Newcastle claim last-gasp victory over Fulham

With a mixed start to the Premier League campaign setting the scene for a fascinating contest on Tyneside, the Magpies were able to show resilience to claim all three points against Fulham on Saturday courtesy of a Bruno Guimaraes effort in injury time.

In what could turn out to be a crucial victory for the hosts, Howe’s men deserved to come out on top on the balance of play, given they took on 18 shots to the Cottagers’ 12 and recorded an Expected Goals total of 2.14, per Fotmob.

Speaking post-match, the former Bournemouth manager embraced his side’s ‘relentless’ quality to weather a frantic final 20 minutes to seal a morale-boosting win.

He told Match of the Day: “You didn’t think we could get that second goal, it was end to end, it was really attacking performance from both teams, both teams were going for the win. We are delighted to get it ourselves. It was a really good last 20 minutes from us; we were relentless in our pursuit to try to win, and eventually, one of those chances fell for us.”

Even if Nick Woltemade’s goalscoring run ground to a halt, Newcastle showed another side to their game to drag themselves over the line to keep pace in the hunt for continental qualification, though they now have little time to recover before an EFL Cup last 16 clash against Tottenham Hotspur in midweek.

On-field matters will take priority for now, though, it appears the Magpies are already doing work behind the scenes to identify transfer targets to bolster their bid for another successful season.

Ultimately, competition for his signature is fierce, and a departure from the Riverside Stadium may only occur if Middlesbrough fail to earn promotion.

Despite this, Newcastle are a tempting proposition for any player rising through the English football pyramid, so it will be over to them to put forward a tempting package.

A passagem de Everaldo pelo América teve início em 2022. Foram 84 partidas, com nove gols anotados e oito assistências registradas. Dos nove, três tentos foram marcados neste ano.

Manchester United’s 15th-place finish in the Premier League last campaign was a glaring example of the mess the club have found themselves in over recent years.

Ruben Amorim was unable to have the desired effect after taking the reins 12 months ago, as seen by their unacceptable standing in England’s top-flight during 2024/25.

However, his side have shown glimpses of their quality over the last few weeks, subsequently enjoying a four-game unbeaten run – the joint best of the manager’s tenure.

Players such as Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro have all stepped up and produced goods, with the trio being involved in the vast majority of their recent efforts.

The same can’t be said for one other first-team member, with questions now starting to be asked about his long-term future under Amorim at Old Trafford.

Diogo Dalot’s decline at United in 2025/26

Just a couple of seasons ago, full-back Diogo Dalot would have been one of the first names on the United teamsheet to many supporters – but he’s massively failed to reach such heights in recent months.

Amorim’s arrival saw the wide switch to a 3-4-2-1 system, which placed a huge emphasis on wing-backs who are able to get up and down – allowing for a positive impact at both ends of the pitch.

However, such a formation doesn’t suit the Portuguese international’s playstyle, with the 26-year-old a more defensive option – as seen by his tally of eight goals in 148 appearances.

His latest outing against Nottingham Forest highlighted his lack of impact, featuring for 68 minutes before being the first Red Devils player to be replaced.

His withdrawal was warranted when delving into his underlying stats, with Dalot being unable to complete any of his attempted dribbles or crosses at the City Ground.

The full-back also only managed to win three of the eight duels he entered, often struggling to deal with the threat posed by Reds winger Dan Ndoye on Saturday.

The United star who’s becoming a bigger problem than Dalot

Given their current unbeaten run in the Premier League, it may come as a surprise to many to see numerous players disappoint and fail to contribute to their recent revival.

However, like Dalot, multiple first-team members have come into question for their lack of impact and disappointing showings over the last couple of game weeks.

Patrick Dorgu was once seen as the starting left-back after his £30m switch last January, but he’s since been dropped to the bench and had to settle for substitute appearances in each of the last four games.

The Dane may now be handed his chance to shine in the weeks ahead, especially after the poor performances produced by Dalot during the winning spree.

Benjamin Sesko was just one of the big-money additions made by the Red Devils hierarchy during the summer, forking out a staggering £74m to RB Leipzig for the centre-forward’s signature.

The Slovenian arrived with huge expectations at Old Trafford after netting 21 goals across all competitions last season, but it’s safe to say he’s yet to reach such heights in the Premier League.

He may have already netted twice in his first 11 appearances, but like Dalot, he failed to deliver and has now gone three games without a goal after scoring two in a row.

Sesko’s showing against Forest last weekend was yet another to forget, as he only registered 21 touches of the ball – the fewest of any player on the pitch.

He also only managed to complete nine passes and lost 100% of the duels he entered – leading to one analyst labelling his showing against Sean Dyche’s side as “anonymous”.

The 22-year-old’s lack of impact was highlighted in his inability to direct any of his efforts on target, subsequently failing to provide the clinical edge Amorim requires in front of goal.

Whilst he’s shown glimpses of his quality to date, it’s clear he’s lacking confidence in attacking areas, which no doubt will be a huge concern to the manager.

Given the amount spent on his signature, many will have been expecting a rapid start to life at Old Trafford, but up to now it’s not meant to be, with Sesko needing to find his feet quickly to avoid being the next in a long line of failed signings at United.

