UP Warriorz seek change in fortunes against solid Capitals

Capitals have won two out of three matches and seem like a settled unit with most boxes ticked

Who’s playingDelhi Capitals vs UP Warriorz
M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, 7:30pm ISTWhat to expect: Warriorz searching for first winUP Warriorz are yet to find their feet and will hope a change of venue brings a change in fortune, heading into the first reverse fixture of this season. They are also the only team without a win in WPL 2025. Under new captain Deepti Sharma, they haven’t been able to lock their XIs or their batting line-up. While there has been some individual flashes of brilliance – such as Kiran Navgire’s blazing fifty, Chinelle Henry’s death-over hitting and Sophie Ecclestone’s economical spells – Warriorz have not fired as a unit. They do not have a strike bowler (Saima Thakor was dropped after one game). Misfields and dropped catches have also hurt. The likes of Grace Harris and Tahlia McGrath have also not fired in the middle order. On the other hand, Capitals have won two out of three matches and seem like a settled unit with most boxes ticked. Their middle order consisting of Annabel Sutherland and Marizanne Kapp has stepped up, their captain Meg Lanning has found her rhythm with a fifty against Warriorz in the last game and their pace attack has collectively taken 11 wickets in three matches.Team news and likely XIsCapitals are unlikely to change their winning combination which means they might still prefer Niki Prasad’s lower-order batting over Radha Yadav’s left-arm spin.Delhi Capitals: 1 Meg Lanning (capt), 2 Shafali Verma, 3 Jemimah Rodrigues, 4 Annabel Sutherland, 5 Marizanne Kapp, 6 Jess Jonassen, 7 Sarah Bryce (wk), 8 Niki Prasad, 9 Shikha Pandey, 10 Arundhati Reddy, 11 Minnu ManiTahlia McGrath has had scores of 0 and 1 in the two matches and had an average outing with the ball too, picking up one wicket for 47 runs in 6.5 overs. Warriorz might bring in allrounder Chamari Athapaththu for the Bengaluru leg before she joins the Sri Lanka squad on a white-ball tour of New Zealand to bolster their batting.UP Warriorz (likely): 1 Kiran Navgire, 2 Chamari Athapaththu, 3 Vrinda Dinesh, 4 Uma Chetry (wk), 5 Deepti Sharma (capt), 6 Tahlia McGrath/Grace Harris, 7 Shweta Sehrawat, 8 Chinelle Henry, 9 Sophie Ecclestone, 10 Rajeshwari Gayakwad, 11 Kranti GoudCan Shafali Verma make a big score in Bengaluru?•WPL

Players to watch: Shafali Verma and Sophie EcclestoneShafali Verma smashed two half-centuries in four attempts at an impressive strike rate of 140.6 in the Bengaluru leg of WPL last year. Having hit 43, 0, 26 so far this edition, Shafali might be keen on converting her starts and making a big score at the venue again.Sophie Ecclestone has accounted for three of the seven wickets taken by Warriorz so far and has looked most threatening in the bowling attack. She has an economy of 5.87, and her spell in the powerplay will be crucial for Warriorz to make early inroads. Against Gujarat Giants, she had figures of 2-0-6-1 in the powerplay, but she was given only one over against Capitals where she leaked eight runs.Key stats Capitals are the second-best bowling unit in the death overs (17-20) in WPL 2025 so far, having conceded 8.53 runs an over.Ecclestone and Deepti are the only Warriorz bowlers to have bowled their full quota of four overs each in both their games. Navgire’s 24-ball fifty against Capitals was the joint fastest by a Warriorz batter in WPL.

Isak can do the one thing for Liverpool that Haaland never did at Man City

Alexander Isak is finally a Liverpool player. That’s the headline. That’s the saga of the summer and that may well be the deal that commences not only more Anfield glory in the current campaign, but for years to come.

The Reds have been accused of not doing enough in the transfer window in the past. They welcomed a new manager in Arne Slot this time last summer and the only immediate arrival proved to be Federico Chiesa as doubts arrived over Richard Hughes’ ability to get the job done. One year on, those doubts are laughable.

The Reds are in a better place than ever to repeat the dominance that Anfield has been unfortunate enough to watch elsewhere in the Premier League era. But, it must be said, they still need to find a way to make sure all their new pieces connect to form another title-winning machine, especially Isak and Hugo Ekitike.

The Haaland mistake that Liverpool must avoid

On paper, it is the ultimate position of luxury to have two of the world’s best strikers at your disposal. Alas, things on the pitch are slightly different.

