Hasan Mahmud burns brightest on a historic day for Bangladesh's quicks

Bangladesh’s fast bowlers picked up all ten wickets in a Test innings for the first time, and Mahmud took five of them

Mohammad Isam02-Sep-2024Monday was a landmark day in the history of Bangladeshi fast bowling. When the visitors wrapped up Pakistan’s second innings for 172, they did so with their fast bowlers taking all ten wickets. It was a first for Bangladesh in Test cricket.Nahid Rana created a stir with his pace and bounce, and Taskin Ahmed used all his experience to keep Pakistan’s batters on the front foot. Amid all that, though, was the constant, wicket-taking presence of Hasan Mahmud, who picked up a maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket, vindicating the selectors’ decision to bring him into the long format after a strong start in white-ball cricket.Related

Mahmud became only the third Bangladesh quick in the last 11 years to take a five-for in Test cricket, and like Ebadot Hossain and Khaled Ahmed before him, he too had done so on foreign soil.”I have played a good amount of first-class cricket, so the red ball isn’t new to me,” he said. “It has a different feel in the hand. I like it in my hand. I always have a feeling that I can get a wicket with the red ball.”Mahmud delivered for his captain Najmul Hossain Shanto at important moments. After Bangladesh had made an epic recovery from 26 for 6 to reduce their first-innings deficit to 12 runs, they took the ball late on day three hoping for at least one wicket early in Pakistan’s second innings. Mahmud picked up two. He found Abdullah Shafique’s edge by inviting him to drive at a wide outswinger, and cleaned up nightwatcher Khurram Shahzad to leave Pakistan 9 for 2 at stumps.Mahmud gave Bangladesh two early breakthroughs late on day three•AFP/Getty ImagesOn the fourth morning, Taskin got Bangladesh their first breakthrough by removing Saim Ayub, before Rana ran through the middle order, leaving Pakistan 81 for 6. Then Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha added 55 for the seventh wicket, putting a puzzle in front of Bangladesh. It was time once more for Mahmud to make a mark. He removed Rizwan in much the same way he had sent back Shafique, coaxing a loose drive with a full one outside off, and perhaps this was even more impressive for the amount of late swing he generated with a 36-over-old ball. Next ball, he hit the perfect length in the corridor and found enough movement to get Mohammad Ali to nick to first slip.Agha’s unbeaten 47 led a mini rearguard, as Pakistan’s last two wickets added 36 runs before Mahmud ended their innings with his fifth wicket, that of the No. 11 Mir Hamza.”The bowler has to find ways to get wickets whenever he is handed the ball,” Mahmud said. “Taskin got us going, and then Rana bowled superbly. He was excellent. He shifted the momentum. I stuck to my process, to try to contribute.”A partnership often causes a bit of puzzle in the team. We tried to stop runs from both ends. Dry up the boundaries. It was our plan.”Mahmud’s performance capped a promising series with the ball. He bowled well in the first Test too, removing both openers in the first innings and dismissing Shan Masood in the second. And on the third day of this Test, he showed another facet of his game and his character.Mahmud revived Bangladesh with back-to-back wickets after a fightback from Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha•AFP/Getty ImagesWhen he walked in at No. 10, Bangladesh were 81 adrift of Pakistan’s first-innings total, and Litton Das had run out of recognised batting partners. He was batting with a hand injury and also battling cramps. Bangladesh couldn’t afford to give away a big lead, and Litton needed someone to stay with him. Mahmud did exactly that. He defended for two straight hours, scoring an unbeaten 13 off 51 balls. Mahmud was so focused on his job that it took him a while to realise just how long he had spent at the crease.”[Litton] was the set batter, so there was a lot of work to do,” Mahmud said. “All he told me was that I had to give him support. He said he will do the rest. That’s what I tried to do. I really enjoyed batting with . I know now that I have batted for two hours. I realised this later. I only saw that I batted 55 balls when I was walking off with the bat.”Mahmud reiterated the belief within the group, going back to the mood in the dressing room when Litton and Mehidy Hasan Miraz came together at 26 for 6.”When we faced that situation, we lost all those wickets, we had to come out with a new plan,” Mahmud said. “We trusted Litton and Mehidy out in the middle to do the job. We felt that they will get settled, get the runs. They got settled, so we believed that they can do the job.”Bangladesh’s belief will be tested one last time when they resume the fourth innings on Tuesday morning, needing another 143 with all ten wickets in hand, and potentially rain in the air. This has already been a special tour for Bangladesh. Mahmud has done his bit, and he will hope his batting won’t be required once again as they look to end their trip on a massive, unprecedented high.

