Roy Keane was right! Luke Shaw accepts ‘getting away with murder’ criticism from outspoken former Man Utd captain after enduring injury nightmare

Luke Shaw has admitted that Roy Keane’s fierce criticism of his performance in the Manchester derby was justified, even if it "hurt" to hear. The Manchester United defender was called out for "getting away with murder" by the outspoken ex-captain, but has vowed to show more consistency after bouncing back with a strong display against Chelsea.

Shaw criticised by Keane for Man City display

Shaw was heavily criticised after United’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, where he was at fault for two goals. Keane slammed his display and pointed to his long history of injuries since joining the club in 2014. The left-back, however, responded with a much-improved performance in the Red Devils' 2-1 win over Chelsea, where he set up Casemiro’s decisive goal.

“I think sometimes you just have to take it on the chin,” Shaw said. “He's got a lot of experience. He was one of the best captains ever for Man United. Of course it hurts. I think criticism is part of being a football player. I listen to it. But for me, I think he was right. I think that last week, I wasn't at my level at all. I don't need Roy Keane to tell me. I think after the game, I knew that. I knew that, but of course it hurts.

“I'm not getting any younger now and I need to be consistent. I've had a lot of ups and downs, but for me now, it's about keeping that consistency at a high level. I know I can do that. The most important thing is knowing how good I can be. The manager knows that. I think the managers who I played with in the past know that. I'm always in the team and I'm always playing, so there must be something that the managers believe in.

“Last week hurt me a lot, because that's not my level. And I think the criticism is what people understand. But like I said, I take it on the chin and listen to it and move on.”

Shaw's injury-disrupted Man Utd career

Shaw’s words highlight his determination to avoid slipping into old habits and prove his worth to United boss Ruben Amorim. Injuries have disrupted much of his Manchester United career, but the full-back is currently enjoying a run of starts in a new role at centre-back. With United struggling for consistency, Shaw’s leadership and reliability could be vital in the weeks ahead.

Cricket Association of Nepal decides not to renew coach Monty Desai's contract

Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has decided not to renew the contract with the head coach of the men’s team, Monty Desai. He recently completed his two-year tenure and a CAN spokesperson said “it was not a sudden decision,” but a “mutual agreement”.”Head coach of the men’s national cricket team Shri Mrugang Jagdish Desai ‘Monty Desai’ was appointed with a tenure of two-year and the agreement has come to an end which we all are well aware of,” CAN spokesperson Chhumbi Lama said in a release. “Also, it is hereby informed that the Cricket Association of Nepal has decided not to renew the contract.”It was not a sudden decision. A board meeting held earlier had decided not to offer him a contract extension. There is no reason to think negatively of him, the decision was more of a mutual agreement.”

Under Desai, Nepal had recently whitewashed USA 3-0 in T20Is a few months after their second appearance in the T20 World Cup, in June 2024 in the USA, where they were winless from three games. At the start of 2024, Nepal had also blanked Canada 3-0 in an ODI series at home. Before the ODI World Cup in 2023, Nepal also made their ODI Asia Cup debut but returned home without winning a match. In the ongoing ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup League 2, Nepal are languishing at the second place from bottom with just two wins from 11 games in the eight-team tournament. A top-four finish in League 2 leads to automatic qualification for the ODI World Cup Qualifier.Desai had earlier also worked with Afghanistan, West Indies and a couple of IPL teams in different coaching capacities.

Knight to meet exiled Afghanistan women players during second Ashes ODI

“It’s a complex situation with what’s going on but the biggest positive can be that group of women being talked about,” the England captain said

Valkerie Baynes11-Jan-2025Heather Knight has urged the cricket community to lend its voice to the Afghanistan women’s team amid concerns that the group had been largely “forgotten” until a row broke out last week over the England men’s team playing Afghanistan at the Champions Trophy.England are due to play Afghanistan in Lahore on February 26 in their second match of the tournament and the ECB has faced calls from UK politicians to consider boycotting the match. UK prime minister Keir Starmer and ECB chief executive Richard Gould have called upon the ICC to show leadership on the issue.Women’s cricket in Afghanistan has effectively been outlawed since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. Knight: 'Scarred' Australia will come out 'really hard'

