Raphinha tipped to shine next season

Former Leeds United defender Danny Mills believes that Raphinha can get even better for the Whites, having shone in his first season at the club.

The Lowdown: Superb first season

The Brazilian joined Leeds from Rennes last autumn and has undoubtedly been one of the Whites’ key performers this season. Raphinha has scored six goals and registered eight assists in the Premier League in 2020/21, catching the eye with his silky touch and dribbling ability.

The Latest: Raphinha tipped to get even better

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills claimed that the 24-year-old – who he dubbed a “class player” – could now go up another gear for the Whites next season. He said:

“He’s had his first season in the Premier League now it’s about building that robustness to play at that level week in, week out. The experience of this season will stand him in good stead for next year.

“We’ve talked about it many times, Bielsa almost works his teams to death at times. They are incredibly fit but it does mean, from time to time, new players who aren’t as used to it are going to break down and are going to pick up little injuries.

“After a season you’d expect those little bumps in the road to be ironed out and he can have a real good tilt at it next season.”

The Verdict: Vital figure for Leeds

As Mills has hinted, Raphinha may potentially have dipped a little in recent times, with a relentless season taking its toll as he has now gone four matches without scoring, but he is a huge player for Leeds moving forward.

When foreign imports come to England, they can sometimes struggle to adapt to life in the Premier League. However, the Leeds winger has hit the ground running, with Tony Cascarino describing him as ‘incredible’.

His knowledge of the league should, as Mills said, “stand him in good stead” for next term, although he must avoid the footballing equivalent of a difficult second album, and hopefully he can continue to excel with his end product and all-round effectiveness.

West Ham eye Belotti raid

It’s no secret that West Ham United will likely have a striker atop their priorities this summer, but there’s one name which should sit above all…

What’s the word?

According to Torino Granata, the Irons are now the front-runners to clinch Torino talisman Andrea Belotti ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

It is claimed that AS Roma’s appointment of former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho over ex-Chelsea coach Maurizio Sarri has meant that the 27-year-old is now no longer likely to join their Serie A rivals, thus opening the door for West Ham to strike.

Belotti will enter the final year of his current contract next season, and despite being valued at £36m by Transfermarkt, the Italian could leave Turin for as little as €25m (£21.5m), according to Corriere dello Sport (via Manchester Evening News).

Proven at the top

The Hammers have been linked with some interesting names in recent months, ranging from Brentford beast Ivan Toney to Chelsea’s forgotten man Tammy Abraham. Both are expected to cost in excess of £35m, yet neither have delivered on the biggest stage, or at least consistently in the case of the latter.

David Moyes only has one senior striker at his disposal in the injury-prone Michail Antonio following the departure of Sebastien Haller in January, so one forward – at the very least – is desperately needed.

Belotti fits the bill perfectly. So far this season, the 32-cap Italy international has found the net 12 times from 31 appearances, meaning he has hit double figures in six straight Serie A campaigns, as per Transfermarkt. This is even more impressive in recent seasons as Torino have been battling with relegation.

Belotti has also impressed in Europe, where he bagged six goals from six games before being knocked out by eventual quarter-finalists Wolves in the qualifying rounds in 2019/20 – he still scored in both legs against them, too.

Former Irons loanee Joe Hart was at the Italian outfit prior to his move to the London Stadium and played with the 5 foot 11 goal machine and he was left blown away by the striker’s ability.

In an interview with Gianluca Di Marzio, he revealed: “Andrea is similar to all the great strikers, English and not. It’s hard to compare him to someone else because he’s special. He’s Belotti and that’s it. He has instinct for goals, personality and he’s a team player: he’s always focused on his team and plays hard to help it.”

Once likened to Gianluca Vialli, the Torino marksman is a perfect blend of pace, strength and ability. “He knows how to score goals in all ways – foot, head, acrobatics,” claimed former teammate Salvatore Aronica.

Belotti doesn’t just provide goals either, as he has been lauded for his leadership qualities, which is hardly a surprise given he is the skipper of Torino. Their president Urbano Cairo once dubbed him a “real captain.”