Philadelphia Silenced Again by Dodgers in Game 2 Loss—With No Solution in Sight

PHILADELPHIA — In their meeting before Game 1 of the National League division series, Dodgers hitting coach Aaron Bates gave his players some advice: At some point, something will happen to make the 45,000 red-clad phanatics in Citizens Bank Park go nuts. Instead of letting the noise get to them, the Dodgers should just focus on silencing the crowd.

As it turned out, two games into this series, the Phillies’ bats have done that all by themselves. They staged a ninth-inning comeback attempt but still fell short, 4–3, in Game 2 to bring themselves one loss from winter.

Indeed, until that ultimately unsuccessful rally, the loudest sound of the night was the response as the Phillies’ stadium experience staff insisted on turning off the lights, turning up the music and playing closer Jhoan Duran’s flame- and spider-themed graphics as he entered a game his team was losing by three: a chorus of boos. (The opprobrium only increased once the game was over: One caller on WIP 94.1 suggested that an appropriate punishment for DH Kyle Schwarber would be to ban him from Wawa.)

It was hard to blame the fans. The starting pitching has been as good as the Phillies could have hoped for after ace Zack Wheeler was diagnosed with first a blood clot and then venous thoracic outlet syndrome in August. Cristopher Sánchez, the NL WAR leader with 8.0, allowed two runs through 5 ⅔ innings in Game 1; Jesús Luzardo allowed two in six-plus in Game 2. And outside of one Matt Strahm four-seamer that caught enough of the plate for Teoscar Hernández to hammer it for a three-run homer, the relievers have largely generated the strikeouts and weak contact they sought.

But the offense—especially the $709 million top three in the order—has not resembled the lineup that slugged .431 this year, fourth in the sport. Through the first two games, shortstop Trea Turner, Schwarber and first baseman Bryce Harper have combined for two singles, four walks and 11 strikeouts in 25 plate appearances. The only extra-base hits have come from catcher J.T. Realmuto (a triple in Game 1 and a double in Game 2), part-time right fielder Max Kepler (a double in Game 1 and a triple in Game 2) and Nick Castellanos, the other half of the right field platoon (a double in Game 2). As a team the Phillies have a .601 OPS this series. They are the only team still in the tournament that has not yet hit a home run.

And they can’t even agree on the problem, let alone the solution.

“I think [the guys at the top of the order] are trying to do a little too much right now, instead of just being themselves and looking for base hits and the power will come,” said manager Rob Thomson.

“I wouldn’t say we’re pressing,” said Harper. “I think we’re missing pitches over the plate. They’re making good pitches when they need to.”

“I’m not looking to go up there and slug,” said Schwarber. “I’m looking to take my at-bat and feel like you’re taking a quality at-bat. So I just feel like these guys, the first two games, they’ve been on.”

“I don’t really feel like we’re beating ourselves,” said Turner. “I feel like we’ve played good defense. We’re getting some hits here and there. It just doesn’t seem like enough.”

This is a disheartening assessment. Unfortunately, it might also be true. There have been a few unforced errors, such as when Castellanos loafed after a ball in the seventh and then threw to the wrong base, and when, two batters later, Turner made a wide throw on a fielder's choice that allowed the game's first run. Perhaps most curious was Thomson's call to have second baseman Bryson Stott bunt with the slow-footed Castellanos on second and no out in the ninth. The Dodgers executed a perfect wheel play and erased Castellanos at third.

