The staggering waste of money United made to have Ashworth in the role for just five months was revealed in the club's latest financial figures. The release stated: "Exceptional items for the quarter were a cost of £14.5 million ($18m). This relates to costs associated with the departure of former men’s first team manager Erik ten Hag and various members of football staff." Previous accounts showed that the club spent £10.4m ($13m) to sack Ten Hag and the rest of his coaching staff in October, meaning that the club spent £4.1m ($5m) in total to release Ashworth from his contract with Newcastle and hire him in July before firing him in December.

The Red Devils' co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe had hailed Ashworth as "a 10/10 sporting director" while pursuing him but their relationship soon deteriorated after the sporting director told the media he had not had any say in the decision to keep Ten Hag in charge over the summer. It was widely reported that Ratcliffe was disappointed with Ashworth's recommendations for the Dutchman's successor, favouring the appointment of an English coach such as Gareth Southgate or Graham Potter. The club's CEO Omar Berrada instead led the move to appoint Ruben Amorim and Ashworth did not make any statement when the Portuguese was unveiled.

DID YOU KNOW?

The accounts show that United were forced to pay £37.6m in net finance costs compared to just £0.3m from the previous year. This was due to "an unfavorable swing in foreign exchange rates". The club also experienced a 12 per cent drop in revenue due to the decline in broadcasting revenue after missing out on Champions League qualification. However, United increased commercial revenue by 18 per cent, driven by its new shirt sponsorship deal with Snapdragon.

The accounts stated that the club "remains committed to, and in compliance with, both the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules and UEFA’s Financial Fair Play Regulations". The club's balance sheet was also strengthened by an £80m cash investment from Ratcliffe's INEOS group. A club source said the results "demonstrate the underlying operational strength of the club, while highlighting the financial challenges we are facing".

Inter Miami defeated Sporting Kansas City 3-1 (4-1 on aggregate) in leg two of their CONCACAF Champions Cup tie Tuesday evening. Round 1 of the competition saw the win both legs, home and away, as they advanced to the Round of 16 in the competition.

It was a dominant performance from Javier Mascherano's men, with Lionel Messi himself opening the scoring. The Argentine banged in a rather stupendous volley, hitting home a Luis Suarez cross just 19 minutes into the match.

Two more goals followed in quick succession, with Tadeo Allende and Luis Suarez scoring in first half stoppage-time to give them a four-goal lead on aggregate at the break, putting the tie to bed before the second half even began.

Sporting did gain a goal back in the second half, with MLS veteran Memo Rodriguez finding the back of the net via a wicked deflection off defender Maximiliano Falcon. However, it was not the spark they were hoping it would be down four goals and another goal never arrived.

Sporting's attempt at a comeback was stalled by some stellar midfield play from the , but ultimately, they fell flat and played uninspired as the whistle closed in on them. It was Sporting's fourth-straight Champions Cup loss across all years of participation in the tournament.

In the next round of the competition, Inter Miami will take on Jamaican Premier League side Cavalier SC. The island club has won their domestic title three times in club history, with their win in the 2023-24 season being their latest achievement. They were also victors of the 2023-24 CONCACAF Caribbean Cup.

Lionel Messi:

In cup competitions, you need your stars to have moments where they lift the team. Messi did that in both games in this series.
He scored the winner in Leg 1 and followed it up with the opening strike — a brilliant volley — in Leg 2 to give them all the momentum needed to advance.

That's what a captain, and a star, does.

Onto the next round.

Getty Images SportTHE BIG LOSER

Peter Vermes:

After a big offseason where the club recruited MLS Cup-winning striker Dejan Joveljic, and brought in a high-profile attacking Designated Player in Manu Garcia, their attack was rather lifeless across both legs.

Both central defenders in Robert Voloder and Daniel Rosero were picked apart by the Miami attack, but if Sporting's stars were able to standout and compete at all, things may have ended differently.

Ultimately, though, this one is on Vermes. He didn't get the tactics right and failed to get the most out of his shiny new attackers.

86% duels lost: Rodgers must drop Celtic player who was worse than Hatate

Celtic moved to three points clear of the Scottish Premiership table on Saturday after they secured an emphatic 4-1 victory over Hearts away from Parkhead.

The Hoops took advantage of Aberdeen’s 2-1 defeat to St Mirren to go clear at the top after being level on points with the Dons for the entire season so far, but sitting above them on goal difference.

Brendan Rodgers’ side now have a gap between them and second and will be hoping to extend that in the coming weeks to provide them with a healthy cushion to potentially rotate the squad and rest players for other competitions.

The Scottish giants struggled at times in the first half against Hearts, however, as the home side pushed to score the opening goal and tested Kasper Schmeichel with a few early efforts.

