The San Fransisco 49ers could be looking to take full control of Leeds United after a major claim emerged this week…

What’s the word?

According to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth, who delivered a fresh verdict on the situation around the boardroom at Elland Road. He wrote:

“Less than a year after that last increase, the 49ers have bought a little more of the pie. This time, there was little fanfare.

“[Andrea] Radrizzani’s partners appear content to tuck their feet a little further under the table quietly, but it does feel like their involvement is only leading towards one thing – full control.

“Why else would they have traversed the Atlantic in the first place? Why else would they have invested to this degree, undertaken so many fact-finding missions, explored how they could augment and develop Elland Road and brought Peter Lowy, billionaire Westfield heir, to the table with them?”

Exciting times ahead?

Indeed, this certainly does appear to be the case as similar comments in recent weeks and months point towards something happening.

For example, on Thursday morning [11th November], finance expert Kieran Maguire highlighted that the Whites were having a busy morning at Companies House.

“Looks as if [the] club is changing its constitution in relation to the transfer of shares between investors,” he tweeted.

Whilst the Italian supremo has always hinted at increasing the value of the club, just last week he reiterated their ambition at the Web Summit (via the YEP):

“Now we are partnered with 49ers, this is fundamentally very important because it will be very difficult to stay in the Premier League, but if we stay in it this year I think we can go much more than last year and go into the top six – start to renovate the stadium and continue to grow the value of this club.”

However, making that happen will be a tough task as Radrizzani cannot afford to go alone in such plans.

“I don’t think Radrizzani has those resources himself whereas the 49ers are more likely to be able to tap into American markets for that so you can see the logic of what they’ve done,” Maguire further explained to the ‘Price of Football’ podcast this week.

It seems that if Leeds want to continue to grow both on and off the pitch, then the 49ers involvement will need to increase and as Smyth alludes to, the group themselves may want to take full control in the near future – expanding their investment this month is certainly another foot in the right direction to achieving that.

United’s season so far hasn’t gone to plan with the side occupying 15th place, just three points above the relegation zone, but this huge development should provide some excitement amongst the fanbase.

We’ve seen Newcastle United taken over by wealthy backers, so Leeds’ chances of breaking into the top six consistently will be seriously dented without their own great strides off the pitch.

The 49ers group can very much provide that, so if Smyth’s words ring true, it could be a very exciting future ahead in Yorkshire.

Fans on edge

Salah’s future at the club has been an overshadowing worry for Liverpool fans this season, with the Egyptian proving to be a talismanic figure for Klopp’s side since his transfer from Roma back in 2017.

The now 29-year-old has bagged 13 assists in 43 appearances for Klopp’s side this term, yet again proving his value to a side who are capitalising on his performances and setting their sights on an unprecedented quadruple trophy swoop.

Salah has remained composed throughout the contract debacle and has already equalled his goal tally of last season in six games less.

The £90m-rated sensation insisted his contract issues were not about monetary gain, as he told Flannagan: “I think the fans know what I want, but in the contract, it’s not everything about the money at all.”

Asked by ThisisAnfield, Flannagan gave his verdict on the quote from Salah: “His added quote that it wasn’t all about the money was interesting, as it was unprompted – I’d asked him how he saw his future, but my question hadn’t mentioned money.”

Either way, with the clock ticking on his deal, supporters will be on the edge of their seats about whether or not he’ll pen new terms in Merseyside. This claim certainly seems to suggest that he might, however.

Despite only managing to win three of their 18 Premier League games so far this season, drawing seven and losing eight along the way, one figure at Leeds United that has been rather crucial for the Yorkshire club is Raphinha.

With eight goals, one assist and an overall performance rating of 7.21/10, making him Leeds’ highest-rated player according to WhoScored, this shows just how much of a key player he is for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.

After ending his debut season with Leeds as their highest-rated player according to WhoScored last season, the Brazilian was linked with a move away from Elland Road last summer with the likes of fellow Premier League clubs Liverpool and Manchester United reportedly interested in him.

A recent report from TNT Sports claims that German club Bayern Munich are closing in on a deal to sign the attacker in January and while this may not be as bad as selling him to another Premier League side, it would still be an unforgivable disaster if the winger were to leave Leeds in January.

It would certainly be a big blow for Bielsa given how important Raphinha has been to his side since arriving from Rennes back in October 2020, scoring a total of 14 goals and providing ten assists in 47 appearances across all competitions.

Labelled as a “relentless” player due to his work on the pitch by Noel Whelan, it would surely be a scary thought for a lot of Leeds fans to think about how this season could end if the forward leaves next month.

Taking into account his goals and overall performances this season, it’s safe to say that Raphinha has the ability to keep Leeds away from the relegation zone and in the Premier League next season if he can continue playing well and scoring goals.

If he ends up staying at Elland Road for the remainder of the season, it should be one of the club’s top priorities to secure the winger, who is currently valued at £36m according to Transfermarkt, with a new deal to keep him in Yorkshire beyond 2024, which is when his current contract expires.

After all, losing him is an eventuality that Leeds simply cannot face given their perilous position in the league table. If Raphinha leaves and they fail to beat the drop, the whole scenario will border on unforgivable from Victor Orta.

That’s according to Canadian outlet The Sports Network, who claim that Spurs are one of many teams to have enquired about the availability of the Lille talisman, though any move seems more likely to happen in the summer.

Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool are mooted with interest, alongside LaLiga giants Real Madrid.

