Isak can do the one thing for Liverpool that Haaland never did at Man City

Alexander Isak is finally a Liverpool player. That’s the headline. That’s the saga of the summer and that may well be the deal that commences not only more Anfield glory in the current campaign, but for years to come.

The Reds have been accused of not doing enough in the transfer window in the past. They welcomed a new manager in Arne Slot this time last summer and the only immediate arrival proved to be Federico Chiesa as doubts arrived over Richard Hughes’ ability to get the job done. One year on, those doubts are laughable.

The Reds are in a better place than ever to repeat the dominance that Anfield has been unfortunate enough to watch elsewhere in the Premier League era. But, it must be said, they still need to find a way to make sure all their new pieces connect to form another title-winning machine, especially Isak and Hugo Ekitike.

The Haaland mistake that Liverpool must avoid

On paper, it is the ultimate position of luxury to have two of the world’s best strikers at your disposal. Alas, things on the pitch are slightly different.

Unless managers are willing to sacrifice their systems and midfield numbers to have two strikers lead the line together, there’s a high chance that one high-level forward will have to settle for a place on the bench or an unfamiliar role. And all it takes is one look at Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez to realise how that problem ends.

julian-alvarez-manchester-city-tottenham-hotspur-academy-postecoglou-mikey-moore

The Citizens had the world at their feet for four straight years in the Premier League, with Haaland breaking record after record along the way. Left to watch on, however, was the talented Alvarez. In an ideal world, Pep Guardiola would have found a way for them to click together on the pitch, but it just did not come.

The duo combined for just eight goals in 63 games and Alvarez’s compromise ultimately proved to be untenable as he departed to Atletico Madrid, becoming one of Europe’s most impressive players. It should be seen as one of Guardiola’s biggest regrets, given how they’ve struggled without the forward.

Whilst much of last season’s struggles will be put down to Rodri’s injury, and others that followed, there’s no denying that City became over-reliant on Haaland for goals. The Norwegian did his job – scoring 34 goals in all competitions – but this time there was no Alvarez to swoop in when City’s star suffered a rare off day.

Had Guardiola compromised to find a place for Alvarez, things could have been different for Man City last season. Instead, it was Diego Simeone who benefitted from handing the Argentine 30 starts in La Liga.

It’s not a problem that is going away anytime soon for City, either. This time, it’s Omar Marmoush missing out. The Egyptian arrived in January and handed City an instant attacking boost – scoring seven goals in 16 Premier League games – yet has already found himself pushed out to the left-hand side this season and didn’t start at all against Wolves.

Man City have inadvertently handed Liverpool the exact blueprint to avoid if they want to see both Ekitike and Isak thrive. Now, it’s down to Slot to keep both strikers happy.

How Liverpool could line-up with Isak & Ekitike

Will Slot change his system? Will Ekitike be left to settle for a place on the bench? Or will one find themselves out wide? Those are the questions that only Liverpool can truly answer after the international break, but they’ve certainly got options to ensure that both players enjoy the game time that they deserve.

The easiest way here is to start Ekitike out wide. Unlike Alvarez, the Frenchman has featured in that role before arriving in the Premier League and is arguably a similar profile to Liverpool’s current left-winger Cody Gakpo. Both are towering, physical figures who look to cut inside from the left using their skill and strength.

The Gakpo mould is one that Ekitike should follow if he wants to enjoy his best form from that side. The Dutchman started his Liverpool career as a No.9, before Slot arrived and moved him to the left of the front three. Since then, he has thrived.

Nothing has to be permanent, either. Isak’s injury history suggests that having a player like Ekitike available will prove to make all the difference for the Reds. In one move, Slot would be losing a world-class striker and replacing him with someone who has already stolen the headlines in a Liverpool shirt.

So, although Haaland and Alvarez’s failure should act as a firm warning, there is a way for Liverpool to march towards a successful title defence whilst enjoying both of their big-money strikers.

