Leeds need more than they seem to be targeting

Leeds United don’t have long to prepare for their Premier League return.

With games starting up on September 12th, the Whites have just six weeks to assemble a squad ready to compete in the division, and as you can imagine they’ve already got a few ideas in mind.

While it’s good to see that the club already have a blueprint of what they want to do this summer, it seems as though their ideas aren’t as well thought out as they need to be.

Graham Smyth provided an update on what Leeds want to do this summer, and it doesn’t look to be enough.

What’s been said then?

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist was asked on Twitter what Leeds want to bring in this summer.

“As you’d expect, competition/back-up for Bamford, the same for Hernandez, at least one CB, another midfielder. If Kiko Casilla goes (still an if) then another keeper will have to come in.” He replied.

Not enough

Surely United can see that this won’t be enough to steer them clear of a relegation battle.

Patrick Bamford has had trouble converting his chances all season and his record in the Premier League speaks for itself, netting just once in 27 outings in the top-flight.

United need a Bamford replacement rather than a backup, and unfortunately, the same has to be said about Pablo Hernandez.

Now, nobody is claiming Hernandez isn’t a class player, he’s won Leeds’ Player of the Year award three times in a row, but he’ll be turning 36 next season, and he didn’t exactly light up the Premier League last time he was there with Swansea, hitting just five goals in 57 appearances.

The Kiko Casilla situation is obviously complicated with the racial abuse incident, with fans calling for him to be sacked in the past, but even if United look past that, he’s not good enough for the top-flight, making numerous errors against the likes of Wigan, Nottingham Forest and Brentford this term.

Of course, Leeds also have Illan Meslier as a goalkeeping option, but hanging your hopes on a man with just 10 Championship appearances to his name is risky to say the least.

Crystal Palace: Alessandro Tripaldelli may pose a threat to Patrick van Aanholt

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Tutto Mercato Web, Crystal Palace have sent scouts to watch Sassuolo left-back Alessandro Tripaldelli in action, while Manchester United and Southampton are also keeping tabs on the youngster.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Eagles are reportedly eyeing up the 20-year-old full-back who has quite a lot of admirers, despite making just two Serie A appearances this season.

Tripaldelli is on the radar of Sassuolo’s fellow Italian sides Fiorentina, Atalanta and Bologna, while Spanish outfits Levante and Valencia are also monitoring the youngster.

Sassuolo’s No.33 helped the Italy U20 side to fourth place at the U20 World Cup back in the summer, and he must certainly have something about him if he is being watched by sides with the pedigree of Valencia and Manchester United.

Tutto Mercato Web describe the young Italian as being “suitable for a British championship” while also mentioning his pace as a key asset of his.

Potential threat to Patrick van Aanholt

Now, while it would be far-fetched to state that a 20-year-old will arrive in England and immediately dislodge a first-teamer from his spot, context must be applied to Crystal Palace and Patrick van Aanholt’s situation if Tripaldelli did end up in south London.

[ad_pod ]

Firstly, the Eagles have just one senior left-back at the club in the shape of van Aanholt, so depth is definitely required in that area – Roy Hodgson was forced to play midfielder Jairo Riedewald there in the Carabao Cup earlier this term, something that the former England boss later apologised for.

Secondly, his poor performances must be mentioned.

The Dutchman is a liability for Palace from a defensive aspect – while he may score some important goals, he is caught out at the back far too often by opposition attackers.

His performance against Leicester a few weeks ago drew anger from some Palace fans on Twitter, a game in which his poor attempt to clear the ball led to the Foxes’ opener.

In that respect, if Palace managed to beat some big clubs to the highly-rated young left-back and he arrived at Selhurst Park, van Aanholt’s place may be under threat.

West Brom rank amongst the elite for providing England national team players

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

West Bromwich Albion may currently be competing in the English second tier, but that hasn’t stopped them from ranking amongst the elite on one particular spectrum.

Slaven Bilic’s side are attempting to return to the promised land of the Premier League this season, and they appear to be right on track as they sit top of the table going into the third international break of the season.

Despite enduring a second year away from the glamour the top-flight can bring, the club are still one of the most efficient providers of talent for the England national team.

Albion rank tenth from a total of 143 clubs, both domestically and abroad, that have ever supplied the Three Lions.

Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool sit top with 78 and 74 apiece with the Baggies seeing 44 players earn a call-up.

