Journo makes new claim on Nketiah to CPFC

Crystal Palace are having a quiet transfer window so far, as Patrick Vieira’s side have enjoyed a comfortable start to their season, currently 11th in the Premier League, but with three weeks to go there is one player that has been repeatedly linked to signing for the side in January.

What’s the word?

Journalist, Pete O’Rourke, added new claims to the ongoing speculation surrounding the potential signing of Eddie Nketiah, confirming that other clubs are interested in the Gunners forward.

O’Rourke told GIVEMESPORT:

“There’s other clubs interested in Nketiah,” he began.

“The likes of Brighton have been mentioned but Crystal Palace have held a long-term interest in Nketiah. They tried to get him in the summer but it didn’t happen in the end.”

With Brighton speculated to be in hot pursuit of the 22-year-old too, Vieira will need to make a decision on whether he wants to sign the player or not, as he could be beaten to securing his signature by another Premier League club, especially now that he is in the final six months of his contract with Arsenal.

Fans will be buzzing

Nketiah would be a great addition to the youth revolution that Patrick Vieira has imposed since being appointed by the London club in summer last year, and has the potential to become a fantastic player if his current form is anything to go by.

As a result, fans will surely be elated to see another young player in Nketiah becoming part of the future that the Palace manager is already building, with many taking to social media to discuss the potential signing.

One fan Tweeted: “Palace need to bag Nketiah, imagine the front 4 of Nketiah, Olise, Eze and Gallagher.”

The Arsenal striker has not been in Mikel Arteta’s favour for too many Premier League starts, with just three appearances so far, but has been able to prove his worth and showcase his talents in the EFL Cup.

In that competition, he has scored five goals in three games, leading the Gunners to a semi final that is important for the club this season, as they can only compete in domestic competitions due to failing to qualify for European football for the first time since 1995.

Crystal Palace could lose one of their strikers this January, as Jean-Philippe Mateta is strongly linked to a move away from the club, ending his loan and joining Saint Etienne, and if this was the case, Vieira could swoop to secure the signing of Nketiah in the next few weeks to fill the hole that his current striker would leave.

ICL returnees, 26 Pakistan players register for IPL auction

Ninety-seven players, including 26 from Pakistan and several latterly with the ICL, have registered for the third IPL auction, which will be held on January 19. The list also includes four players from Associate countries – Rizwan Cheema and Khurram Chohan (Canada), Ryan ten Doeschate (Netherlands), Niall O’Brien (Ireland) – as well as former Zimbabwe nationals Murray Goodwin and Ray Price.Prominent among the players who were part of the unofficial ICL are Shane Bond, who recently retired from Test cricket, Damien Martyn, Chris Cairns, Saqlain Mushtaq and Justin Kemp. The Pakistanis – the current world Twenty20 champions – include Mohammed Aamer and Umar Akmal, and the list also includes the exciting West Indian Kieron Pollard.Merely registering, however, does not guarantee the player will be included in the auction list. The IPL will send the list of 97 names to the franchises who will then select those players they would like included in the auction. The selected players will be informed of their inclusion by January 5.The number of overseas players a franchise may have on its roster is capped at ten and at present it is unclear how many slots are available. In 2009, over 100 players registered for the auction out of which 50 went under the hammer to fill 17 available overseas slots. The IPL said it expected the number of places to be substantially lower this time. The list sets a “preliminary expected availability” date against each player’s name and, intriguingly, those from Australia and South Africa have been marked as free from the conclusion of their domestic competitions – the Sheffield Shield, in the case of Australian players, and the Standard Bank Pro20 series for South Africans. This suggests that the league has shifted from its earlier stated position, that players would have to put the IPL above their domestic tournaments and be available for the entire season. That decision, taken in November, said defaulting players would face penalties including termination of player contracts and a ban on future participation, although Lalit Modi, the league’s chairman, told Cricinfo that this would only happen in a worst-case scenario.Registered players

Everton fans shocked by Rafa Benitez claim

Lots of Everton fans have been left shocked over a claim which emerged from Rafael Benitez.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match at Brentford on Sunday afternoon, the Spaniard stated (via Phil Kirkbride): “We are doing much better with injuries now, compared to the past. Delph is available and training everyday. Gbamin was injured for two years, but is now available and training everyday.”

The claim on doing better with injuries is a little strange, given that the Toffees have as many as six players from the first team squad currently out injured at the moment, with three of those having an unknown return date (evertonfc.com).

Also, both Delph and Gbamin have a long history of injury problems since signing for the Merseyside club, so they could fall down injured again at any moment, despite being back in training.

Therefore, it is no surprise to see so many Evertonians left confused by the manager’s comments.