Garnacho will love him: Chelsea in "further talks" to sign £52m phenom

In a shock to nobody, it’s been another busy summer of transfer activity for Chelsea this year.

The Conference League champions have backed Enzo Maresca in a significant way so far, offloading players deemed no longer good enough and replacing them with a host of exciting talents.

The likes of Jamei Gittens, Joao Pedro, Jorrel Hato and Liam Delap could all develop into world-beaters in West London, and with a few days left until the window slams shut, the Blues are closing in on even more signings, like Alejandro Garnacho.

Yet, if reports are to be believed, Chelsea are looking at bringing in another young attacker, someone the Argentine will love playing with.

Chelsea target dream teammate for Garnacho

Of all the transfer sagas Chelsea have been involved with this summer, the one that has felt like it’s dragged on the longest concerns Garnacho.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

However, after months of stories touting the Manchester United ace for a move to Stamford Bridge, it is finally happening, with a report revealing that his medical was planned to take place earlier today.

The 21-year-old might not be the final signing the West Londoners make this summer, though, as they’re now being heavily linked with another young talent, someone Garnacho will love playing with.

Manchester United's AlejandroGarnachoduring training

At least that is according to a recent report from Ben Jacobs, who claims that Chelsea are still very interested in Fermin Lopez.

In fact, the journalist has revealed that the Blues are now in “further talks” with the player’s camp, and that “initial club-to-club contact has also taken place.”

However, to sell the young attacker, the Spanish giants want a fee in excess of €60m, which is approximately £52m.

Yet, for a player as talented and promising as Lopez, that may be a fee worth paying, especially as he could be the perfect teammate for Garnacho.

Why Garnacho will love Lopez

It might sound rather simplistic, and it probably is, but one of the most significant reasons Garnacho will love playing with Lopez at Chelsea is his output.

Despite being just 21 years old for almost the entirety of last season, the Spanish ace was impressively effective for the Catalan giants.

For example, in 46 appearances, totalling just 2039 minutes, “creative” star, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, scored eight goals and provided ten assists.

That means he managed to average a goal involvement every 2.55 games, or every 113.27 minutes, which is undeniably impressive for someone his age.

Moreover, it highlights the fact that he’s more than capable of providing plentiful goal-scoring opportunities for his teammates, which will be music to the ears of the United ace.

FC Barcelona'sFerminLopezin action with Athletic Bilbao's Mikel Jauregizar

More than that, though, it also makes it clear that he can be an effective goalscorer himself, which in turn could help improve the Argentine’s assist tally.

In addition to his raw output, another reason the Madrid-born gem will love playing with the 22-year-old is his positional versatility.

The reason is twofold, as on the one hand, the El Campillo-born phenom’s ability to play in midfield and on the wing means he’ll have plenty of opportunities to form a partnership with his potential new teammate.

On the other hand, it means he’ll be able to cover for him when he needs a rest.

Finally, the fact that the “spectacular” midfielder, as dubbed by former manager Xavi, is practically the same age as the former Atlético Madrid prospect means they’ll be able to grow and develop alongside one another, further cementing the potential partnership they could build.

Ultimately, while the price might be a little on the high side, Lopez looks like he could be an excellent signing for Chelsea and a brilliant teammate for Garnacho.

O Botafogo entra em campo na próxima quinta-feira, diante do Cuiabá, às 20h, na Arena Pantanal, pelo Brasileirão. A equipe alvinegra busca uma vitória fora de casa para se manter na liderança isolada da competição.

Revealed: The bizarre reason that contributed to Aston Villa chief Monchi leaving Unai Emery's side

Aston Villa president of football operations Monchi has stepped down from his role at the club and now details behind his exit have come to light. Unai Emery's side have had a difficult start to the season after a summer transfer window where they spent just €30 million (£26m). Real Sociedad's former sporting director Roberto Olabe will replace Monchi but all is not well at Villa.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Villa confirmed Monchi's exit on Tuesday, with the club 18th in the Premier League after a winless start to the campaign. He will, however, remain in an advisory role at Emery's team. The club's failure to reach this season's Champions League has hit them hard in terms of what they can spend due to the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules. But how has a relationship that looked so fruitful come apart at the seams?