Some 22 women contracted by the Afghanistan Cricket Board before the Taliban took control fled to Australia and are now based in Melbourne and Canberra. A number of them will play for an Afghanistan Women’s XI against a Cricket Without Borders XI in a T20 match at Melbourne’s Junction Oval on January 30, the same day England and Australia begin their Women’s Ashes day-night Test at the MCG.Knight, England Women’s captain, plans to meet a number of exiled players, who are now based in Melbourne, when they attend the second Ashes ODI at Junction Oval on Tuesday.”I think it’s a really good thing that people are talking about it and it’s been in the news again because honestly, I think it’s been forgotten a lot which is a really bad thing,” Knight said. “Obviously, it’s a really complex situation with what’s going on but I think the biggest positive can be that group of women being talked about.”They’re playing a game at Junction the first day of our Test match so I’d love to see that broadcast far and wide. Let’s get that voice out there that those women are playing cricket, which is a really cool thing. I think that could be a really positive message from a pretty heartbreaking situation going on in their home country.”

UP Warriorz seek change in fortunes against solid Capitals

M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, 7:30pm ISTWhat to expect: Warriorz searching for first winUP Warriorz are yet to find their feet and will hope a change of venue brings a change in fortune, heading into the first reverse fixture of this season. They are also the only team without a win in WPL 2025. Under new captain Deepti Sharma, they haven’t been able to lock their XIs or their batting line-up. While there has been some individual flashes of brilliance – such as Kiran Navgire’s blazing fifty, Chinelle Henry’s death-over hitting and Sophie Ecclestone’s economical spells – Warriorz have not fired as a unit. They do not have a strike bowler (Saima Thakor was dropped after one game). Misfields and dropped catches have also hurt. The likes of Grace Harris and Tahlia McGrath have also not fired in the middle order. On the other hand, Capitals have won two out of three matches and seem like a settled unit with most boxes ticked. Their middle order consisting of Annabel Sutherland and Marizanne Kapp has stepped up, their captain Meg Lanning has found her rhythm with a fifty against Warriorz in the last game and their pace attack has collectively taken 11 wickets in three matches.Team news and likely XIsCapitals are unlikely to change their winning combination which means they might still prefer Niki Prasad’s lower-order batting over Radha Yadav’s left-arm spin.Delhi Capitals: 1 Meg Lanning (capt), 2 Shafali Verma, 3 Jemimah Rodrigues, 4 Annabel Sutherland, 5 Marizanne Kapp, 6 Jess Jonassen, 7 Sarah Bryce (wk), 8 Niki Prasad, 9 Shikha Pandey, 10 Arundhati Reddy, 11 Minnu ManiTahlia McGrath has had scores of 0 and 1 in the two matches and had an average outing with the ball too, picking up one wicket for 47 runs in 6.5 overs. Warriorz might bring in allrounder Chamari Athapaththu for the Bengaluru leg before she joins the Sri Lanka squad on a white-ball tour of New Zealand to bolster their batting.UP Warriorz (likely): 1 Kiran Navgire, 2 Chamari Athapaththu, 3 Vrinda Dinesh, 4 Uma Chetry (wk), 5 Deepti Sharma (capt), 6 Tahlia McGrath/Grace Harris, 7 Shweta Sehrawat, 8 Chinelle Henry, 9 Sophie Ecclestone, 10 Rajeshwari Gayakwad, 11 Kranti GoudCan Shafali Verma make a big score in Bengaluru?•WPL

Players to watch: Shafali Verma and Sophie EcclestoneShafali Verma smashed two half-centuries in four attempts at an impressive strike rate of 140.6 in the Bengaluru leg of WPL last year. Having hit 43, 0, 26 so far this edition, Shafali might be keen on converting her starts and making a big score at the venue again.Sophie Ecclestone has accounted for three of the seven wickets taken by Warriorz so far and has looked most threatening in the bowling attack. She has an economy of 5.87, and her spell in the powerplay will be crucial for Warriorz to make early inroads. Against Gujarat Giants, she had figures of 2-0-6-1 in the powerplay, but she was given only one over against Capitals where she leaked eight runs.Key stats Capitals are the second-best bowling unit in the death overs (17-20) in WPL 2025 so far, having conceded 8.53 runs an over.Ecclestone and Deepti are the only Warriorz bowlers to have bowled their full quota of four overs each in both their games. Navgire’s 24-ball fifty against Capitals was the joint fastest by a Warriorz batter in WPL.