All of these qualities point towards Belotti being an outstanding option to try and secure, especially if he’s available for just £21.5m. As good as Toney and Abraham could be under Moyes, it is the Italian powerhouse who should be targeted given his proven scoring record at an elite level.

GSB must look to sanction this deal as their top priority, he could be the man to take them to the next level with a place in Europe next season firmly in sight.

Leeds must win race for Patrick van Aanholt

Leeds must win the race to sign Crystal Palace star Patrick van Aanholt in this summer transfer window amid reports linking him with a move elsewhere.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Marcelo Bielsa’s side have got their eye on signing the Dutchman on a free transfer when his contract expires this summer.

However, Football Insider now claim that Galatasaray have offered a contract to Van Aanholt as they look to beat the Whites to his signing, with the Turkish giants also the team who have supposedly agreed a deal to land Leeds’ Gjanni Alioski.

Premier League proven

Van Aanholt is battle-hardened in English football, having played 209 times in the Premier League, and would surely be more of a guarantee in terms of hitting the ground running at Elland Road.

His more attacking style of play as a left-back is also right up Bielsa’s wheelhouse, with Gus Poyet, his former manager at Sunderland, saying: “You need to be really on top of him for his defensive duties and maybe have people around who can help him to maintain the mentality you need to defend. He’s a very offensive full back. He has an explosive ability to go forward and help the team to create chances.

“I would say use him as much as you can on the offensive side, and convince him to help with his defensive duties. But that’s his character. It is what it is. We can’t change that and he can’t be a different player than he is.”

The £55,000-a-week earning Dutchman would be a shrewd signing for Leeds given his Premier League experience and the fact he would arrive as a free agent once his contract expires.

It’s a deal which Victor Orta and co should be all over.

Meanwhile, Leeds must surely rue letting this star leave…

AC Milan interested in Edouard

AC Milan have identified Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard as a possible centre-forward target, Italian outlet Tuttosport reports.

They claimed that the Rossoneri have decided to dip into the market amid the fitness struggles of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The legendary Swede has 483 career goals to his name, including 14 in as many Serie A games this season, but the 39-year-old is currently in the midst of his third injury lay-off of the campaign. Separate muscle injuries had already kept him out of action for a combined six weeks before an abductor tear at the end of February (via Transfermarkt).

Milan’s other forward options, Rafael Leao and Ante Rebic, have just 10 league goals between them this term.

Milan draw up striking shortlist

Meanwhile, Edouard has found the net 16 times in Scotland in the current campaign. Overall, the France under-21 international boasts an impressive record of 81 goals and 35 assists in 161 Celtic appearances (via Transfermarkt).

Milan do have other options in mind, according to Tuttosport. The alternatives are Fiorentina’s 21-year-old, 12-goal hitman Dusan Vlahovic and Torino’s Andrea Belotti, a seasoned Serie A goalscorer.

Transfer Tavern verdict

It’s no surprise to see Edouard attracting reported interest, and it seems inevitable that he’ll leave Celtic in the next year or two.

Earlier this month, Champions League-chasing Leicester were said to be intent on reuniting the striker with Brendan Rodgers (via Daily Mail). Edouard has one year left on his contract, so Celtic aren’t in a particularly strong position.

John Kennedy dismissed the Daily Mail’s suggestions that the 23-year-old would be allowed to leave for £15m, but you wonder whether an offer closer to £25m would tempt the Hoops, who could then reinvest in strengthening their squad.

In other news, Kris Commons has warned Celtic about allowing this midfielder to leave.

Rob Lee can’t see Moyes at Celtic

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Rob Lee, who made 18 appearances for West Ham, believes it is just David Moyes’ agent who will be putting his name in the hat for the Celtic to try and get him a better contract at the London Stadium.

Moyes has taken West Ham from relegation candidates last season to top four contenders this season as they currently sit fifth, just two points behind Chelsea in fourth.

However, it has been reported by GIVEMESPORT that Celtic are considering Moyes to be a strong candidate to take the job from the start of next season, and the longer his contract situation rumbles on at West Ham the stronger those rumours will grow as Celtic look to bounce back against Rangers next season.