AdvertisementGetty Images EntertainmentTHE EXPLANATION

On Tuesday, Cadena Ser, via Sport Witness, claimed that Monchi decided to leave Villa due to disagreements with the club. Now, Diario de Sevilla state that there was an 'emotional factor' behind this move and also that the inclement weather in Birmingham had an impact as well. The report adds that sporting and financial aspects have ‘created a perfect climate’ for Monchi to return to Spain, too.

The newspaper article reads: "The grey skies of Birmingham have had as much, if not more, influence on Monchi’s decision than Aston Villa’s poor start, which has only been able to invest around €30m due to exceeding the Premier League’s fair play rules, where it has the lowest salary cap of the 20 teams. Roberto Olabe, a close associate of Unai Emery, is replacing him at Villa Park."

Monchi and Villa on his exit

Villa, who are owned by V Sports, did praise Monchi for his work since joining from Sevilla in 2023.

"Firstly, I would like to thank Monchi for his hard work and invaluable contribution as president of football operations during an exciting period at Aston Villa," chairman Nassef Sawiris said. "His commitment and vision has directly contributed to the club's recent successes, reaching the quarter-finals of the Champions League as well as qualifying for Europe for three consecutive seasons. We are delighted that Roberto is joining Aston Villa. He has built a reputation as someone who can spot talent that can be developed and we look forward to supporting him to achieve the ambitions we have for V Sports and Aston Villa."

And Monchi added: "We have enjoyed so many special moments together and I look forward to continuing to support V Sports in an advisory role."

Forrest upgrade: Celtic "pursuing" deal to sign "exciting" £5m star

Brendan Rodgers has not tried to keep his desire for the Celtic board to bring in more attackers before the end of the summer transfer window a secret.

The Northern Irish head coach has lost Portuguese winger Jota to a long-term ACL injury, and may not have him back until the start of next year, whilst Nicolas Kuhn has been sold to Italian side Como.

Nicolas Kuhn

Speaking earlier this month, Rodgers said: “I think it’s very clear. We need to improve in the front end of the pitch. The attacking department has always, and always will be, the strengths of my teams. We’ve lost important players in that area, and we need to replace players in that area.”

This shows that the Hoops head coach wants to add more attacking players in before September’s deadline, and the wide areas seem an obvious area for improvement.

At this moment in time, James Forrest, Hyun-jun Yang, and Daizen Maeda are the only senior and natural wingers in the squad for what could be a 50-60-game season.

The Scottish Premiership champions need to strengthen their options on the flanks, both because of their lack of depth and their lack of real quality.

Why Celtic need to sign a James Forrest upgrade

Forrest was called upon as a starter in the second game of the league season against Aberdeen after Rodgers was left unconvinced by Yang’s display against St Mirren on the opening day.

The 34-year-old winger is a steady performer for Celtic and will rarely let the team down with abysmal displays, but he is not a game-changer who will consistently make an impact in the final third, and nor should anyone expect him to be at this stage in his career.

Since the start of the 2024/25 campaign, Forrest has only scored one goal and provided seven assists in 36 appearances in all competitions for the Hoops, per Transfermarkt.

Celtic winger James Forrest.

The former Scotland international’s performances in the first two matches of the Premiership outline the kind of role he should have, and the level of output that he can offer at this point in his career.

As you can see in the table above, Forrest did not produce a single shot on target or create any ‘big chances’ for his teammates in either match, but did complete three dribbles and rarely lost possession of the ball.

This further backs up the idea that he should be used sparingly as a back-up option for Rodgers, as was his role in the 2024/25 campaign, rather than being a frontline option because of a lack of signings made in the transfer window.