But the Phillies could have overcome any of those mistakes if they had simply scored between the second inning of Game 1 and the eighth inning of Game 2. The Dodgers have pitched brilliantly, mixing offerings and pacing, hitting their spots and missing off the plate, generating whiffs. It makes for a rough hitter’s meeting when your best hope is that the other guys start making more mistakes.

“I’ll have probably a little meeting with them on Wednesday,” said Thomson. “But I love the fight in the eighth and ninth inning. They fought like hell, and hopefully that carries over into Wednesday. But this is a resilient group. Our backs are against the wall. We’ve just got to come out fighting.”

What he did not say—what none of them want to acknowledge—is that it’s been a while since this group did that. Since the magical 2022 run that ended in a six-game World Series loss to the Astros, the Phillies have produced only stunning flameouts. In ’23, they took a commanding 2–0 lead over the Diamondbacks in the NLCS only to let the bullpen blow the next two games. They won one more, then combined to score three runs over the final two games, both at home, and watched an 84-win Arizona team celebrate the pennant. Last year, they didn’t even make it that far: The third-place Mets rolled into Philadelphia and knocked them out of the NLDS in four games. Again the Phillies scored three runs in the final two games.

This core is rapidly exiting its prime. Harper, Turner and Schwarber will all be 33 next year, and Schwarber will be a free agent. Realmuto will be 35 and a free agent. Wheeler will be 36 and managing serious health concerns. Only three of the players who started Game 1—third baseman Alec Bohm, left fielder Brandon Marsh and Stott—are still on their initial rookie contracts, and even they have reached salary arbitration. When the Phillies are playing well, they have a lot of veteran leadership. When they’re struggling, they might just be getting old.

They can stave off those conversations with two wins in Los Angeles this week. In the 90 postseason best-of-five series in which one team went up 2–0, the trailing team has forced Game 5 17 times, and won it 10 times. The Phillies believe they can be the next ones. If they are wrong, it will be an awfully quiet October at Citizens Bank Park.

Nick Kurtz Reveals Which Players Influenced His Game After Rookie of the Year Win

Athletics first baseman Nick Kurtz learned he'd been named the American League's Rookie of the Year in an ideal location Tuesday—far from Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, where he built his star in 2025.

"I was in Hawaii celebrating a teammate getting married, so me and (shortstop) Jacob Wilson, actually, were in the same hotel room as it was kind of going on," Kurtz told Thursday afternoon in an interview promoting the Friday release of the video game . "The parents were watching the broadcast. The girlfriend, all those family members, got texts from them. Called them right away."

Winning the award unanimously—with Wilson, his teammate, coming in third—provided a fitting coda to one of the most dominant rookie seasons of the last decade. Kurtz slashed .290/.383/.619 with 36 home runs, 86 RBIs, and an impressive 5.4 bWAR in just 117 games. His efforts earned him a Silver Slugger in addition to becoming his franchise's first Rookie of the Year since pitcher Andrew Bailey in 2009.

Appropriately, a list of his influences teem with former Rookies of the Year. Three of the four players Kurtz cited as inspirations won the award.

"When I was a kid, it was Ryan Howard. I'm from the Central (Pennsylvania) area, so we grew up Phillies fans," Kurtz said. "When I got a little older in high school I loved watching Bryce Harper… Jim Thome is another guy who I didn't really get to watch live, but I've seen plenty of video of his swing. Another comparison—Yordan Alvarez, a newer guy, in college I tried to model my swing off of him."

Kurtz's scholarship has made him a face of an up-and-coming Athletics team filled with young talent, as right fielder Lawrence Butler, first baseman and left fielder Tyler Soderstrom, and Wilson all produced for the Sacramento-based team in '25.

Their sense of competition and camaraderie, however, is not limited to the diamond.