Isak can do the one thing for Liverpool that Haaland never did at Man City

Alexander Isak is finally a Liverpool player. That’s the headline. That’s the saga of the summer and that may well be the deal that commences not only more Anfield glory in the current campaign, but for years to come.

The Reds have been accused of not doing enough in the transfer window in the past. They welcomed a new manager in Arne Slot this time last summer and the only immediate arrival proved to be Federico Chiesa as doubts arrived over Richard Hughes’ ability to get the job done. One year on, those doubts are laughable.

The Reds are in a better place than ever to repeat the dominance that Anfield has been unfortunate enough to watch elsewhere in the Premier League era. But, it must be said, they still need to find a way to make sure all their new pieces connect to form another title-winning machine, especially Isak and Hugo Ekitike.

The Haaland mistake that Liverpool must avoid

On paper, it is the ultimate position of luxury to have two of the world’s best strikers at your disposal. Alas, things on the pitch are slightly different.

Unless managers are willing to sacrifice their systems and midfield numbers to have two strikers lead the line together, there’s a high chance that one high-level forward will have to settle for a place on the bench or an unfamiliar role. And all it takes is one look at Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez to realise how that problem ends.

julian-alvarez-manchester-city-tottenham-hotspur-academy-postecoglou-mikey-moore

The Citizens had the world at their feet for four straight years in the Premier League, with Haaland breaking record after record along the way. Left to watch on, however, was the talented Alvarez. In an ideal world, Pep Guardiola would have found a way for them to click together on the pitch, but it just did not come.

The duo combined for just eight goals in 63 games and Alvarez’s compromise ultimately proved to be untenable as he departed to Atletico Madrid, becoming one of Europe’s most impressive players. It should be seen as one of Guardiola’s biggest regrets, given how they’ve struggled without the forward.

Whilst much of last season’s struggles will be put down to Rodri’s injury, and others that followed, there’s no denying that City became over-reliant on Haaland for goals. The Norwegian did his job – scoring 34 goals in all competitions – but this time there was no Alvarez to swoop in when City’s star suffered a rare off day.

Had Guardiola compromised to find a place for Alvarez, things could have been different for Man City last season. Instead, it was Diego Simeone who benefitted from handing the Argentine 30 starts in La Liga.

It’s not a problem that is going away anytime soon for City, either. This time, it’s Omar Marmoush missing out. The Egyptian arrived in January and handed City an instant attacking boost – scoring seven goals in 16 Premier League games – yet has already found himself pushed out to the left-hand side this season and didn’t start at all against Wolves.

Man City have inadvertently handed Liverpool the exact blueprint to avoid if they want to see both Ekitike and Isak thrive. Now, it’s down to Slot to keep both strikers happy.

How Liverpool could line-up with Isak & Ekitike

Will Slot change his system? Will Ekitike be left to settle for a place on the bench? Or will one find themselves out wide? Those are the questions that only Liverpool can truly answer after the international break, but they’ve certainly got options to ensure that both players enjoy the game time that they deserve.

The easiest way here is to start Ekitike out wide. Unlike Alvarez, the Frenchman has featured in that role before arriving in the Premier League and is arguably a similar profile to Liverpool’s current left-winger Cody Gakpo. Both are towering, physical figures who look to cut inside from the left using their skill and strength.

The Gakpo mould is one that Ekitike should follow if he wants to enjoy his best form from that side. The Dutchman started his Liverpool career as a No.9, before Slot arrived and moved him to the left of the front three. Since then, he has thrived.