That is why Celtic need to sign a new winger to be an upgrade on Forrest as a starter, and the club have reportedly identified a top target for that position.

Celtic pursuing deal for Danish star

According to Football Insider, Rodgers is ‘desperate’ to sign a new winger for Celtic and the Hoops have identified Jakbo Breum as their top target to bolster their options out wide.

Speaking to Football Insider, journalist Pete O’Rourke said: “Celtic are pursuing a deal for Jakob Breum from Go Ahead Eagles. He has been the top target for them this summer and they’ve had several bids turned down for him.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

“So if they can’t agree a deal for him, they could return for Balikwisha. Brendan Rodgers wants to bring in a winger, it’s been a key position for him this summer, so he’ll be hopeful they can get a deal over the line.”

Go Ahead Eagles reportedly want a fee of £5m for the Denmark U21 international, but it remains to be seen whether or not the Hoops are prepared to pay that asking price for him.

Brendan Rodgers

Breum is the top target, though, per O’Rourke, and they should push the boat out to pay what is needed to sign him if they feel that he would be the best fit for the squad.

Why Breum would be an upgrade on Forrest

The Danish star is a versatile attacker who can play as a number ten or on either flank, and the Hoops could utilise his talent out on the right wing as an upgrade on Forrest.

Breum would come in and offer more quality at the top end of the pitch as both a scorer and a creator of goals in comparison to the veteran Scotsman, if he can adapt to football in Scotland and translate his performances from the Netherlands over to Glasgow.

The 21-year-old wizard, who was described as an “exciting” talent by Sport Republic video scout RDF Tactics, caught the eye with his impressive performances in the Eredivisie for Go Ahead Eagles in the 2024/25 campaign.

Breum showcased his ability to make an impact as both a scorer and a creator of goals by delivering five assists and scoring ten goals in 26 league appearances for the club, significantly outperforming his xG of 6.27.

As you can see in the table above, the Danish talent outperformed Forrest with his output at the top end of the pitch, despite playing for a Go Ahead Eagles side that finished seventh in the division.

In a dominant Celtic team that consistently wins, as evidenced by their achievement of winning the last four Premiership titles, Breum could have even more opportunities to show off his quality in front of goal as both a finisher and a creative passer.

This means that the £5m-rated star could provide even more goals and assists than he did in the Eredivisie with Go Ahead Eagles, which is why he could be a big upgrade on Forrest, who he already delivered more goal contributions than at league level last term.

At the age of 21, Breum would also arrive at Parkhead as a young player who still has time left ahead of him. This means that Rodgers could work with him on the training pitch to develop and hone his skills to make him a star for the Hoops moving forward.

Big Beto upgrade: Everton have already sold "the new Lukaku"

Everton blanked against Aston Villa at the weekend, but David Moyes must be pleased with his side’s start to the 2025/26 campaign.

An exodus was needed this summer, but the dramatic upheaval on the blue side of the River Mersey emphasised the need for accuracy in the transfer market.

Seven points from four Premier League games and a three-match unbeaten run have given the Toffees a platform, but it could have been three wins from three save for some shoddy finishing against the struggling Villa.

Beto was the culprit.

Beto misfires against Aston Villa

He’s come on leaps and bounds under Moyes’ wing, has Beto, but there’s no doubt that the Bissau Guinean striker has flaws within his game, and is prone to ghosting on different occasions across the campaign.

The 6 foot 4 forward fits Moyes’ mould: he is a tower of a talisman and commands the skies well; he has scored twice across five games in all competitions this season, three of which came from the starting whistle.

But Beto has only one goal in the Premier League, and could maybe have tripled his tally against Aston Villa, horribly scuffing a chance into a yawning net when played through by Iliman Ndiaye.

Thierno Barry was signed in the summer to add competition at number nine, but the 22-year-old is raw and not yet settled within the harsh climes of the Premier League.

It’s at moments like these that some fans might wish for another goalscoring option.