South Africa switches to 40-over domestic cricket

Cricket South Africa (CSA) has acted on its plan to tweak the limited-overs format by making trial changes to their domestic competition, including reducing the format to 40 overs each, allowing 12 players a side and allowing the batting side to pick Powerplays. This follows the England board’s decision to do away with their 50-over competition and retain the 40-over format to go with the first-class and Twenty20 championships. However while the teams can pick 12 players, only 11 can bat and field. The first Powerplay will extend up to 10 overs and the second for five and both must be taken before the 35th over. For one, four fielders will be allowed outside the ring, and for the other three. Also for rain delays overs will be deducted immediately, and matches will be played over a set period regardless of the weather. The existing 45-over MTN domestic championship will be replaced will the new format from October 28. Gerald Majola, CSA chief executive, said the changes would revolutionise cricket in South Africa. “CSA believes the new format will be a dynamic alternative to the dull periods that have crept into the 45-over version by providing added excitement and playing intensity,” Majola said. “This change is part of CSA’s vision of giving fans the excitement and action they want without losing any of the basic skills that are an integral part of the game.”At the same time, we will also be preparing our players for the 50-over international version if that does not change. And if it does become shorter, then we will have a head start.”Majola also said there would be substantial prize money and bonuses for players and franchises.

Villa fans react to Dean Smith interview

Plenty of Aston Villa fans have been reacting to Dean Smith’s post-match interview following the 4-1 loss to West Ham on Sunday.

Villa failed to revive their fortunes against David Moyes’ side, making it four defeats in a row in October and leading to reports that the 50-year-old’s job is in ‘serious jeopardy’.

Ollie Watkins cancelled out Ben Johnson’s opener before Declan Rice gave the Hammers the lead once again before half-time. Villa then had Ezri Konsa sent off at the start of the second half, with goals from Pablo Fornals and Jarrod Bowen sealing an emphatic win for the Hammers late on.

Smith gave his assessment of the match to the club’s official media team, with the interview available to view here.

He discussed each talking point and believed that Konsa’s sending off was ‘wrong’, while also name-checking Leon Bailey and Emiliano Martinez for mistakes for the visitors’ first two goals.

Villa fans react

Here is what these Villa fans had to say in reply to a clip from the club’s official Twitter channel showing the interview, with many left raging over what Smith had to say.

“Time to go Smith. We need to progress onto the top 6. We won’t do it with you.”

'Mister' x 'profexô': Rueda e Luxa fazem duelo de estilos diferentes

MatériaMais Notícias

Num confronto de rubro-negros, Flamengo e Sport se encaram na tarde deste domingo, às 16h, na Ilha do Urubu, pela 24ª rodada do Campeonato Brasileiro. À beira do campo estarão dois grandes treinadores, renomados e vencedores: Reinaldo Rueda à frente do time carioca e Vanderlei Luxemburgo comandando o Leão.

Gul shrugs off ball-tampering murmurs

Gul was optimistic the team would quickly adjust to the longer format and conditions in Sri Lanka for their next tour

Cricinfo staff24-Jun-2009

Umar Gul: “I think the art of reverse-swing is also God gifted which can be improved through practice”•AFP

Umar Gul, the leading wicket-taker of the World Twenty20, shrugged off Daniel Vettori’s questioning of the early reverse-swing he achieved in the tournament, and said that since the team management had responded to Vettori’s veiled references to ball-tampering, he had not taken them seriously.”I think the art of reverse-swing is also God gifted which can be improved through practice,” Gul told reporters after returning to a rapturous welcome in his hometown of Nawa Killi, near Peshawar. “I watched Wasim Akram and Waqar [Younis]’s bowling videos and developed this art through repeated practice. Whenever an Asian bowler performs and uses the reverse-swing the western cricketing countries raise the issue of ball-tampering against them,” Gul said.Gul also praised assistant coach Aaqib Javed, whose pep talk he said, had inspired the team to turn its game around. “Allah has helped the Pakistani team in their game plan, the team management and bowling coach Aaqib Javed told the players that like in World Cup of 1992 the guys must show the zeal to reach the wining stand and it happened when our team showed commitment.”Gul was also leading wicket-taker in the inaugural tournament two years ago and in the run to the title this time, he recorded the first-ever five-wicket haul in a T20I against New Zealand. Gul said he was unaware that he had just completed the best-ever figures of the international format. “When I came out of the ground, I came to know the fact that I have made a world record.”Pakistan’s next assignment is a tour to Sri Lanka – three Tests, five ODIs and two Twenty20s – beginning next week with a three-day warm-up match in Colombo. Gul was optimistic that the team would quickly adjust to the longer format and to conditions in Sri Lanka.Shahzaib Hasan, the 19-year-old opener, who made his debut in the World Twenty20, said he was aiming to make the one-day squad for the series against Sri Lanka. Shahzaib said the trip to England was a dream debut for him and the senior players had boosted his confidence and helped him through the tournament.”Younis Khan kept his confidence in me and now I believe that I could do well in future and perform for my country internationally,” Shahzaib said. “I will always remember the match in which I played against New Zealand and scored 35 runs. The catch of [Tillakaratne] Dilshan which I took in the final has also been engraved in my memory forever.” Shahzaib, who replaced the out-of-form Salman Butt in the side, scored 77 runs at a strike-rate of 106.94 from four matches.