ECB welcomes funding although it falls well short of £35 million pledge from Rishi Sunak last year

The UK government has pledged £1.5million for the construction of two new indoor, all-season cricket domes in Luton and Lancashire. But while the development has been welcomed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), it is significantly less than the £35million promised last summer by then-prime minister Rishi Sunak.That announcement, in April 2024, mooted the construction of 16 domes across England by 2029, as a tie-in to the women’s and men’s T20 World Cups in 2026 and 2030, respectively. The ECB has already funded a prototype dome in Bradford (open in 2023), and now seem resigned to not seeing anywhere near that figure going forward.Sunak’s promise looked set not to materialise after a change of government last summer. Speaking at the announcement of these amended plans last week at Leyland Cricket Club in Lancashire, culture secretary Lisa Nandy stated Sunak’s plans were not grounded in reality.”Unfortunately, the announcement made by the last government was a fantasy,” Nandy told the BBC. “There was not a single penny of actual funding attached to it.”So the announcement in itself equated to absolutely nothing at all. We are backing sport because we know how much it matters. It changes people’s lives. It opens up opportunities that people would never have had otherwise.”The ECB plan to push for further funding, in line with the governing body’s stated aims in their game-wide strategy, Inspiring Generations, which involve “working in partnership with the Government to maximise the legacy of the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup”. This £1.5million is in addition to the £400million for grassroots sport that was announced at the Spending Review, which will benefit a wide range of sports over the next four years.Speaking on Monday’s announcement, ECB chair Richard Thompson said: “These state-of-the-art all-weather cricket domes will be transformative for the communities they serve, opening up cricket to more people year-round and providing top-class facilities for elite players too. They are an important part of our plans to break down barriers and make cricket the most inclusive team sport.”We are pleased to secure Government support for these incredible community facilities, which we hope will provide a vital proof point of what can be achieved, and look forward to future collaboration. As we have seen in Bradford, centres like these can have a hugely positive impact–bringing people together, opening up opportunities, and inspiring the next generation.”As we look ahead to hosting the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2026, building on that success by rolling out more domes in communities across England and Wales will be key to creating a genuine and lasting legacy from the tournament.”The two state-of-the-art domes will be focused on opening cricket up to a broader, more diverse audience as part of the “Plan for Change” initiative to get more young people active and participating in sport. وواصل: “نتعرض لضغوط رهيبة جدًا، وكم تفاصيل في العمل لم أرها في أي نادٍ، وتستطيع التعامل مع الضغوط طوال الوقت، فالعمل يكون 12 ساعة في اليوم، وممكن تصل لـ14 ساعة في بعض الأحيان حال ضغط المباريات”.

وأكمل: “هذا هو السر الذي يجعل الفريق يمتلك الإيمان حتى في أحلك وأصعب الظروف، ممكن تسجل في الدقيقة 90، أو إنك تفوز ببطولات رغم صعوبة الموقف”.

استطرد: “عملت في الأهلي لمدة 7 أشهر، جئت بعد رحيل مارسل كولر، وكنت في فريقي السابق حرس الحدود، وتلقيت مكالمة وأنا متجه للمحاضرة قبل مباراة بيراميدز وقتها، كابتن محمد يوسف اختارني لأنني عملت معه في وقت سابق وبدأت المشوار فورًا، مع عماد النحاس، ثم خوسيه ريبيرو، ثم عماد النحاس مرة أخرى، ثم ييس توروب”.

واسترسل: “هناك عوامل كثيرة في فشل تجربة ريبيرو لكني لأ أريد الدخول في تفاصيل كثيرة، لن أتحدث عن الشق البدني لأن هناك ناس متخصصين أكثر، لكن ممكن نقول أن الفريق أنهى الدوري ثم دخل في كأس العالم للأندية”.

وأضاف: “النتائج في كأس العالم للأندية والحلم الكبير بوصول الأهلي للدور الثاني لم يتحقق بسبب وجود مشاكل أخرى، لأن الرجل كان يحاول تطبيق نظام جديد، والأهلي لم يكن محظوظًا خاصة أمام إنتر ميامي”.

وقال: “من وجهة نظري، الأهلي لا يتحمل عددًا كبيرًا من التجارب التي قد تؤدي في النهاية إلى عدم الوصول للبطولات بالطريقة المعتاد عليها، الأهلي يحتاج إلى مدرب أكثر مباشرة، صحيح أنه كان مدربًا هجوميًا جدًا، لكن ريبيرو كان يعتمد أكثر على المساحات ومحاولة الاختراق من العمق حتى عندما كنا نتحدث معه في تلك الفترة، كنا نؤكد له أن هناك أمورًا معينة في الدوري المصري يمكن أن تساعده على تطوير أسلوبه بشكل أو بآخر، وتمنحه قدرة أكبر على خلق الفرص بشكل مريح وطريقته كانت تحتاج إلى تطوير بسيط لتناسب أسلوب الأهلي”.

وتابع عن الفرق بين ريبيرو وتوروب: “توروب مباشر أكثر على المرمى، ويهتم بتفاصيل خاصة بالتنظيم الدفاعي أثناء عملية الهجوم، لا يمتلك فكرة المجازفة بإلقاء كل الأوراق الهجومية دفعة واحدة، بل يسعى دائمًا إلى تحقيق التوازن وهو دائمًا يتحدث معنا عن أن العقلية الهجومية مهمة جدًا، لكن الحفاظ على الدفاع هو ما يسمح لك بالوصول إلى البطولات”.

وأكمل بشأن بداية الدوري: “الأهلي دائمًا يلعب على المركز الأول، ومع وجود مارسل كولر قبل أن يأتي كابتن عماد النحاس، كان الأهلي متأخرًا بفارق أربع نقاط عن بيراميدز ومع تبقي ست مباريات فقط، ورغم ذلك أنهى الأهلي المسابقة بطلًا للدوري بفارق نقطتين عن بيراميدز”.