This should offer up serious encouragement going forward as it goes to show that the Hawthorns can be a place where British talent can thrive, which is in no doubt aided by the phenomenal academy setup at the club.

West Brom are renowned for their development squads, which has seen the likes of Rekeem Harper, Kyle Edwards, and Nathan Ferguson all breakthrough into the first team in recent years.

These players have also started to gain international recognition, meaning one day they could go on to add to that total of 44, especially if the Baggies can win promotion this campaign.

The exploits of Ferguson (England U20s), Edwards (U20s) and Grady Diangana (U21s) should be the perfect motivation for those in the academy ranks to remain at the club while those from further afield that may get the opportunity to join the club can see that it may eventually pay dividends.

Gareth Barry has made the most England caps of any player in this West Brom side with 53 appearances.

Liverpool fans loved Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain showing against Genk

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was on the scoresheet as Liverpool recorded a 2-1 win over Genk in Tuesday night’s Champions League clash at Anfield.

The Englishman’s strike early in the second period actually proved to be the winner after Mbwana Samatta had cancelled out an early goal from Georginio Wijnaldum.

A number of Liverpool fans have already called for head coach Jurgen Klopp to select Oxlade-Chamberlain from the start against Manchester City this weekend.

And his performance against Genk is sure to have made a positive impression on his manager.

Indeed, according to WhoScored, as well as his goal, the former Arsenal ace completed three dribbles, had two shots and boasted a pass success rate of 86%.

Liverpool were far from at their best on Tuesday night.

However, another hugely important three points were secured, and the club’s supporters were delighted with Oxlade-Chamberlain’s performance.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Tottenham fans don’t want Jan Vertonghen to start against Liverpool

Loads of Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter don’t want defender Jan Vertonghen to start when they travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on Sunday.

Spurs go into the clash with the Premier League leaders on the back of a much-needed 5-0 win against Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League, which followed on from a disappointing draw at home to Watford and heavy defeats against Brighton and Hove Albion and Bayern Munich.

Vertonghen started in all three of those as well as against the Serbian club in midweek, but it appears as though some supporters of the north London haven’t been impressed with what they’ve seen from the Belgium international.

The 32-year-old was certainly fortunate not to give a penalty away against the Hornets following his coming together with Gerard Deulofeu, while he also relied on Ben Davies to bail him out on a couple of occasions on Tuesday.

Coming up against a frontline containing Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino is pretty daunting even for the most experienced players, and Tottenham fans are clearly concerned.

While one individual simply said “Mane will destroy him”, another said how he “has been off the pace”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Recent revival of Premier League full-backs proves they are worth the spotlight

As Jamie Carragher so eloquently exclaimed on an edition of Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, “no-one wants to grow up and be a Gary Neville”. The former Liverpool man’s comical dig at his fellow pundit struck a chord – it may have been a bit of banter, but it provided a searingly honest insight into how we perceive the full-back position.

Scoring long-range screamers or making a crunching last-ditch tackle is the stuff of dreams. Not hurtling yourself forwards for 70 yards to overlap the winger, only for them cut inside and smash it into Row Z. It’s certainly not, traditionally speaking, the most glamorous of roles football has to offer.

But in recent years in the Premier League, it has become an increasingly important position, and some of the top-flight’s biggest sides have really exploited its growing potential. Manchester City and Liverpool have been the key pioneers in shining a new light on full-backs, and that has undoubtedly been shown by the manner of their spending in the transfer market, and their influence on the pitch.

As more and more teams opt for this more modern approach of having wingers operate as inside forwards – think Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane at Anfield, or Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva at the Etihad – having full-backs who can help maintain the width is invaluable. In attacking phases of play, they can hug the by-line in the final third of the pitch, and either offer a crossing opportunity from deep, or a dangerous run in behind the defence.

Last year, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold showed the world just how effective they can be going forward despite being classed as ‘defenders’. The former racked up 13 assists across all competitions (11 of them coming just in the Premier League), and the latter went that little bit further with 16 assists in total (12 of them in the top-flight).

After one particularly impressive outing last season against Waftord, in which Alexander-Arnold registered a hat-trick of assists in a 5-0 win, Jurgen Klopp remarked: “It’s important. That’s modern football. If you ask a young boy ‘What’s your favourite position?’ I don’t think a lot of boys will say ‘I want to be a full-back!’ But football has changed. They became much more important.”

