the line.

West Ham has remained in constant contact with Leicester and are in a position to make a move should the potential switch to Tyneside collapse. However, according to Rudy Galleti, who was speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the deal could be finalised next week, with Newcastle willing to pay around £35m for the player that Leicester valued at £40m: “Unless there’s a twist, the next week will be decisive for Barnes to Newcastle. Discussions are ongoing at a good pace and Eddie Howe wants Barnes. Despite the talks being at a good stage between West Ham and Leicester, Harvey Barnes prefers to join Newcastle and he has already agreed the terms of his move. Now it’s up to the clubs, as Newcastle are willing to pay around £35m for the English player. As told, during the next week the deal could be finalised.”

Who else will sign for Newcastle United this window?

Once the side finalises the deal for Barnes, the club's focus should switch to defensive reinforcements.

Newcastle have already made a major move this window, securing the signing of AC Milan maestro Sandro Tonali for a fee reported to be £55m. The young midfielder who had been dubbed as the "next Andrea Pirlo" signed a five year deal and was a massive coup for the Magpies ahead of their first season back in Europe's elite competition in over two decades.

AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali.

The club also pursued attacking midfield options, with reports linking them to both James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai, but both players instead opted for moves to Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool respectively. However, that is a position to keep an eye on for the rest of the summer should a player become available.

Defensively, Newcastle lacks depth, with the club only having three recognised senior centre-halves available in Sven Botman, Jamaal Lascelles and Fabian Schar. Reports have linked Howe's side with a move for Portuguese centre-back Goncalo Inacio, who currently plays for Sporting CP. The player reportedly has a release clause in his contract for €60m (£51.5m), however the Geordie club intends to complete a deal that falls "well below" the value of that clause.

It is an important summer for Newcastle ahead of their return to the Champions League, but securing this deal for Harvey Barnes will be a very positive step forward.

Newcastle Battling Liverpool For Signing Of 22-Year-Old

Newcastle United are battling Liverpool for the signing of Nice midfielder Khephren Thuram this summer, according to journalist Rudy Galetti.

Who is Khephren Thuram?

The Frenchman is arguably one of Europe's most exciting young midfielders at the moment, already becoming a force for Nice and winning one cap for France at senior level.

It appears Thuram has caught the eye greatly, as he has emerged as a strong candidate to join Liverpool during the current transfer window.

However, Newcastle are also believed to be in the mix to sign the 22-year-old as the Magpies look to bolster their squad and provide stern competition for the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton and Sean Longstaff moving forward.

A new update has now emerged regarding Thuram's future as the battle to snap him up continues to intensify.

khephren-thuram-transfer-news-premier-league

What's the latest on Thuram to Newcastle?

Writing on Twitter on Saturday, Galetti said that Newcastle are looking to pounce for the signing of Thuram this summer, while Liverpool are trying to get a deal over the line as quickly as possible:

"Liverpool are speeding things up for Khephren Thuram. LFC want to close the gap with OGC Nice soon to anticipate the competition of Newcastle, which are starting to move concretely for the player: evolving situation."

Thuram could be a special addition to whoever signs him in the next few weeks, considering his long-term potential and the fact that he is already a formidable presence at just 22, with the ace being hailed as "very dangerous" by teammate Aaron Ramsey.

A combative midfielder who can play in a deep-lying or No 8 role – he has even played on the left-hand side of midfield – the £14,000-a-week Frenchman appeared in 35 of Nice's 38 Ligue 1 games last season, suggesting he will have few problems lasting long into next season despite his age, with Newcastle playing in four different competitions for the first time in a while in the upcoming term.

Given the nature of this update and the constant reports linking him with a move to Anfield, it does look as though Liverpool are arguably the favourites to sign Thuram, but the Magpies can offer him Champions League football – unlike the Reds – which could be a big advantage for them.

It is so encouraging to see Newcastle being linked with players of such calibre, regardless of where Thuram eventually ends up, highlighting the vast progress made in a short space of time under Eddie Howe at St James' Park.