Unless managers are willing to sacrifice their systems and midfield numbers to have two strikers lead the line together, there’s a high chance that one high-level forward will have to settle for a place on the bench or an unfamiliar role. And all it takes is one look at Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez to realise how that problem ends.

julian-alvarez-manchester-city-tottenham-hotspur-academy-postecoglou-mikey-moore

The Citizens had the world at their feet for four straight years in the Premier League, with Haaland breaking record after record along the way. Left to watch on, however, was the talented Alvarez. In an ideal world, Pep Guardiola would have found a way for them to click together on the pitch, but it just did not come.

The duo combined for just eight goals in 63 games and Alvarez’s compromise ultimately proved to be untenable as he departed to Atletico Madrid, becoming one of Europe’s most impressive players. It should be seen as one of Guardiola’s biggest regrets, given how they’ve struggled without the forward.

Whilst much of last season’s struggles will be put down to Rodri’s injury, and others that followed, there’s no denying that City became over-reliant on Haaland for goals. The Norwegian did his job – scoring 34 goals in all competitions – but this time there was no Alvarez to swoop in when City’s star suffered a rare off day.

Had Guardiola compromised to find a place for Alvarez, things could have been different for Man City last season. Instead, it was Diego Simeone who benefitted from handing the Argentine 30 starts in La Liga.

It’s not a problem that is going away anytime soon for City, either. This time, it’s Omar Marmoush missing out. The Egyptian arrived in January and handed City an instant attacking boost – scoring seven goals in 16 Premier League games – yet has already found himself pushed out to the left-hand side this season and didn’t start at all against Wolves.

Man City have inadvertently handed Liverpool the exact blueprint to avoid if they want to see both Ekitike and Isak thrive. Now, it’s down to Slot to keep both strikers happy.

How Liverpool could line-up with Isak & Ekitike

Will Slot change his system? Will Ekitike be left to settle for a place on the bench? Or will one find themselves out wide? Those are the questions that only Liverpool can truly answer after the international break, but they’ve certainly got options to ensure that both players enjoy the game time that they deserve.

The easiest way here is to start Ekitike out wide. Unlike Alvarez, the Frenchman has featured in that role before arriving in the Premier League and is arguably a similar profile to Liverpool’s current left-winger Cody Gakpo. Both are towering, physical figures who look to cut inside from the left using their skill and strength.

The Gakpo mould is one that Ekitike should follow if he wants to enjoy his best form from that side. The Dutchman started his Liverpool career as a No.9, before Slot arrived and moved him to the left of the front three. Since then, he has thrived.

Nothing has to be permanent, either. Isak’s injury history suggests that having a player like Ekitike available will prove to make all the difference for the Reds. In one move, Slot would be losing a world-class striker and replacing him with someone who has already stolen the headlines in a Liverpool shirt.

So, although Haaland and Alvarez’s failure should act as a firm warning, there is a way for Liverpool to march towards a successful title defence whilst enjoying both of their big-money strikers.

Big Beto upgrade: Everton have already sold "the new Lukaku"

Everton blanked against Aston Villa at the weekend, but David Moyes must be pleased with his side’s start to the 2025/26 campaign.

An exodus was needed this summer, but the dramatic upheaval on the blue side of the River Mersey emphasised the need for accuracy in the transfer market.

Seven points from four Premier League games and a three-match unbeaten run have given the Toffees a platform, but it could have been three wins from three save for some shoddy finishing against the struggling Villa.

Beto was the culprit.

Beto misfires against Aston Villa

He’s come on leaps and bounds under Moyes’ wing, has Beto, but there’s no doubt that the Bissau Guinean striker has flaws within his game, and is prone to ghosting on different occasions across the campaign.

The 6 foot 4 forward fits Moyes’ mould: he is a tower of a talisman and commands the skies well; he has scored twice across five games in all competitions this season, three of which came from the starting whistle.

But Beto has only one goal in the Premier League, and could maybe have tripled his tally against Aston Villa, horribly scuffing a chance into a yawning net when played through by Iliman Ndiaye.

Thierno Barry was signed in the summer to add competition at number nine, but the 22-year-old is raw and not yet settled within the harsh climes of the Premier League.

It’s at moments like these that some fans might wish for another goalscoring option.

Everton will regret selling Beto upgrade

It’s a shame that Moise Kean didn’t prove to be a talismanic figure in Toffee blue.

Kean initially started his professional career with a weight of expectation, such a prodigy he was billed. Things got a little stagnant, though, it’s got to be said, with his £25m move from Juventus to Everton aged 19 doing little to further his career.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

Under Farhad Moshiri’s ownership, Everton signed Kean in 2019, but it’s not unfair to stress that the Italian failed to bring it together, scoring twice in the Premier League across 32 fixtures, picking up a red card too. The criticism lacing Moshiri’s dysfunctional reign is thick, but a move for Kean spoke of ambition, for sure.