But whilst Liverpool have built their attacking charge with full-backs, Pep Guardiola at City has had a different use for them – namely as players with more central positions. The likes of Kyle Walker and Fabian Delph in previous campaigns have been seen to occupy spaces just in front of their two centre-backs, before firing the ball out wide to the wingers hugging the touch-line.

The Etihad side’s boss has always been keen to dominate the ball, and overloading the midfield areas with another of couple of players from more unorthodox positions really boggles the mind of the opposition.

Such is their importance to his team, that it is no surprise to see the Manchester outfit feature prominently in the list of most expensive full-backs in Premier League history. For all of the talk about City’s emphasis on scoring goals and having world-class attackers, they’ve spent serious sums on bolstering their options at full back.

The purchase of Joao Cancelo earlier in the summer really underlined how valuable Guardiola sees the unfancied position. Despite having Kyle Walker as a bona-fide first-team star, the Spaniard felt compelled to bring in a £60m man to compete for the one spot. Having technically proficient full-backs who can slot into central midfield gives the City manager another string to his tactical bow.

Gone are the days of a Nigel Winterburn or a Denis Irwin, intent on protecting the back-four and keeping clean sheets. Now they’re as much a part of the attacking game-plan as the number nines. So when this new generation of kids grow up, they may not be dreaming of becoming the next Neville. But there will be some dreaming of becoming the new Alexander-Arnold or Benjamin Mendy.

And doesn’t that just say it all?

Arsenal tipped to make move for Spurs star Jan Vertonghen

Darren Bent has suggested that Arsenal could try to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen in the summer, per Football Insider.

What’s he said?

The Belgium international’s current contract expires at the end of the season.

Thus, he could be available on a free transfer if he fails to agree new terms with Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

And Bent, who played for Spurs between 2007 and 2009, is concerned that the Gunners could swoop, as they famously did for Sol Campbell in 2001, when the ex-England defender moved across north London on a free.

He said: “Jan Vertonghen, playing at the centre of the defence, are there too many more that are going to be better than him? If you’re going to take him on a free, Arsenal could do with him.

“If he’s on a free don’t be surprised if they’re in the mix for him as well. I think it’s a situation they need to address but at the same time I wouldn’t want to see these players walk away for nothing.

“It’s a difficult one, they’re down to a free, they’re obviously not going to sign new contracts so what do you do?”

Arsenal could do a lot worse

This makes some sense bearing in mind Vertonghen’s contract situation.

Arsenal currently have the likes of Shkodran Mustafi and David Luiz in their defence and one has to believe that Vertonghen would be a major upgrade on that.

After all, this is a player who has twice made it into the Premier League Team of the Year and made last term’s Champions League squad of the season.

He may be 32 – and Spurs may have started the season poorly with 13 goals conceded already – but he’s nearing 300 appearances for the club and remains perhaps their most assured centre-back, someone who can defend resolutely but also play out of the backline.

The Gunners could certainly use his experience and reliability at the heart of their defence, acquiring it while directly weakening their local and key divisional rivals, but it remains to be seen whether or not Vertonghen would be willing to become a pariah for Spurs fans.

If he is, Arsenal could grab themselves a massive bargain. They should at least ask the question.

Man Utd fans slam Axel Tuanzebe after costly mistake against Arsenal

Heading into the clash against Arsenal, Axel Tuanzebe would probably have been readying himself for a place on the bench for Manchester United.

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have been Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-choice pair for the Premier League this season, and so a route into the team for the 21-year-old was difficult to see.

However, Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s late withdrawal meant Tuanzebe was given the chance to play, but in an unfamiliar role at left-back, with Ashley Young switching to the right.

The England U21 international came up against Arsenal’s Nicolas Pepe, and by and large, kept the Ivorian in check.

The United academy product made three interceptions, one tackle and one clearance over the course of the game in an impressive showing, but let himself down with a huge error.

His mistake in the second-half of the contest resulted in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scoring the equaliser for the visitors, and United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their frustrations with the defender.

Many supporters of the Manchester side slammed the 6 foot 1 man for making such a game-defining error, and questioned why Solskjaer would pick him at left-back over Marcos Rojo.

Some fans even suggested Tuanzebe isn’t ready to play at the highest level, with one supporter in particular insisting he should simply go back to the academy.
