Neil Edwards back in training for Under-19 tour to Australia

There was good news for Somerset young cricketer Neil Edwards whose visit to Australia after Christmas with the England Under 19’s was put in jeopardy when he was diagnosed with glandular fever last month. The tall left handed opening bat who hails from Penzance made a good impression in his first team debut against West Indies A at Taunton, and has been taken onto the staff for next season.Thankfully Neil has made a good recovery and this morning he was back working in the office at the County Ground in Taunton. He told me: “I have been back to the doctor and he has given me the all clear to start training again. I have also been in touch with Paul Farbrace the England Under 19’s coach and the trip to Australia is now very much back on. Of course I am absolutely delighted and looking forward to it immensely.”Commenting on the situation Mr Anderson told me: “Neil Edwards has been declared fit to go on the Under 19 tour to Australia. This is great news and will give a lift to everyone especially the girls in the office where he is a popular member of the staff.”

Wolves fans react to Issa Diop link

Wolverhampton Wanderers are among the clubs ‘interested’ in West Ham United centre-back Issa Diop.

That’s according to journalist Ekrem Konur, who also names Crystal Palace and Southampton as interested parties.

In fact, he claims that Crystal Palace have already gone as far as tabling an ‘official offer’ for the Frenchman, only to see it rejected by the Hammers.

The lowdown on Wolves target Diop

Back in January, Diop was the subject of an enquiry from Champions League outfit Liverpool before they instead brought in Ozan Kabak on loan (via The Athletic).

Diop started 15 Premier League matches for West Ham last season, averaging 1.3 successful aerial duels, 1.1 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 1.2 blocks and 3.2 clearances (via WhoScored).

The 24-year-old has two years remaining on his contract at the London Stadium and is valued at £16.2million by Transfermarkt.

He’d be competing with the likes of Conor Coady, Willy Boly, Max Kilman and Romain Saiss for a starting spot under Bruno Lage.

Fan feed Talking Wolves relayed the news, and here’s what supporters made of it.

Hatfield: Villa will be confident about their Leon Bailey chances

Aston Villa will be confident about signing Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey this summer, journalist Luke Hatfield has told Football FanCast.

The MailOnline recently reported that the Midlands club have the 23-year-old firmly in their sights, with BILD reporting that the player’s father has confirmed talks between the two clubs.

Improving Villa’s attack has been a priority for manager Dean Smith in this transfer window, with the former Brentford boss signing Emiliano Buendia from Norwich City before making an unsuccessful move for Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe.

And now, with the Smith Rowe saga over, the Villa boss has moved on to Bailey as he looks to bolster his offensive options further.

For Hatfield, it is a deal he feels Villa will be confident about getting done. On the club’s pursuit of the player, the Express & Star journalist said:

“Villa will be very confident in themselves with any bid that they go in with. I don’t think there’s any bid that they put down where they think, ‘We’re not going to get this player.’

“I imagine they’re very confident with the bid which they’re going to try and put in. I don’t know whether they’ve put in a bid already, there’s some reports saying they have, some reports saying they’re considering one.

“But he’s clearly a player they like and they’ll be confident in trying to bring him to Villa Park.”

Villa fans will surely be delighted to hear the above because Bailey is a quality player and showed as much last season.

The Jamaica international had a very productive campaign, coming up with close to 30 goal contributions in all competitions for Leverkusen.

Under 16s vying with Middlesex for Seven Counties Championship

Hampshire Young Cricketers are vying with Middlesex for the Seven Counties Under-16 Championship title. The pair go into their final matches with Middlesex leading the table by eight points. But if the Crusaders slip up against Surrey at NPL Lensbury on August 27, Hampshire could snatch the title from their grasp – provided they beat Sussex in their final match at Burridge, starting on Monday.Hampshire boosted their prospects with a first innings win over Kent at Tunbridge Wells, where Basingstoke’s Mitchell Stokes grabbed 4-30 in 25 overs of off-spin.New Milton’s Neil Summerson (2-23), Rob Snell, Ricky Rawlins and Rob Palmer joined in the wicket taking as Kent were dismissed for 202.Alex Richardson (36) and Steve Williams (21) gave Hampshire a solid start but, after the team had slipped to 129-6, Tom Cledwyn (36) and Andover’s Rob Palmer (37) shouldered added responsibility. The game was back in the balance when both batsmen departed at 186, but Summerson (18) kept his cool to ease Hampshire to 234 all out – and a precious win.