But it didn’t work out, and after a spin of loan spells, Kean found himself back in Turin for a similar figure that Everton first paid for him. Thus, financially, it wasn’t a shocking blow, but the player’s struggles certainly suggest it was a poor signing.

Perhaps viewed as the successor to Romelu Lukaku’s former place in Everton’s team, Kean was one of many misfires in the transfer market during that long and interminable period of struggle, and his recent exploits back in Italy highlight what might have been in England.

Because Kean struggled even after leaving, peripheral at Juventus. But a move to Fiorentina has resurrected his career and then some, having scored 25 goals and supplied three assists across all competitions at La Viola last season.

It’s clear that Kean needed that return to his home country to develop into the player he is today, but Everton saw something and failed to make it work.

Powerful and clinical and with a “scary” physicality, as has been noted by reporter Carlo Garganese, Kean very much might have been Everton’s next version of Lukaku. Indeed, two years after the Belgian’s mammoth sale to Manchester United, it’s not improbable that Lukaku’s name was brought up during internal discussions ahead of the successful bid for the teenager.

His dribbling has come on so much. Data from FBref reveals Kean ranks among the top 14% of strikers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored, but also the top 8% for successful take-ons per 90, demonstrating an athleticism that Lukaku used to project with such strength on his opponents.

It’s something Moyes might have made good use of in this current Everton setting. The Merseysiders and their boss have pulled away from pragmatic perceptions and have shaped into a modern hybrid form.

Fifth Everton sit in the xG (expected goals) rankings for the Premier League campaign so far. Early days, of course, but evidence of growth and newfound attacking impetus.

The caveat being they have only scored five goals, highlighting room for improvement in the ball-striking department. It’s not an egregious deficit by any means, but a striker of Kean’s ability could add that difference to stretch Everton even higher up the table.

Lukaku, in his Everton form, would surely be riding the crest of a wave right now, and Kean could be too. The Azzurri star, after all, was named ‘the new Lukaku’ upon his big move to Goodison Park.

So Moyes and Everton have Beto, and that’s not all that bad. The 26-year-old is a strong and sturdy striker; he commands the box well, tussling with defenders and knocking headers down to his teammates. He is a better player for Moyes’ appointment.

Only, Kean is clearly a cut above, and while it’s hopeless to rue missed opportunities to develop stars who weren’t shining at the time, it must be a frustration for the new board.

Whether Barry comes good is another question, and the Frenchman certainly has the potential to overtake Beto and set his marker as Everton’s starring striker, but he’s not there yet, and Kean could have been a difference-maker this season.

Now worth more than Grealish: Everton must regret selling "phenomenal" star

Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa brought into sharp focus Everton’s lack of quality strikers, so they must regret selling this phenomenal striker.

Jon Lewis leaves role as England Women's head coach

Departure follows dismal T20 World Cup and Women’s Ashes campaigns

Jon Lewis has left his role as England Women’s head coach.Amid a review of England’s 16-0 Women’s Ashes defeat in Australia, which followed their group-stage exit at the T20 World Cup in October, the ECB announced on Friday that Lewis had left his position.”I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as England Women’s head coach,” Lewis said in a statement. “Unfortunately I won’t be able to finish this incredibly challenging but enjoyable job of developing this young team, whilst winning and growing the women’s game in this country.”I have worked tirelessly with this group of young players to develop their skills and understanding of modern-day white ball cricket, whilst still making good progress in 2024, winning 83% of all our games.”I am proud that we have seen unprecedented bumper crowds in 2023 and 2024 and I am determined to continue to help drive women’s cricket forward in whatever comes next for me. I wish all the players the best and thank them for letting me be part of their journeys.”Related

Clare Connor, ECB managing director, England Women, and deputy chief executive officer – who announced the review in the immediate aftermath of the Ashes whitewash – said: “I’d like to thank Jon for all he has given in his time as head coach.”He came into the role after a very challenging period for cricketers during the pandemic, and one of his priorities was to create the right conditions for the team to flourish and develop. Under his leadership the team held off Australia to draw a thrilling 2023 Women’s Ashes – attracting record crowds with an entertaining brand of cricket – while the team’s consistent success in bilateral cricket included a remarkable eight consecutive ODI series wins for which he should take real credit.”While the recent ICC Women’s T20 World Cup and Women’s Ashes in Australia have been disappointing, there is no doubt about the talent we have available and we will look to appoint a successor shortly. We must be ready for an exciting summer of international cricket and to challenge for two World Cups over the next 15 months, including the T20 World Cup in this country next year.”Lewis had been in charge since November 2022, during which time England Women won 52 of their 73 matches. He has just finished his third season as coach of UP Warriorz, who finished bottom of the WPL table in the 2025 season. While the drawn 2023 Ashes series, in which England won both white-ball legs, was seen as a mark of progress for the team, they took a backward step when a hapless fielding performance against West Indies cost them a place in the knockout phase of the T20 World Cup and the recent Ashes drubbing brought Lewis’s position under intense scrutiny, particularly once the review was announced, details of which are yet to be made public.Charlotte Edwards is a potential successor for Jon Lewis•Nathan Stirk/ECB via Getty Images