Celtic’s Danish colossus was equal to everything, though, and that allowed the Hoops to push on in the second half and secure all three points, thanks to goals from Kyogo Furuhashi, Nicolas Kuhn, and Adam Idah (x2).

It was a very impressive second half display and one that included a number of superb performances across the park from several players.

Celtic's top performers against Hearts

The man who opened the scoring, Kyogo, was a constant threat at the top end of the pitch with his movement in behind to create chances for himself.

He scored the first goal, rifling in after the ball dropped kindly to him, and had four shots on target in total, also missing two ‘big chances’, which shows that he was constantly testing Craig Gordon.

Cameron Carter-Vickers returned to the team at centre-back and produced a dominant display for the Hoops, as he won seven of his eight duels and made six clearances.

Kuhn, of course, was another player who excelled. As well as his thumping strike into the top corner, the German winger created one ‘big chance’ and completed all three of his attempted dribbles on the right flank, in another terrific showing in the Premiership.

As you can see in the table above, several other players also starred in various statistics, with Callum McGregor’s creativity and Auston Trusty’s defensive intelligence on show.

However, there were also some players for Celtic who struggled at times and did not showcase the best of their abilities in the win over Hearts on Saturday.

One Hoops whiz who did not give the best account of himself was central midfielder Reo Hatate, who started alongside the captain and Arne Engels.

Reo Hatate's performance against Hearts

The Japan international played the full 90 minutes of the 4-1 win and was unable to get in on the act with a goal or an assist to show for his efforts in the match.

He was involved, in part, in the third goal from Idah. It was his failed attempt to dribbled past a defender that, fortunately, allowed Paulo Bernardo to slip the Ireland international through on goal on the edge of the box.

The 27-year-old did, however, create one ‘big chance’ in that match and was not rewarded with an assist, which suggests that he was unfortunate not to record a goal involvement.

His work out of possession left a lot to be desired, though, as the central midfielder lost five of his six ground duels and both of his aerial contests, which shows that the Hearts players found it far too easy to get the better of him in physical battles.

As you can see in the table above, creating high-quality opportunities for his teammates and not being rewarded with assists has become a theme for the midfielder, who has lost the majority of his duels in the division.

Hatate, despite being dominated by the Hearts players in his individual battles, was not the worst performer on the pitch for the Hoops, though, as Arne Engles was even worse in the middle of the park.

Why Rodgers must drop Arne Engels

The summer signing from Augsburg, who played twice for Belgium during the international break, has struggled for form in recent matches for the Hoops.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Rodgers must, now, finally bin the Belgian youngster from the starting XI to take him away from the spotlight and allow him to rest and come back with the motivation to win his place in the team back.

The 21-year-old lightweight started the 2-0 win over Kilmarnock before the break and struggled in that game, with one duel won and zero chances created in 63 minutes on the pitch.

Engels needed to bounce back with an improved display against Hearts from the start and was unable to do so, as the former Bundesliga starlet failed to impress for the second match running.

Meanwhile, Paulo Bernardo came off the bench and won 100% (2/2) of his duels, created a ‘big chance’, and provided an assist against the Jam Tarts.

As you can see in the table above, Engels offered very little to the team in and out of possession throughout the game, with zero chances created and zero tackles and interceptions.

He was also a lightweight in midfield, losing 86% of his duels, and these statistics show that it is time for Rodgers to drop him down to the bench for the clash with Club Brugge on Wednesday night, as he was easily beaten by defenders in battles and did little to help the team in the final third.

Hatate was, at least, able to create a ‘big chance’ for the team and was partially involved in Idah’s goal, and that is why Engels should be dropped ahead of the Japanese gem, with Bernardo given a chance to impress from the start after his strong cameo.

Collingwood: England players 'deserve medals, not criticism' after getting through Ashes series

Assistant coach fears damaging long-term effects of Covid bubbles on players

Aadam Patel26-Jan-2022Paul Collingwood believes that the Ashes were “one step too far” and that he is genuinely concerned about the long-term implications on the mental health of players that Covid bubbles are causing.Speaking in Barbados, where he is standing in for Chris Silverwood as head coach during England’s T20I series against West Indies, and on the island where he became England’s first ever World Cup-winning captain, Collingwood spoke explicitly on the realities of life in the bubble, and fears that the long-term impact of the pandemic on cricketers may be severely damaging.”I don’t think people have understood the impact and the effects that these bubbles have had,” Collingwood said. “Going to the Ashes off the back of a tough bubble in Dubai, I think was literally one step too far.”You can’t even explain what it’s like until you experience it. The simple fact is you cannot walk out of your front door and as soon as you’re told that you cannot do something as simple as going for a coffee, and you are penned in with the same guys. A lot of people will say ‘that must be fun’ and ‘you’ve got a lovely hotel’ [but] it hits you.Related

Ashes inquest: Who will captain England in the Caribbean?