Amit Singh's bowling action cleared

Amit Singh, the Rajasthan Royals medium-pacer who was reported for a suspect action twice during the IPL, can continue playing in the tournament after his action was cleared by a three-man panel. The report on Amit’s action said that all four types of deliveries tested – the stock delivery, the slower offbreak, the offcutter and the legcutter – were within the ICC’s stipulated tolerance limits. Amit, however, was cleared with a proviso: he will be restricted from playing for one year if he is reported again and will have to satisfy both the IPL technical committee and the BCCI that his action is legal before he is reintroduced as part of the Rajasthan squad.Amit was initially reported by umpires Daryl Harper and K Hariharan after Rajasthan’s match against Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 7. Umpires Gary Baxter and Kumar Dharmasena also cited Amit’s action as suspect while bowling certain deliveries during the game against Chennai in Kimberley.Amit has taken eight wickets in four matches at an impressive economy-rate of 5.42. He was Man of the Match against Bangalore earlier this month, taking 4 for 19.

Newcastle injury news on Callum Wilson

Kevin Phillips has given his reaction to some Newcastle United injury news involving Callum Wilson.

The Lowdown: Back training

Speaking in his pre-game press conference before the Magpies lost 2-1 at Wolves on Saturday, Steve Bruce revealed that the 29-year-old is due to start training ‘in the next couple of days’, and hinted that he could make a return to the squad after the upcoming international break.

The former Bournemouth striker has not played since he scored in the 2-2 draw at home to Southampton in the Premier League in late August.

The Latest: Phillips reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, former Premier League Golden Boot winner Phillips has claimed that Wilson being back in training is a big boost for Newcastle. He said:

“That’s a massive boost. They’ve missed him hugely. When he plays, he guarantees you goals, guarantees you a threat.

“That’s what Newcastle have lacked. It’s great news for him to be back in training.

“I’m sure they can’t wait for him to get out there and get going again.”

The Verdict: Huge

It certainly is huge that Wilson is back in training, as he could be back in a black-and-white-striped shirt after the international break has finished.

There is no doubt that Newcastle have missed him, having not being able to win any of the last four Premier League games without him, only managing to score four goals in that time (two in three matches prior to his injury.

He is such a key player for Bruce’s team and gives them a focal point up top from which the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin, Miguel Almiron and Joe Willock can thrive.

Romano breaks Martinez new after Spurs offer

After a summer proposal from Tottenham Hotspur, reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano has shared what Inter Milan star Lautaro Martinez ‘will soon’ do.

The Lowdown: Spurs agree Martinez fee…

As per reports from The Times and Alasdair Gold, Spurs agreed a fee of £60 million with Inter for the signing of Martinez during the last summer transfer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-news-2/” title=”Spurs latest news…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

However, after the Serie A giants sold star striker Romelu Lukaku, they seemingly pulled a U-turn on the deal and did not allow the Argentine to leave Italy after all.

Indeed, new Inter boss Simone Inzaghi would have been bereft of class attacking options should they have sold to Spurs, with Romano now sharing an update on Martinez’ future.

The Latest: Romano drops Martinez update…

Taking to Twitter, Romano has revealed what the 24-year-old ‘will soon’ do after Tottenham’s move fell through in the summer.

He claims that the forward, who bagged 19 goals and 11 assists in all competitions (Transfermarkt), is now on the verge of extending his contract with Inter until 2026.

“Lautaro Martinez will soon extend his contract with Inter until June 2026,” Romano explains.

“The agreement is at final stages and set to be signed – increased salary after turning down Tottenham and Atletico Madrid proposals.”

The Verdict: Big blow for Spurs…

Signing Martinez would have been managing director Fabio Paratici’s most deadly masterstroke yet, especially considering one Lionel Messi has branded him ‘spectacular’ (talkSPORT).

Alas, to sign a capable striking alternative to Harry Kane, it appears Spurs are slowly running out of options with another summer striking target, Dusan Vlahovic, also in talks over a fresh contract.
