Jofra Archer's return set to headline low-key series

As SA20 pauses for quick-fire ODI series, will the crowds turn up to Bloemfontein?

Big PictureExcuse me while I interrupt myself, as the great Murray Walker once put it, but we’ve got an international series about to butt into the schedule in South Africa. A nation newly energised by the successful launch of the SA20 will be putting that tournament on ice for a week to host the team that bailed on them two years ago – when what some might term a convenient Covid outbreak forced the last-minute cancellation of England’s three pre-Christmas ODIs.Notwithstanding the fast-approaching World Cup in India this year, and the need for international teams to reacquaint themselves with the rigours of 50-over cricket, this bizarre stop-over rather epitomises the current moribund state of bilateral international cricket – a format that has long been beholden to the whims of TV contracts, but which has been made to feel extra extraneous in recent months.England’s last ODI series (do you recall any details? Thought not) was a benighted affair in Australia, similarly shoehorned into the schedule as part of the Covid backlog, while this month’s explosion of franchise T20 leagues offers the other side of a potential pincer movement on the international game. Will the crowds flock to Bloemfontein and Kimberley as they have done to Newlands and Paarl these past few weeks, or will they park their affections and wait for their new favourite tournament to resume? The early indications of ticket sales are not promising. For a country that has openly sacrificed its international calendar in order to pivot to the franchise world, this feels like a significant test case.Related

Jofra Archer rates himself 'about 80%' fit ahead of England comeback

Bavuma will captain South Africa for as long as team-mates and management want

There is, however, at least one good reason to fork out the R250 for entry this week. The return of Jofra Archer after nearly two years out of the England set-up is a joyous development, even if South Africa’s batters might not feel quite as enthused at the prospect. One of the purest talents in world cricket has been through the wringer since twin elbow operations in 2021, and last year’s back stress fracture was a cruelly timed blow, just when it seemed he was stepping up for a comeback. In his own assessment, he is currently “80 percent fit”, but Archer’s displays in the SA20 have sent a strong message that his mechanism is no less primed to purr for the indignities he’s endured. He’s got a big year ahead of him, with another Ashes and World Cup double-header to work towards, and in England terms it starts right here.Who knows quite where England are at in general terms, however. As the newly-crowned double World Champions, they can assemble for these contests with rather more strut than they displayed in a confused home campaign last summer, when Jos Buttler and Matthew Mott were still bedding in as the new captain/coach alliance, and when South Africa not only swiped the T20I series but were well placed to pinch the ODIs too when rain interrupted Quinton de Kock’s best efforts in the series decider at Headingley.Either way, the settled England side that, by this stage of the 2019 World Cup cycle, was on cruise control is a thing of the past. All manner of questions will need answering in the coming months, and only a handful of them are likely to be addressed in the next three days.Is Jason Roy’s slump in form terminal? Is Dawid Malan the long-term answer at No.3, or just a placeholder while Joe Root focuses on Bazball? Do Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali have another World Cup in them? And can Mott get through a press conference without being obliged to address the elephant who is most emphatically not in the room, Ben Stokes? Just as the T20 World Cup XI came together as if on the back of a packet of Tepal Tea in Pakistan, so you suspect the 50-over side won’t have any look of permanence until the final approach in October.South Africa, by contrast, have a pretty good idea of their best XI – their major issue would appear to be settling on a style in which to unleash it. Temba Bavuma, their captain, acknowledged on the eve of the series that England’s recent Test exploits would serve as an inspiration of sorts, although seeing as he added that South Africa’s interpretation of Bazball might include “blocking the s*** out of it”, it sounds as though their tactics are a work in progress.Either way, the form of Heinrich Klaasen in the SA20 bodes well as an example for the rest of the side to follow, and if de Kock has been short of a few runs, the class he exudes at the top of the order remains permanent. And lest we forget, in this era of cross-pollinated red- and white-ball mindsets, it was an attack spearheaded by Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rababa and Lungi Ngidi that got the better of England’s Test team at Lord’s last summer – the only match in 10 that Stokes’ men have so far lost. A repeat of that showing, and the Free State crowds might just decide that there’s legs in the international game yet.Temba Bavuma drives during a net session at Bloemfontein•Getty Images