Everton will regret selling Beto upgrade

It’s a shame that Moise Kean didn’t prove to be a talismanic figure in Toffee blue.

Kean initially started his professional career with a weight of expectation, such a prodigy he was billed. Things got a little stagnant, though, it’s got to be said, with his £25m move from Juventus to Everton aged 19 doing little to further his career.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

Under Farhad Moshiri’s ownership, Everton signed Kean in 2019, but it’s not unfair to stress that the Italian failed to bring it together, scoring twice in the Premier League across 32 fixtures, picking up a red card too. The criticism lacing Moshiri’s dysfunctional reign is thick, but a move for Kean spoke of ambition, for sure.

But it didn’t work out, and after a spin of loan spells, Kean found himself back in Turin for a similar figure that Everton first paid for him. Thus, financially, it wasn’t a shocking blow, but the player’s struggles certainly suggest it was a poor signing.

Perhaps viewed as the successor to Romelu Lukaku’s former place in Everton’s team, Kean was one of many misfires in the transfer market during that long and interminable period of struggle, and his recent exploits back in Italy highlight what might have been in England.

Because Kean struggled even after leaving, peripheral at Juventus. But a move to Fiorentina has resurrected his career and then some, having scored 25 goals and supplied three assists across all competitions at La Viola last season.

It’s clear that Kean needed that return to his home country to develop into the player he is today, but Everton saw something and failed to make it work.

Powerful and clinical and with a “scary” physicality, as has been noted by reporter Carlo Garganese, Kean very much might have been Everton’s next version of Lukaku. Indeed, two years after the Belgian’s mammoth sale to Manchester United, it’s not improbable that Lukaku’s name was brought up during internal discussions ahead of the successful bid for the teenager.

His dribbling has come on so much. Data from FBref reveals Kean ranks among the top 14% of strikers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, but also the top 8% for successful take-ons per 90, demonstrating an athleticism that Lukaku used to project with such strength on his opponents.

It’s something Moyes might have made good use of in this current Everton setting. The Merseysiders and their boss have pulled away from pragmatic perceptions and have shaped into a modern hybrid form.

Fifth Everton sit in the xG (expected goals) rankings for the Premier League campaign so far. Early days, of course, but evidence of growth and newfound attacking impetus.

The caveat being they have only scored five goals, highlighting room for improvement in the ball-striking department. It’s not an egregious deficit by any means, but a striker of Kean’s ability could add that difference to stretch Everton even higher up the table.

Lukaku, in his Everton form, would surely be riding the crest of a wave right now, and Kean could be too. The Azzurri star, after all, was named ‘the new Lukaku’ upon his big move to Goodison Park.

So Moyes and Everton have Beto, and that’s not all that bad. The 26-year-old is a strong and sturdy striker; he commands the box well, tussling with defenders and knocking headers down to his teammates. He is a better player for Moyes’ appointment.

Only, Kean is clearly a cut above, and while it’s hopeless to rue missed opportunities to develop stars who weren’t shining at the time, it must be a frustration for the new board.

Whether Barry comes good is another question, and the Frenchman certainly has the potential to overtake Beto and set his marker as Everton’s starring striker, but he’s not there yet, and Kean could have been a difference-maker this season.

Now worth more than Grealish: Everton must regret selling "phenomenal" star

Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa brought into sharp focus Everton’s lack of quality strikers, so they must regret selling this phenomenal striker.

Man Utd want to beat Liverpool to one of the best talents in Europe when he turns 18

Manchester United made a splash in the summer transfer window and now have one of Europe’s brightest talents in their eyeline despite attention from the likes of Liverpool.

Manchester United look to the future under Ruben Amorim

From the sounds of things, the Red Devils are planning for the long-term under Ruben Amorim as the Portuguese boss looks to take forward a squad that has been streamlined in both age and in terms of personnel.