“Take someone like Chris Woakes, the most loveable and down-to-earth guy. I have seen him in some serious mental states. We have seen Ben Stokes, someone we consider to be the most mentally tough cricketer in the world, being hit by this. I just hope there are no ramifications moving forward because when they come, they won’t be obvious next week or the week after. These are things that might come out down the line. That’s what scares me.”The England players underwent strict quarantine on the Gold Coast, and managed only two full days of match practice going into the first Test in Brisbane. Rory Burns’ golden duck set the tone for a dismal series as England were bowled out for 147 on the first day and went on to lose 4-0, hanging on for a draw in Sydney while nine wickets down.Despite England’s hammering, Collingwood stressed that England were facing an impossible task. “I reckon if you had given us the best England cricketers in the Ashes from the last 100 years and put them in the same environment that those boys have lived in over the past two years with the preparation that we had going into this Ashes even they wouldn’t have had a chance,” he said.Collingwood was part of the England squad that won the 2010-11 Ashes down under and understands precisely the physical and mental levels required to compete in Australia. He retired from international cricket after that winter and since then, England have failed to win a Test match in Australia, across 15 attempts.Collingwood was part of a group alongside Silverwood, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Woakes and Mark Wood that spent six weeks in a bubble in the UAE, before flying to Australia for their quarantine period on the Gold Coast and insisted that the lack of meaningful preparation only compounded the situation. And while he admitted that England made mistakes at the toss and in selection, he said that players should be praised for the efforts they had made in getting through the series in a strict environment, suggesting that Cricket Australia should have agreed to a compromise rather than packing five Tests into a short window during the pandemic.Collingwood has been touted as a possible successor for Chris Silverwood•Getty Images”You are burnt out from the start after your team has been in the intense environment of a World Cup,” he said. “It wasn’t club cricket that these players were coming from. Then there’s just two days of preparation before going into the Ashes. Australia is the hardest place to go to when you’ve got your best team in form and everyone’s playing consistently. We’ve seen that from the past.”Yes, we made mistakes, 100%. We made selection mistakes, we made toss mistakes, but the fact we actually turned up and agreed to a five-match Ashes series, the guys should be given medals for that. It would’ve been much better if we’d done two matches and then three next year. That would’ve been a great compromise.”But no, Australia were not bothered that they were going to receive an England team who were mentally fatigued, they just wanted to get the product out there. They just wanted the Ashes. These guys deserve medals, not criticism. They should be told ‘well done’ for even going. It’s the equivalent of the England football team being asked to go to a World Cup, then from that bubble into the Euros. Would you expect a performance from that scenario? It’s ludicrous.”Ahead of another hectic schedule for England in 2022, which includes tours to West Indies, Netherlands, Pakistan and Australia, as well as a jam-packed home summer and another T20 World Cup in October, Collingwood hopes that at least in England, they can operate without bubbles, but fears that the damage may already have been done – not just for England players but also for cricketers around the world.”I almost think it is too late to get these messages across,” he said. “These sorts of things should have been brought out in the middle of last summer. We saw the signs then when boys were fading, and it is not healthy for the game. This isn’t just us. We have obviously played the most amount of cricket, but it will catch up with other teams as well.”

Move over Saka: Arsenal’s 9/10 star was "insane" vs Sporting

Crisis, what crisis? Arsenal backed up their impressive performance against Nottingham Forest on Saturday with a stunning victory away to Sporting CP in the Champions League last night.

The North Londoners found themselves 3-0 in the first half, and despite a slightly sticky patch early in the second, eventually ran out 5-1 winners.

Unsurprisingly, poster boy Bukayo Saka was at his exceptional best, but there was another starter who was just as good.

Saka's performance in numbers

It’s become relatively simple in recent seasons: when Saka plays well, Arsenal play well, and that was certainly the case last night.

The Hale Ender was a constant threat off the right, providing a perfectly placed pass for Kai Havertz to double the team’s lead in the 22nd minute and putting away his penalty in the 65th to quell any concerns of a Sporting comeback.

It was a sublime display and one that impressed the Standard’s Simon Collings, who awarded him a 9/10 at full time and described him as ‘dangerous all night.’

Overall, Saka’s performance was sensational, but he wasn’t the only player who looked unreal on the right-hand side.

The Arsenal star who was as good as Saka

So, the good news for Arsenal is that there were several players who could claim to have been as good as Saka last night, but the one we are talking about is Jurrien Timber.