Form guideSouth Africa LLWLW (last five Tests, most recent first)
England LLLWLIn the spotlightDespite his conspicuous lack of Test centuries, Temba Bavuma has arguably been South Africa’s best red-ball batter for the best part of two years. His white-ball form, on the other end, has been a work in progress, to put it kindly – and as his country’s captain, that’s a particularly tricky state of affairs. He did manage to reach three figures against India this time last year, but his form fell off a cliff in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup (and the less said about their eventual elimination, the better). Arguably he would be better off moving up to the top of the order, to emulate his T20 role, but right now, he just needs runs from whichever berth he so chooses. All eyes will be on Archer, of course, but this series is just a staging post in his gradual return from injury. For Jason Roy, by contrast, there’s huge amounts at stake in the coming three games, as he strains every sinew for a semblance of form. His returns for Paarl Royals in the SA20 have been desperate, with a top-score of 33 in eight matches. Team-mate Jos Buttler, meanwhile, has only been dismissed for less than that total on two occasions – while his stiff-limbed displays in the Australia ODIs realised 39 runs from 61 balls. For seven years, Roy was the totem of Morgan’s rebooted England team, fearlessly gung-ho at the top of the order and never afraid to fail in his determination that the collective should succeed. More recently, however, he’s batted as if a trapdoor has opened up beneath his feet. With the coming man Will Jacks tearing it up in the SA20, if anyone needs a dose of the Bazball mindset, it is Roy.Team newsBavuma says he knows his best XI, but he isn’t giving away much just yet. Realistically, the one true question is whether Janneman Malan should continue at the top of the order, or Reeza Hendricks ought to get a crack there instead – although his awkward knock for JSK at the Wanderers on Tuesday, when Faf du Plessis all but lapped him in a 157-run opening stand, suggests he might be better off waiting his turn.South Africa (possible) 1. Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Janneman Malan, 3 Temba Bavuma (capt), 4 Aiden Markram, 5 Heinrich Klaasen, 6 David Miller, 7 Wayne Parnell, 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Sisanda Magala/Lungi Ngidi, 10 Tabraiz Shamsi, 11 Anrich NortjeHarry Brook, seemingly a veteran across formats already, is poised to complete his full set of England caps when he’s handed his ODI debut. And while Archer’s return is the dominant item on the agenda, Ben Duckett’s first 50-over appearance in six years is also anticipated, given that Phil Salt has been feeling under the weather this week. Reece Topley, like Archer, may not play all three games as he works his way back from the ankle injury that ended his World Cup hopes.England: 1 Jason Roy, 2 Phil Salt / Ben Duckett, 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Jos Buttler (capt & wk), 5 Harry Brook, 6 Moeen Ali, 7 Sam Curran, 8 Jofra Archer, 9 Chris Woakes, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Reece Topley / Olly StoneHarry Brook is set to make his ODI debut•Getty Images

Pitch and conditionsBloemfontein boasts the biggest outfield in South Africa. There have been thunderstorms in the lead-up to the match but the weather on Friday is set fair, and due to be a sweltering 31 degrees.Stats and trivia If selected, Jofra Archer will be playing his first international match since the T20I tour of India in March 2021. He’s missed a total of 84 England games since then – 24 Tests, 21 ODIs and 39 T20Is. South Africa have won an impressive 16 of their 24 previous ODIs in Bloemfontein, including eight of their last nine, dating back to 2005. And yet, astonishingly, England have never lost in four attempts at the venue. Bloemfontein was the scene of their solitary win in the 6-1 rout in 1996, as well as a nine-wicket cruise in 2000, and a gripping tie in Kevin Pietersen’s famous return to South Africa in 2005. Quotes”We have a World Cup nine months away now and we don’t have loads of games before that. They’re all really vital games to give guys chances and exposure to the ODI format and give guys an opportunity to try and nail down a place in the XI or 15 for the World Cup.”
“We are South Africans. We have our way of thinking, our way of doing things. There’s nothing wrong with us taking a little bit from England, putting it together and seeing what comes about. With the personnel we have, guys going out and expressing themselves – if that equates to a South African ‘Bazball’ way of playing, to use a stupid term – then so be it. If it means we are going to go out there and block the s*** out of the ball, so be it.”