Speaking immediately after the Ashes Test at the MCG, which Australia won by an innings and 122 runs to keep England winless for the entire multi-format series, Lewis said he felt “I haven’t finished the job that I came here to do”, indicating a desire to stay on in the role. His comments earlier in the tour raised eyebrows when, after England had slumped to their fifth defeat of the tour in the second T20I, he suggested that Australia’s active, outdoors lifestyle was more conducive to producing athletes. The England team had already become embroiled in controversy after former team-mate turned commentator Alex Hartley had said that a handful of players were “letting the team down” with their fitness levels. Lewis repeatedly defended the squad’s training efforts, although Connor said all aspects of their preparation – including physical and mental – would be examined in the review, which has sought input from players. The ECB said it would provide an update on plans to appoint a new head coach “in due course” with visits by West Indies and India looming, followed by the 50-over World Cup in India and a home T20 World Cup next year.Charlotte Edwards stands out as a potential successor, having just coached Mumbai Indians to their second WPL title in three years.Edwards, the former England captain, offered to help the ECB in its review while not ruling herself out from taking over as head coach should the role become available.Having initially said she was interested in taking the England Women’s job in 2022, Edwards decided against applying, choosing to focus on her burgeoning franchise coaching career with Southern Brave in the Women’s Hundred and WBBL side Sydney Sixers, as well as leading Southern Vipers in the domestic women’s competition, which included a T20 competition named in her honour.Edwards has led Southern Vipers to five titles, including two Charlotte Edwards Cup victories – the second as part of a domestic double in 2023 – and Southern Brave to three Women’s Hundred finals, winning the 2023 edition. She also led Sydney Sixers to the WBBL final in her first season in charge in 2022-23. She has been appointed head coach of Hampshire Women under the new domestic structure in England and Wales beginning this season. Before becoming England Women’s head coach, Lewis had been ECB’s elite pace bowling coach since 2021, working alongside the England Men’s Test and white-ball teams. He was previously head coach of the Young Lions, having joined the ECB from the coaching staff at Sussex. As a player, Lewis took more than 1,200 professional wickets in a 19-year professional career at Gloucestershire, Surrey and Sussex, and played 15 times for his country.

Everton ready to trigger £26m release clause for int'l full-back in January

Everton are now reportedly willing to trigger the £26m release clause in an “incredibly solid” player’s contract when the January transfer window opens.

Everton look to build on impressive start

The Blues are back in Premier League action this weekend after the September international break, with Aston Villa making the trip to the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

After the disappointment of losing at Leeds United in the opening game of the season, Everton have responded impressively with two wins in the league, with new signing Jack Grealish catching the eye with his performances, and David Moyes continuing to thrive in his second stint as manager.

Villa will pose a greater threat to the Blues than Brighton and Wolves did, however, with Unai Emery’s side among the teams with genuine European aspirations, despite not yet impressing in 2025/26, failing to win any of their opening three matches.

Another win for Everton on Saturday, against strong opposition, would further suggest that an exciting campaign is on the cards for them, and now a player has been linked with a move to the club in January.

Everton willing to trigger £26m release clause for full-back

According to a report from Spain, Everton have decided to trigger Espanyol right-back Omar El Hilali’s £26m release clause in the next transfer window. The clause has now increased to £26m after El Hilali made his debut for Morocco during the international break.

The Blues tried to sign the 22-year-old in the summer window, but failed to get a deal over the line, however, it looks as though he is still a priority target, with The Friedkin Group not messing around when it comes to transfers of late.

El Hilali is a young player with a huge amount of promise, but also someone who could come straight in as a starter for Everton, providing great competition for Jake O’Brien at right-back from the off.

The Morocco international has racked up a total of 90 appearances for Espanyol, and 44 in La Liga, also registering seven assists in that time and showing that he can shine in one of Europe’s toughest leagues.

He's like Grealish: Everton have found their best teen talent since Rooney

Everton’s new signing could be their best teen prospect since Wayne Rooney.

ByWill Miller Sep 12, 2025

El Hilali has also been lauded by scout Jacek Kulig, who described him as “incredibly solid” during last season, helping his side finish 14th in La Liga.

Still only 22, Everton would be bringing in a long-term acquisition in El Hilali – one who should only improve as a player as the years pass, and he would be a different option to O’Brien, arguably adding more natural attacking quality than the Irishman, who is still a centre-back by trade.