"Lawrence Butler I'll play a lot (of with)," Kurtz said. "(Infielder) Max Schuemann is another guy. Jacob (Wilson) is more of a guy."

Better than Bradley: Liverpool star looked sellable, now he's their star man

Anfield erupted. It really did. That was the performance Arne Slot’s Liverpool have been searching for this season, with Alexis Mac Allister’s second-half header putting Real Madrid to the sword in the Champions League.

Real Madrid were overwhelmed, enervated, reduced to mincemeat in a similar fashion to last season’s win over the La Liga giants, and it could have been a wider, more sobering margin for Europe’s biggest hitters, but for a strong performance from Thiabaut Courtois between the posts.

The win over Aston Villa in the Premier League at the weekend stopped the rot, ended the four-game losing run, but this was a display of a different nature, the Reds going from strength to strength and reminding Europe of their prowess.

There have been many issues and imbalances within Slot’s squad this season, but this was an emphatic performance, outstanding from every department, both in possession and against the ball.

Epitomising this mini-revival on Merseyside, of course, was Conor Bradley.

Bradley proves too much for Real (again)

Not for the first time over the past year, Bradley came up trumps against Real Madrid’s devastating frontline, this time focusing his sights on Vinicius Junior, who was ineffective all evening against the Northern Irish star.

Content creator George Scaife remarked that he had “the game of his life” against Los Blancos, winning all three of his tackles, winning eight duels and recovering so many balls.

With Jeremie Frimpong sidelined with an injury, the 22-year-old has a real chance to kick on now and nail down a starting berth after a shaky start to the campaign which has presented him as unsure and somewhat unfit at times.

There have been times when Bradley’s place in the Liverpool side has been called into question, but he has the ability to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who made an unsuccessful return to Anfield on Tuesday, in the long run.

However, there’s another star who has become their main man, having looked endangered in the starting line-up after the summer spending spree.

Liverpool star is becoming one of world's best

There’s no question that Liverpool have been woefully out of sorts this season, but Dominik Szoboszlai has been a pillar of strength throughout the opening months.

Effortlessly good as an all-action midfielder and tenacious and industrious in a makeshift right-back berth, Szoboszlai’s energy and enterprise on the ball have been second to none, and he has been hailed as “our most important player” by one prominent Reds fan, also admitting that he “would be one of the ones to drop out of the XI” after a summer of spending that saw Florian Wirtz signed for a record-breaking £116m fee.

But the Hungary skipper has been nothing short of sensational, and he was once again the star of the show, peppering the Real Madrid goal and assisting the winner with a delightful set-piece delivery.

The Liverpool Echo saw it fit to hand the 24-year-old a 9/10 match rating, ahead, even, of the goalscoring Mac Allister, producing a masterful creative display and working overtime to overwhelm the Spanish midfield.

While the likes of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk continue to stand proud as the leaders in Slot’s squad, there’s little question that Szoboszlai is outplaying the lot this term, and as the Reds click into gear, raising their collective level, Szoboszlai could hit staggering individual heights.

Another Chiesa: Slot's treatment of Liverpool star is a "sackable offence"

Liverpool have a shrewd solution to one of their biggest problems this season.

Telling MLB Wild Card Stat Spells Trouble for Teams That Lost Game 1

There's bad news for MLB teams that lost Game 1 of their wild-card series on Tuesday. Based on past results, it's unlikely that they'll come back to win the series.

As USA Today's Bob Nightengale noted, since MLB moved to its current postseason format in 2022, there have been 12 wild-card series. Ten of those 12 series have ended in sweeps. In addition to that, no team that lost the first game has wound up advancing to the next round.

That's really bad news for the Guardians, Padres, Yankees, and Reds, who all lost the opening games of their respective matchups on Tuesday. All head into Wednesday facing elimination, and the numbers suggest they'll all wind up on vacation soon.

The only teams to force a third game under the current format were the Mets in 2022 and the Brewers in 2024.