Yorkshire sign Shai Hope for first three rounds of County Championship

He will cover for club captain Shan Masood, who has been called up for Pakistan’s limited-over series against New Zealand

Yorkshire have announced the signing of West Indies batter Shai Hope for the first three rounds of the County Championship. The 29-year-old, who also provides an option as wicketkeeper, will cover for Yorkshire club captain Shan Masood whose arrival has been delayed after being called up for Pakistan’s limited-over series against New Zealand. With five T20Is and five ODIs, Masood may only be available from the middle of May.They had also signed New Zealand’s Neil Wagner for their first ten County Championship fixtures but the left-arm quick was ruled out of his stint after tearing his hamstring during the Test series with Sri Lanka. An attempt to sign Pakistani batter Saud Shakeel has been delayed because of visa issues. As such, the acquisition of Hope is a welcome boost on the eve of Yorkshire’s season opener against Leicestershire at home. He has fond memories of playing at Headingley, after becoming the first player to score two hundreds in a first-class match at the ground when West Indies beat England there in August 2017. After scoring 147 in the first innings, he finished 118 not out in the second, leading his side to a successful chase of 322 for a famous five-wicket win.Hope arrives straight from the Caribbean, having only just returned home from West Indies’ ODI series against South Africa which finished 1-1. Hope’s 128 not out in the second ODI earned him the Player-of-the-series award. On the signing, Darren Gough, Yorkshire’s managing director said: “He is a great signing. He brings so much experience – one thing we are lacking is just a little bit of experience so he just gives us that and comes into the squad for this first game.””We felt we needed just the one experienced face in and we went for Shai. He has been playing well for the West Indies in one-day matches, he has got a record of playing Test cricket – he had his two hundreds at Headingley before for the West Indies.””Hope has literally just got home a few days ago so it is a straight turn around. He will have to adjust to playing red ball, from white ball but he is a fantastic player and it’s good to have someone of his quality to come in at short notice for three games.”

Celtic are now worried that their most valuable player will exit in 2025

Celtic are now fearful that a “very strong” player will leave the club in the summer transfer window, as clamour look to retain his services moving forward.

Celtic preparing for Rangers clash

The Hoops have had all week to prepare for the visit of rivals Rangers in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday lunchtime, as they look to edge one step closer to winning yet another league crown under Brendan Rodgers.

Victory for Celtic would put them 19 points clear at the top of the table, and the fact that their opponents went through a gruelling 120 minutes against Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday evening can only play into their hands, in terms of having more energy.

Celtic managerBrendanRodgerscelebrates after winning the League Cup

Away from the weekend action, the Hoops continue to be linked with moves for summer signings, with Mathias Kvistgaarden still seen as a transfer target. The Brondby forward has been mentioned as a target in the recent past, and it looks like their interest hasn’t gone away.

On the flip side, Celtic could be at risk of losing certain players in the summer, with Cameron Carter-Vickers seen as a potential option for Everton, with manager David Moyes eyeing him up as a good option. Now, a fresh update has dropped over his future.

Celtic worried "very strong" Carter-Vickers will leave

According to a new update from Football Insider‘s Pete O’Rourke, Celtic are increasingly “concerned” that Carter-Vickers will leave the club at the end of the season.

He states that the Hoops will be “demanding big money” if he does decide he wants a fresh challenge, and there is worry among fanbase that “losing him would weaken the team” despite what fee they get for their most valuable player.

Carter-Vickers has been a defensive rock for Celtic down the years, both on loan and after signing permanently from Tottenham, so to lose him at the peak of his powers would be a big blow for Rodgers. Still only 27, the USA international can continue to be at his best for at least the next three or four years, with former Hoops teammate Carl Starfelt once saying of him: “Cameron is a really good player.

“I’ve enjoyed playing with him since he came. I feel like we have a good chemistry on and off the pitch. We see many situations the same way. He’s a very strong player. You always know what you will get from him. He’s easy to play with.”

On the plus side for Celtic, if Carter-Vickers does say he wants to leave this summer, he is contracted at the club until 2029, putting them in an extremely strong bargaining position.

Celtic hit the jackpot on Ange signing who's now worth as much as Tierney

It would allow the Hoops to demand big money for one of their most important players, rather than losing him on the cheap, but ultimately, retaining his services beyond this year still takes precedence.

Van Nistelrooy 2.0: Man Utd offered chance to sign "best CF on the market"

As the great Sir Alex Ferguson once stated, ‘attack wins you games, defence wins you titles’. For where Manchester United are right now, titles are a pipe dream – they simply need to get winning.