Thorpe vows to repay selectors' faith

Graham Thorpe has spoken of his delight at his selection in England’s Ashes squad following his decision to take a complete break from cricket earlier this summer

Stephen Lamb10-Sep-2002Graham Thorpe has spoken of his delight at his selection in England’s Ashes squad following his decision to take a complete break from cricket earlier this summer.Thorpe hasn’t played since the first Test between England and India at Lord’s back in July, and plans to make his Surrey comeback in tomorrow’s championship match against Hampshire at The Rose Bowl.”I’m delighted to have been picked having not played for five or six weeks,” Thorpe said. “There was a lot of doubt as to whether I’d go and it’s up to me now to repay the faith the selectors have shown in me.”I feel the break has given me the chance to clear my mind and address the off-field issues which were there before. Everything is now more settled in my private life and I’m looking forward to playing cricket again.”I’m hoping to play for Surrey tomorrow and I’m looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. It will be nice to have a bat in my hand again and I know that I’m going to have to work hard in the run-up to the tour because Australia is a tough place to tour.”Durham fast bowler Steve Harmison is also thrilled by his selection alongside Glamorgan’s Simon Jones.”It’s everyone’s dream to play against Australia, and I’m no different to anyone else and I’m going out there to enjoy it,” Harmison said.”I got injured at a bad time and that didn’t help, but I was involved in four Test matches this summer and played in one that I really enjoyed and I thought I’d done well enough to be in with a shout of making the squad.”Australia will be tough. To be a great side you have to beat Australia and I think we can go there and give them a good game. I think this is the best chance we’ve had for a long time to beat them, with batters in form and firepower amongst the bowlers."Jones added: “It’s been very frustrating for me having this injury over the last couple of months and now I’m really pleased the selectors have shown faith in me – I’m going to be working hard over the next few weeks to make sure I’m fully fit.”I think the winter I spent with the Academy in Australia has prepared me well for what’s going to come and I know in my own mind what to expect. It’s going to be really hard work. They’re the best side in the world but I’m looking forward to it.”Essex wicket-keeper James Foster, who will go on the tour as understudy to Alec Stewart, was relieved to be selected after missing most of the summer with two successive injuries.”It has gone pretty badly to be honest. It has not been a summer cricket-wise because of injuries so this has been absolutely great news and a great relief. It was a tough one. I did have a lot of doubts but was delighted to hear the news today.”The way this year has gone I didn’t know what was going to happen. I have a lot to prove this winter. I was disappointed about getting injured but I am going to have to try to do my best as understudy to Alec and just be a professional on the tour.”Surrey fast bowler Alex Tudor admitted he was surprised at his omission, although he will still travel to Australia as part of the England academy.Tudor will still travel to Australia this winter, but only as part of the Academy side.”I am surprised and disappointed not to be included in the Ashes tour party,” Tudor said. “It is every player’s dream to tour Australia and I had hoped to retain my place in the England squad.”However, I am still only 24 and hope that if I continue to work hard on my game I can still fulfil my dream. I wish the team the best of luck and hope they can bring the Ashes back home.”

Everton manager update on Benitez

Many Everton fans have been left to slam a manager update involving Rafa Benitez.

Writing in his latest piece for The Times, Paul Joyce has shared that the Spaniard is expected to be formally offered the manager’s job by the Goodison Park faithful following the departure of Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid.

He has now had three rounds of talks with Farhad Moshiri and members of the Merseyside club hierarchy over the past week, having moved in front of former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo as the frontrunner for the vacancy.

The discussions have also been described as positive, as it looks increasingly like Benitez could be well be the man to lead the Toffees going into the 2021/22 season.

Of course, he used to manage and was so fondly remembered by Liverpool, given that he won the UEFA Champions League with them back in the 2004/05 term (Transfermarkt), and so it is not a surprise at all to see so many Evertonians opposed to the potential appointment.