The 2022 Mets were hosting the Padres at Citi Field, but lost the opener of the series 7-1. They won Game 2 7-3, but lost Game 3 6-0 in the infamous Joe Musgrove ear game.

Last season, the Brewers lost Game 1 of their wild-card series against the Mets 8-4 at American Family Field. They bounced back in Game 2 to win 5-3, but New York bested Milwaukee 4-2 in Game 3.

We'll see if any of the trailing teams can reverse the trend this year.

Revealed: Why Man Utd signed Benjamin Sesko ahead of former Ruben Amorim favourite Viktor Gyokeres

It has been revealed that Manchester United opted to target Benjamin Sesko over Viktor Gyokeres in the summer, as the Red Devils believed that the young Slovenian was better suited to their project and style of play based on data. Sesko has had a slow start to life in the Premier League, but the club retain faith that the 22-year-old has a bright future at Old Trafford and is a big part of the club's future under Ruben Amorim.

United choose to pursue Sesko over Gyokeres, reports reveal

According to reports by The Mirror, United considered the signings of both Sesko and Gyokeres, but decided to prioritise the former as the ideal centrepiece to their new-look attack under Amorim.

The former RB Leipzig striker has only scored twice for the Red Devils thus far and has found himself in and out of the side following his £74million ($96.8m) move, but the club remain patient with the highly rated young forward.

Reports continue that Sesko’s running stats were crucial in his signing, as per The Times. Mike Sansoni joined the club as director of data in the summer following 11 years with the Mercedes Formula 1 team, and has led the new focus on data across the Red Devils’ recruitment process.

Sansoni works closely with Director of Football Jason Wilcox and is leading an initiative for the club to become a “fully data-driven club which will lead to success on and off the pitch”, using his extensive range of data on tens of thousands of players. This data led to the marquee signing of Sesko, who will hope to prove the club right in Red over the coming months.

AdvertisementGettySlow start for Sesko at Old Trafford after big-money move

Sesko’s two Premier League goals so far this season have come in defeat at Brentford and the victory at home to Sunderland at Old Trafford, which marked the beginning of United’s three-game winning streak which included a historic 2-1 win at Anfield.

The 22-year-old struck 39 goals in two impressive seasons with Leipzig, scoring 13 times in the Bundesliga last term and four in the Champions League. He is still developing into his role at United and will hope that his strong data-led profile leads to strong results on the pitch with his new employers – though he is currently out injured.

Gyokeres, meanwhile, has scored four times in the Premier League for leaders Arsenal and six times overall, following his £63.4m ($83m) move from Sporting Lisbon, where he was prolific under Amorim and drew inevitable links as a result.

'I'm relaxed' – Amorim backs new signing

Amorim said on Sesko's adaptation period: "I'm relaxed, he's not relaxed. I understand how things are in football and he's going to struggle. That is normal. He has no experience here.

"Ben is a young kid, a control freak. He wants to control everything – and he's not going to control everything. He has more potential than I was thinking [but] we need to understand how he likes to play and also to put in our ideas.

"I'm quite relaxed with that. He is going to be our striker for the long term but he's going to have these struggles and these bumps during the ride. That is a normal thing in football."

GettySesko set for period on the sidelines

Sesko could be out for three weeks following a knee injury sustained against Tottenham Hotspur prior to the international break. He will hope to regain his goalscoring boots on his return, which could come after Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo have departed for the Africa Cup of Nations.

United face Everton on Monday at Old Trafford, knowing that victory could see them regain their place in the top six of the Premier League. There will be a tribute to the late Mani of the Stone Roses prior to kick-off, after the massive Red Devils fan passed away aged 63 on Thursday.

The tribute will create a powerful atmosphere prior to kick-off in a match which could continue United’s strong recent run of form, amidst a five-match unbeaten streak which has seen Amorim win the Premier League’s Manager of the Month for October.