Speaking on where the links have come from regarding the 57-year-old and what mistake the West Ham owners made last time around, Lee told FFC:

“No chance he’ll take the Celtic job. It’s probably just David Moyes’ agent trying to get a better contract for him at West Ham.

“Why would he leave West Ham? David Moyes has really done a good job of organising this team and he’s always been a good organiser of every team he’s managed and now he’s got players in the side that can score goals.”

Celtic’s interest in Moyes always looked a little farfetched given his success in London this term, but with no new contract agreed with the Irons the rumours may linger on for a while yet.

Ayew was poor in Swansea win vs Luton

Swansea earned a hard-fought three points in their push for promotion on Saturday, as they defeated Luton Town 1-0 in the early kick-off in the Championship.

Connor Hourihane’s early goal was enough to see off the Hatters, who had a number of chances to equalise but couldn’t find a way past Freddie Woodman in the Swans goal.

The result briefly put Steve Cooper’s side in the top-two of the Championship, before Watford’s 2-1 win at Cardiff saw them jump back above the Swans into the automatic spots.

Although it was an important result, some of the performances from Swansea players were below par on Saturday, with Andre Ayew, in particular, disappointing.

As per SofaScore, the experienced striker would earn a 6.4 rating for his display, which was the joint-lowest rating, with Korey Smith, of any Swansea player who started the game.

During his 90 minutes on the pitch, the former Marseille man would have 41 touches of the ball and would complete just 18 passes, which suggests that he was rarely involved, as he has averaged 27.3 passes per game in the Championship so far this season.

Perhaps most disappointingly, the Ghana international struggled to hold the ball up for Swansea in his role as a lone striker, with the Luton defenders, particularly Kai Naismith, having the better of him during the game.

Ayew would win just 4/14 ground duels and just 3/11 of his aerial duels during the game, resulting in an overall tally of 7/25 – which saw him register a disappointing success rate of just 28%.

Naismith meanwhile, would win 15/17 of his duels during the game and earned an impressive 8.3 rating for his display, which definitely suggests that he won the battle between himself and Ayew.

Despite being rarely involved, the 31-year-old striker would also lose possession on 16 occasions, suggesting that his link-up play was nowhere near his usual standards at Kenilworth Road.

The £3.6 million-rated forward was also successful with just 2/7 of his dribbles against Nathan Jones’ side, whilst he failed to register a single shot on target, so he is perhaps fortunate that Swansea were able to come away with a win, as it is clear that he was nowhere near his best against the Hatters as he let Cooper down with an anonymous display.

Predicted Tottenham Hotspur XI vs Palace

Tottenham Hotspur will be looking to build on their recent upturn in form with another three points against Crystal Palace on Sunday evening.

Jose Mourinho’s side have impressed in recent wins against Wolfsberger and Burnley, before picking up another hard-fought win and clean sheet in their game against Fulham earlier this week.

The top four is still a possibility for the North London club but they must win games like these if they are to be in with a chance of securing a strong finish in the Premier League this season.

Here’s how Football FanCast thinks Mourinho will line his side up at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium, with three changes from the side that started against Fulham…

Hugo Lloris unsurprisingly keeps his place in goal after recording back-t0-back clean sheets against Burnley and Fulham.

There are two changes in defence, as Mourinho once again rotates his full-backs, as Sergio Reguilon replaces Ben Davies at left-back, whilst Serge Aurier has recovered from his injury and is likely to come in for Matt Doherty.

The midfield duo of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Tanguy Ndombele stays the same after some impressive performances in recent games.

There is one change in attack, as despite playing a big part in the winning goal in midweek, Dele Alli drops to the bench in place of Lucas Moura, as after not starting in the Premier League for so long, Mourinho may not trust the Englishman to start consecutive games in such quick succession.

When the Portuguese manager first took over, he dubbed Alli “fantastic” for his performances and whilst he is starting to show glimpses of rediscovering that form, he is unlikely to play every game considering the number of options Spurs have in his position.

Harry Kane, Heung-Min Son and Gareth Bale complete the attack, and they will be hoping to show a similar level of understanding and potency in attack as they did in the 4-0 win against Burnley in their last home fixture.

And, in other news… Jose must unleash “aggressive” beast vs Palace; he can be the game-changer