Nothing has to be permanent, either. Isak’s injury history suggests that having a player like Ekitike available will prove to make all the difference for the Reds. In one move, Slot would be losing a world-class striker and replacing him with someone who has already stolen the headlines in a Liverpool shirt.

So, although Haaland and Alvarez’s failure should act as a firm warning, there is a way for Liverpool to march towards a successful title defence whilst enjoying both of their big-money strikers.

'In a position he doesn't want to be!' – Ruben Amorim destroyed by Micah Richards over Man Utd tactics in Brentford defeat

Ruben Amorim came under fire for his tactical decisions at Brentford on Saturday as Match of the Day's Micah Richards slammed the Manchester United boss for the number of tactical tweaks he made in the second half. Richards detailed how Amorim repeatedly changed personnel without altering the formation, meaning some players played in several different positions within one half. The Red Devils ultimately went down to a 3-1 defeat, as Amorim's substitutes would make little difference.

  • Amorim's confusing tactics as Man United lose again

Speaking on Match of the Day, Richards explained how each of Amorim’s five substitutions led to a tactical re-jig, with players changing positions after sometimes just a matter of a few minutes. The former Manchester City defender explained how some players may have been left confused at what Amorim expected them to do in an often-unfamiliar role, as the Red Devils chased the game.

Ultimately, make-shift wing-back Bryan Mbeumo was partially at fault as his former club Brentford broke forward to score a third goal deep in stoppage time. But Richards piled blame on his manager rather than Mbeumo, who had only been playing in the position since the 81st minute following the introductions of Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee, both of whom took short turns in playing in the right-forward role.

The lack of positional continuity reflects the stubbornness of Amorim when it comes to his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, believes Richards, as the Portuguese did not shift from that formation at any stage in the game.

Amorim may find his days numbered at Old Trafford as dire run continues

The defeat ensured that Man United continued a run of never having won two consecutive Premier League games under Amorim. Just 34 points have been collected from 33 league games under the head coach, who has come under increased scrutiny amidst reports that a three-man shortlist has been drawn up for who should be his successor at Old Trafford. Former England manager Gareth Southgate might be an option, with Joe Cole deeming him the “perfect” man for the role.

Victory against Cole’s former employers Chelsea last weekend represented a step forward, but subsequent defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium has placed even more emphasis on the fact that United scored both their goals against the 10 men of the Blues. Against an inspired Brentford side – who were in 17th place heading into the match but now find themselves ahead of the Red Devils on goal difference – Amorim’s side came unstuck, and the Portuguese did not have the tactical ability to change the game.

Amorim looked a forlorn figure on the touchline, head in hands late on as he began to process yet another defeat. The longer that he keeps playing important players out of position and expecting them to do unfamiliar roles, the longer criticism such as that of Richards' will continue to come.

  • Richards slams Amorim for tactical decisions

Richards said: “[Amorim] has not got the personnel to play how he wants to play. I just want to have a look at how they started. Mainoo and Yoro come on for Maguire and Ugarte on 66 minutes, De Ligt has gone from right to centre, and Mainoo has come on in midfield.

“Now [81st minute], De Ligt’s in the middle, Yoro has gone all the way to the other side. Dalot’s gone into the three at the back, Mbeumo has gone into wing-back and Mount has gone into No.10. Four minutes later, Zirkzee comes on for Dorgu, Mount goes into wing-back and Kirkzee goes into No.10.

“I know as players, we are supposed to be adaptable and flexible. But how are you supposed to adapt to a situation when you’re changing it constantly? And sticking to the same formation. All he had to do was go into a 4-3-3.

“For the goal which they conceded last, it was because Mbeumo is in a position where he doesn’t want to be! Yes, he has played wing-back at Brentford before, but he’s not a defensive player. You need him forward, and all these changes constantly are making it hard for the players to adapt to what he wants to because of so many changes.”

Which will change first – formation or manager?

Amorim has stuck up for his formation time and again whenever he has been questioned during his time at Old Trafford. He has even joked that the manager will change before the formation. Unless things on the pitch begin to change soon, that may ultimately become the case.