'This is a tough question' – Sandro Tonali offers surprise update on Newcastle future amid talk of Serie A return

Sandro Tonali has sparked uncertainty over his long-term future at Newcastle United after admitting he is taking things “year by year” amid ongoing rumours of a potential return to Serie A. The Italian midfielder, who recently signed a secret contract extension until 2029, insists he is “happy” on Tyneside but refused to rule out the possibility of one day leaving the club.

  • Tonali admits uncertainty over long-term future at Newcastle

Tonali has offered a candid update on his Newcastle United future, admitting he cannot guarantee he will stay at St James’ Park long-term. Speaking after the Magpies’ 2-0 Champions League win over Athletic Club, the Italy international said he is taking his career “year by year” rather than making any long-term promises. His response followed reports of interest from Serie A sides Juventus and AC Milan, both said to be monitoring his situation closely.

Tonali’s comments come despite Newcastle’s firm stance that the midfielder remains a central figure in their long-term project under Howe. The 25-year-old, who joined Newcastle from AC Milan in a £55 million deal in 2023, signed an extended contract while serving his 10-month betting ban, tying him to the club until 2028 with an option for an additional year. Club insiders maintain that Tonali has repeatedly expressed gratitude to Newcastle for their support during that difficult period, and that he remains fully committed to their ambitions.

However, his nuanced response highlights the growing challenge for Newcastle to keep pace with the ambitions of their biggest stars. After losing Alexander Isak to Liverpool in a £125 million deal last summer, Tonali’s uncertainty serves as a reminder that even their most loyal players may consider other opportunities if the club’s progress stalls. The Magpies’ push for consistent European football — and their ability to compete for trophies — could prove decisive in determining whether Tonali stays for the long haul.

Tonali opens up on future — reveals secret renewal

Tonali was asked directly whether he saw his long-term future at Newcastle. His answer, though measured, left little room for interpretation. “This is a tough question because, you know, [in] football you need to think year for year,” he told The i Paper. “I don’t want to say I want to stay here 10 years and in two years, three years, four years [or] five years I will go.”

He continued: “I want to think, just for me, year for year. This is football. The last summer was tough for us, for Alex [Isak], but this is football. If you have an option for your life, for another team you need to think about everything.” Tonali added that, for now, he remains content on Tyneside: “I don’t want to say ‘Yes, I want to stay here 10 years,’ but now I’m happy here. I don’t think anything about another team.”

The Italian also addressed his “secret” contract renewal, clarifying that the extension had been agreed during his betting suspension in 2023. “This extension was three years ago after the ban, I don’t know why the last week everybody spoke about it,” he explained. “The club spoke to me, spoke with my agent, and [we] signed for one more year. It was because I have confidence in this team, and this team have confidence in me. So we worked together.”

  • Tonali's constant links with Serie A return

After becoming the most expensive Italian footballer in history with his £60 million move from AC Milan, Tonali's first season was derailed by a 10-month suspension for breaching betting regulations. Newcastle stood by him throughout, paying his wages and ensuring he stayed integrated within the club’s setup, which deepened his appreciation for the Magpies.

Since returning to action in August 2024, Tonali has quickly reestablished himself as a cornerstone of Howe’s midfield. He was instrumental in helping the Magpies lift the Carabao Cup last season and has featured prominently in their Champions League campaign this term.

Nevertheless, Tonali’s ties to Italy — and his affection for AC Milan — remain strong. Speaking to Vivo Azzurro last month, he acknowledged that a return to Serie A “can never be ruled out,” describing Italy as “my country” and a place where “the league is getting better and better.”

Tonali still has a Newcastle contract till 2028

Tonali’s remarks have placed Newcastle’s sporting hierarchy on alert. New sporting director Ross Wilson is currently overseeing a review of player contracts, and Tonali’s status is likely to be a top priority. While his existing deal offers protection until 2028, the midfielder’s stature within the team could prompt discussions about improved terms.

For Eddie Howe, keeping Tonali happy may hinge more on ambition than money. The Italian’s comments suggest that continued progression — particularly qualification for the Champions League knockout stages — will be key to convincing him that his future remains in England.