Undoubtedly, his start to the Premier League season has been mixed, coupled with a shock EFL Cup exit to Grimsby Town, but there have been some flickers of his style of play starting to gel after a bruising 2024/25 campaign.

Having to make some difficult calls at Old Trafford, Amorim’s decision to offload Andre Onana on loan to Trabzonspor has led to a change of the guard between the sticks, with Senne Lammens the man to challenge Altay Bayindir for the number one jersey.

Speaking about the decision to sign Lammens from Royal Antwerp, the former Sporting boss outlined that ‘potential’ was the main motivation behind his capture, something that appears to have also manifested itself in the additions of Benjamin Sesko and Diego Leon.

Amorim said: “We are really pleased, he is a goalkeeper with a lot of potential. We are in the moment that the goalkeeper needs to be really strong and have a lot of experience, but we also have to look at the present with a focus on the future so it is a bit of both. He will be ready.”

With further signings set to be on the agenda in January, Manuel Ugarte may be someone who makes way at Manchester United, potentially paving the way for an exciting replacement from the continent.

Man Utd looking to beat Liverpool to sign Ayyoub Bouaddi

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United are looking to beat Liverpool to sign Lille central midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, who will be able to leave the Ligue 1 outfit when he turns 18 years of age.

AC Milan are believed to be heavily interested in the France international. Meanwhile, the Red Devils alongside Arsenal and other keen suitors have taken in his performances this term, and INEOS have made it clear they don’t plan to back down in the race for his signature.

"Exceptional" Man Utd gem was ahead of Amad, but Ten Hag let him go for £0

Manchester United certainly made some questionable decisions during Erik ten Hag’s tenure.

Making a mark at senior level, Bouaddi has notched three assists in 57 appearances for his current employers, though he is able to move to clubs inside the European Union regardless of age, which may allow AC Milan to steal a march on their Premier League competitors.

Renowned for his technical ability in the engine room, the 17-year-old is set to be offered a new contract by Lille, though Manchester United will hope the lure of playing at Old Trafford is too much to refuse compared to other potential avenues.

Former president of Espanyol embroiled in BRAWL during LaLiga clash against Real Betis

Former Espanyol president Joan Collet was caught up in a physical altercation in the VIP area after the final whistle of the club's clash with Real Betis, capping a frustrating day for the Catalan club both on and off the pitch.

  • Collet in shocking brawl

Former Espanyol president Collet was involved in a brawl in the VIP area of the RCDE Stadium following the club's dramatic 2-1 La Liga defeat to Real Betis on Sunday, according to a report from Mundo Deportivo. Images circulating on social media show Collet caught up in a physical altercation that reportedly started after provocative behaviour from visiting supporters.

  • AFP

What happened in the VIP area?

The incident is understood to have taken place just after the final whistle of a tense and ill-tempered match. Sources suggest that several Real Betis fans in the corporate section acted provocatively, leading to a confrontation with Espanyol supporters. Collet, who was president of the club between 2012 and 2016, initially appeared to be trying to calm the situation before becoming embroiled in the scuffle himself and was reportedly hurt in the process. The former president has since declined to comment on the events.

  • On-pitch tension boils over in dramatic finish

The off-field clash mirrored the high tension on the pitch, which culminated in a dramatic finale. Espanyol were handed a lifeline deep into stoppage time when they were awarded a 97th-minute penalty after a VAR review. However, captain Javi Puado saw his spot-kick saved by Real Betis goalkeeper and former Espanyol player Pau Lopez, condemning the home side to a frustrating defeat. The atmosphere was further charged by provocative gestures from López towards the home fans.

  • Defeat leaves Espanyol mid-table

The 2-1 loss, with Pol Lozano's early goal cancelled out by second-half strikes from Cucho Hernández and Abde Ezzalzouli, was a bitter pill to swallow for Espanyol after coming so close to salvaging a point. The result sees the Catalan club drop to ninth in the La Liga standings, with 12 points from their opening eight fixtures. They have now lost two of their last three league games.