It’s thought that the 21-year-old is “open” to every possible destination after his agent, Nick Mavromaras, told TSN that David would “benefit from a summer move.”

Everton have appointed Frank Lampard as their new manager, and he wasted no time using his only opportunity of the transfer window on Deadline Day to bring in two players to work with him in his efforts to save the side’s season.

Donny van de Beek and Dele Alli joined the Toffees in the final hours of the January transfer window, becoming the fourth and fifth signings of the month, suggesting that the ex-Chelsea boss has plans to overhaul the midfield and attacking threat of the team which has currently failed to make a significant impact, scoring 11 fewer goals than the side has conceded in the Premier League this season.

With that being said, the first player that Lampard can ruthlessly axe from his team is Alex Iwobi, who has been with the club since 2019, scoring just six goals in 80 appearances from his forward position.

That’s one more goal than he has had managers, with Lampard remarkably becoming the fifth permanent manager that the 25-year-old has worked under in his time at Goodison Park.

The Verdict: Big

The fact that the Light Blues are planning ahead already is big for their ambitions for next season.

It looks as if they are going to miss out on the SPFL title, but should they end up winning the Europa League, then they would automatically qualify for the Champions League group stages.

Thus, they could potentially attract big names like Bale to the football club, and so deals will need to be in place in order to fight off the likely competition.

In a world away from the multi-millions in TV money you get for playing in the Premier League, Rangers must be creative in the transfer market to build a squad capable of competing domestically and in Europe.

This means that Ross Wilson must work overtime in order to secure the best possible signings, and the club’s title success last season suggests that he done an excellent job so far.

One player with whom he pulled off a masterclass was winger Scott Wright, who he brought in during the January window to bolster Steven Gerrard’s title pursuit.

The Gers pinned him down to a four-and-a-half-year deal, which suggests that they see long-term potential in the forward. They initially agreed to sign him on a pre-contract but were able to snap him up in January for a bargain fee.

Wilson reportedly paid Aberdeen £180k for his services, with Wright playing 13 times before the end of the 2020/21 campaign. He provided one goal and two assists, setting up a goal in the Europa League.

At the time of the signing, Gerrard hailed him as a player he has admired from afar, backing him to be a success at Ibrox. He said: “It is very pleasing to have Scott for the rest of this season. This will give him the opportunity to gain some valuable game time in a blue shirt for the rest of the season.

“Scott is a player that I have admired and I believe that we can utilise his skill set within our system. He will train with his new teammates tomorrow.”

At the time of writing (26/10/21), Wright is valued at £540k by Transfermarkt. He has produced three goals and two assists in 26 appearances for the club, with three starts in the Premiership this term. This shows that Wilson was able to pull off a masterclass with the forward in January.

He was able to sign Wright for just a third of his current market value, whilst the winger still has plenty of time to develop even further at the age of 24. If he continues to be a regular first team option for Rangers, his value could continue to rise and the £180k Rangers paid for him will look all the more like an absolute bargain.

It was a nominal fee to pay for a talented young player in whom Gerrard seemingly sees a great deal of potential.

Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch would be foolish to not turn to Crysencio Summerville over the closing stages of the Premier League season as he continues to impress for the U23s.

On Monday evening, the Dutch U21 international bagged a hat-trick in their rout over Crystal Palace, taking his total for the campaign to six goals from ten starts in the Premier League 2 Division One, a feat only bettered by first-team duo Sam Greenwood and Joe Gelhardt, as per FBRef.

The Whites’ academy boss Andrew Taylor waxed lyrical about the 5 foot 5 winger following the display, he told LUTV:

“For me, Cry is a pleasure to work with. He works hard defensively and then, his ability going forward is sensational. He just needs to keep doing that, keep performing.

Now valued at just £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the Wales international has delivered only four goals across 32 appearances, and he is currently in a nine-game run without a goal.

The Yorkshiremen are among the lowest scorers in the Premier League and that is in part to Patrick Bamford’s continued injury problems, but with Summerville in such fine form, it surely wouldn’t hurt to give him a go?

LeedsLive reporter Beren Cross claimed the 20-year-old gem was “unplayable at times” in the U23’s rout of Palace on Monday night, with Marsch in attendance.

With Summerville only playing 225 minutes for the first team and barely any in the Premier League, he could well emerge as something of a secret weapon for the American in the final months of the season.

West Ham are still interested in completing the signing of Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Lingard excels at West Ham

The 29-year-old spent half of last season on loan at the London Stadium, becoming a hero in no time and spearheading the Hammers’ European challenge.

Lingard scored nine goals and registered four assists in just 16 Premier League appearances for West Ham, prior to returning to the northwest.

He has again struggled for playing time at Old Trafford this season, however, and the Hammers have been tipped to re-sign him in the near future.

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke claimed Lingard remains on David Moyes’ radar, with their interest never going away:

“He has been on West Ham’s list since last summer when he had that great loan spell at the London Stadium last season. He doesn’t figure in Manchester United’s plans going forward.”

Newcastle are now strongly linked with the 32-cap England international, so it appears Rob Newman could have a fight on his hands for his signature in the next ten days.

While it would be great to see Lingard back in east London, it does look increasingly as though he could be part of the Tyneside revolution, following their recent big-money takeover.

Should the player opt for London living and a club currently thriving instead of fighting relegation however, Lingard would be a fantastic addition to Moyes’ squad this month.