Cool Kuhnemann moves on from bowling action saga

Matthew Kuhnemann insists he’s put interrogation of his action firmly behind him as he targets a Test tour of the West Indies mid-year.The left-arm spinner was cleared to continue bowling by the ICC in late February after being reported for a suspect action following Australia’s away triumph over Sri Lanka.Kuhnemann was temporarily suspended from bowling and had a 10-day wait for results after being put through testing by cricket’s governing body.Related

The 28-year-old, who spoke to media on Friday for the first time since the incident, said he was always confident his action would be given the green light. So much so, he used the 10 days to spend some time on the Gold Coast.”It was actually great to have a bit of downtime with my family,” he said. “[The wait] wasn’t as nerve wracking as people may have thought.”When it first happened there was definitely some shock [and] I was very grateful for the support Cricket Australia and Cricket Tasmania provided.”[But I’ve played] over 100 professional games and had never been questioned … I was always confident that I would be fine.”I’ve had a couple of weeks to sit back and reflect on everything now and move on.”Had tests deemed Kuhnemann extended his elbow by more than 15 degrees, he would have been banned from bowling until he could prove he had remedied the situation.Kuhnemann was Australia’s highest wicket taker in the two-Test series against Sri Lanka with 16 scalps at an average of 17.18. He played through pain after breaking his right thumb in the Big Bash League in January.Kuhnemann said the ICC tests, thumb injury and battles securing a spot for previous state side Queensland had built his resilience.”It is the life of a professional sportsman these days, people might doubt you and whatnot but it’s how you take the doubt and turn it into a positive,” he said. “I’ve never been more confident in my ability as a cricketer.”Over in Sri Lanka that was probably the best time of my career, the ball was coming out beautifully.”Kuhnemann will be hoping to help last-placed Tasmania to a win when they host New South Wales in a day-night fixture in the final Sheffield Shield round starting Saturday. The next goal is a potential stint in England with Durham and a trip to the Caribbean with Australia, who play West Indies in a three-Test series beginning June.”I’ve never been to the West Indies … but it can take some spin,” Kuhnemann said. “If the opportunity comes, I’d love to go over there and play.”

Arteta shares what he's "already" seeing from Gyokeres behind-the-scenes at Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has praised Viktor Gyokeres for what he’s “already” doing behind-the-scenes, as the Swede gears up to face-off against his former boss, Ruben Amorim, at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Gyokeres is poised for his highly-anticipated Premier League debut when the north Londoners travel to Man United for their opening top flight game of the 2025/2026 season – a match where former top Arsenal target, Benjamin Sesko, will likely also be making his first competitive appearance for the Red Devils.

Gyokeres

Arsenal attempted to sign Sesko last summer and in January, but that is all ancient history now, with Gyokeres coming to N5 in the Slovenian’s stead after two years of free-scoring for Sporting CP in Portugal.

The 27-year-old joined Arteta’s side in a deal worth up to £64 million, including potential add-ons, whilst putting pen to paper on a five-year contract and officially ending Arsenal’s long hunt for a prolific number nine.

Gyokeres now dons the number 14 shirt, once worn by Gunners legend Thierry Henry (no pressure!), and Arsenal supporters were treated to glimpses of his quality during pre-season.

The ex-Coventry City star scored a thumping header in their 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao in the Emirates Cup last weekend, attacking the ball with gusto after a great run into the box, and perhaps giving Arteta a small taste of what’s to come.

Gyokeres has been tipped as a potentially game-changing signing in Arsenal’s quest to end their two-decade-long wait for a Premier League title, and nothing Arteta has witnessed so far suggests otherwise.

Mikel Arteta shares what Viktor Gyokeres is "already" doing at Arsenal

In an interview with Sky Sports, Arteta lavished praise on his new centre-forward.

The tactician revealed what Gyokeres has “already” been doing in his first few weeks behind-the-scenes at Arsenal – explaining the one thing that makes the Scandinavian so special.

Gyokeres bagged an incredible 97 goals in 102 appearances during his time at Sporting, helping Rui Borges’ side to their first domestic double in around 20 years last season, and Arteta will be praying for similar heroics at the Emirates.