For momentum to be built then under the new Ruben Amorim regime, the Portuguese coach needs to be handed the appropriate attacking tools, having inherited a youthful and inconsistent forward line upon his arrival late last year.

Bruno Fernandes celebrates for Manchester United

As it stands, the Red Devils’ top scorer in all competitions is Bruno Fernandes, with 16 goals. The Portuguese playmaker – who has been operated in a deep-lying role under Amorim – also leads the way in the Premier League for United, with eight goals on that front.

The 30-year-old skipper also ended last season as the club’s top scorer in the top flight, alongside Rasmus Hojlund, with just ten league goals. Not since United’s last title-winning campaign – where Robin van Persie fired in 26 times – has a player reached the 20-goal mark in the league at Old Trafford.

Therein lies the crux of the problem, and with Hojlund and summer signing Joshua Zirkzee scoring just 14 goals between them in all competitions in 2024/25 to date, a new centre-forward must surely be a priority ahead of next season…

Latest on Man Utd's search for striker

The decision to splash out on £64m man Hojlund and £36.5m man Zirkzee had seemingly been with an eye on looking to the future, with the club having abandoned the previous approach of short-term, veteran signings.

Indeed, United had acquired a raft of temporary solutions in the form of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, Cristiano Ronaldo, Odion Ighalo and Wout Weghorst – only a then 24-year-old Romelu Lukaku seemingly bucks the trend in the post-Ferguson era.

With that in mind, the time has come for the Red Devils to finally acquire a centre-forward at the peak of their powers, having seemingly opted against moving for Erik ten Hag’s first-choice target, Harry Kane, back in the summer of 2023.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to Sky Sports reporter Sacha Tavolieri, that lengthy wait could well be coming to an end, with United having been handed an opening to sign Napoli sensation, Victor Osimhen.

As per Tavolieri, the Nigerian marksman – who is currently on loan at Galatasaray – has been put on the market by the Serie A side, ahead of the summer, with the Red Devils said to have followed the 26-year-old ‘closely’ across ‘several seasons’.

Galatasaray's VictorOsimhencelebrates scoring a goal that was later disallowed

The report states that the Old Trafford side could ‘take advantage’ of this opportunity to finally pounce, with Osimhen perhaps representing the answer to Amorim’s prayers.

How United could sign their next Ruud van Nistelrooy

With Lukaku only lasting two seasons – and with Robin van Persie failing to maintain his prolific first-term form – it could be argued that United haven’t had a truly reliable or consistent number nine since the days of Ruud van Nistelrooy. Indeed, Dimitar Berbatov was never truly the main man, excluding a Golden Boot-winning 2010/11 season.

As for Van Nistlerooy, the prolific Dutchman was an instant hit following his belated arrival to Ferguson’s ranks in 2001, with both parties having been made to wait after the then-PSV Eindhoven star had seen an initial move collapse a year earlier, due to an ACL injury.

The £19m man – who was 25 by the time he made his Premier League debut against Fulham – shook off any injury fears by going on to score 150 goals in just 219 games for the club in all competitions, including 95 goals in just 150 top-flight outings.

United had signed a player entering his prime who had proven himself already in Holland, with 77 goals in 90 games for PSV, with the same scenario potentially set to occur with regard to Osimhen.

Like Van Nistelrooy, the in-demand striker has had injury concerns in the past, although those should certainly not hold United back from making a move, not least when he has scored 26 goals in 30 games in Turkey this term.

In 253 career games, the one-time Lille man has already scored 140 times at senior level, again emulating Van Nistelrooy in representing a proven, ready-made centre-forward option. Like with the Netherlands star, his lack of prior Premier League experience should not be too much of a concern.

At 26, Osimhen – who is only slightly older than the current Leicester City boss was when he made the move of his own – would represent both a player for the present and the future. A player with room still left to grow, yet while having already delivered elsewhere on a consistent basis.

Much like the then-British-record capture of Van Nistelrooy, it would take a pretty penny to prise Osimhen from Naples, considering his £62m release clause, although for arguably the “best striker on the market” – as per Statman Dave – he’d certainly be worth the investment.

Indeed, at a time when United can no longer wait for the likes of Hojlund, Zirkzee or even young Chido Obi to find their feet, Osimhen could finally be the striker to come in and hit the ground running – just as ‘Ruud’ did all those years ago.