The Dutchman started at right-back for the second game in a row due to Ben White’s absence, and he was utterly superb.

The former Ajax star was more than capable in defence, playing a pivotal role in helping William Saliba deal with the incredibly dangerous Viktor Gyokeres, but he was also an incredibly useful attacking outlet.

Unsurprisingly, the talented international left quite an impression on the watching press, with The Athletic’s Aaron Catterson-Reid describing his display as “insane,” and Collings awarding him a 9/10 on the night.

Like the Gunners’ number seven, the Utrecht-born star’s statistics from the match were seriously impressive and backed up all the praise he’s received since.

Cummins on lifeless Rawalpindi pitch: 'It's clear they've made an effort to nullify our pace attack'

Australia captain says coming away with a draw in sub-continent conditions “not a bad result”

Alex Malcolm08-Mar-2022Australia’s captain Pat Cummins believes Rawalpindi’s lifeless pitch was specifically designed to nullify the visitors’ pace attack and that a draw was a good result despite his team only managing to take four wickets throughout the Test.Just 14 wickets fell in five days, with Pakistan piling up 476 for 4 declared and 252 for 0 across two innings before the game was called off with an hour to go on day five. Australia created some unwanted records with the bowlers claiming just three scalps across 239 overs, with Marnus’ Labuschagne’s direct hit run-out accounting for the fourth. Australia’s combined bowling average of 238.33 and strike-rate of 478 were the second-worst in 145 years of Test cricket, sitting only behind Pakistan’s efforts in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1958 when Sir Garfield Sobers made 365 not out.But Cummins was “not at all” concerned about his side’s lack of penetration across almost three full days of bowling on a surface he rated as one of the flattest he has ever played on.Related

Rawalpindi pitch gets 'below average' rating from ICC match referee

Imam: 'When we go to Australia, they don't make pitches consulting us'

Why did Pakistan sedate Rawalpindi, their liveliest Test pitch?

“Turning up to a pitch that’s probably not a traditional pitch you would get here in Rawalpindi, and it’s probably clear they’ve made an effort to try and nullify the pace bowling,” Cummins said post-match.”I think that’s a positive. And, sub-continent conditions, coming away with a draw it’s not a bad result.”Cummins was pleased with the efforts of his bowlers across the Test match and explained that once a result became impossible early on day five, he made a concerted effort to keep his key bowlers fresh for the next Test in Karachi by not over-bowling them.”I think we all tried different things,” Cummins said. “I think all the quick bowlers, although we’ve spent the best part of three days out in the field, I think we’ve all bowled around about 25, maximum 30 overs each, which in comparison to a lot of Australian Test matches is actually a pretty light workload.”Didn’t get a huge look at reverse swing this Test, but that might come into it later on. But I was really happy with how everyone went and everyone’s come through unscathed.”Imam-ul-Haq became just the 10th Pakistani batter to score twin centuries in a Test match. Incidentally the previous three players to do so, Younis Khan, Azhar Ali and Misbah-ul-Haq had all achieved the feat against Australia in the UAE 2014. Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Starc were also part of Australia’s attack in that series.Imam and Abdullah Shafique also set a new record for the most runs scored by an opener pair in partnership against Australia.Cummins admitted the Australians need to review their plans for them ahead of Karachi despite the batting-friendly conditions in Rawalpindi.”I thought the Pakistani batters batted really well the whole game,” Cummins said. “Got themselves in and then once they got themselves in they were able to just tick over the score.”We’ll spend the next couple days reviewing it having a look at maybe different plans ahead of Karachi, expecting probably different conditions as well.Cummins was pleased with the batting performance of his own side with the entire top four passing fifty for the first time since 2015 and Usman Khawaja and David Warner sharing a 156-run opening stand. Given the nature of the surface, there is a case to be made that Australia’s batters could have perhaps prospered even more than they did with none of the top four kicking onto big hundreds, and all four fell to mistakes mainly of their own doing. But given it was their first hit of the series and just the second instance of an Australian team making more than 450 in a Test in Asia since 2011, the skipper was satisfied with the performance.Aside from the pitch turning the game into a turgid high-scoring affair, Cummins was full of praise for the Rawalpindi people who had made Australia’s first Test in Pakistan in 24 years a touch more bearable.”They were fantastic the crowd,” he said.”Really passionate crowd for obviously Pakistan but really respectful and great for our players as well. I loved that. Every time we walked onto the field they’re chanting and trying to get waves from our players, which is awesome.”

Man City player ratings vs Nottingham Forest: Ederson howler proves costly as Erling Haaland hardly has a kick in dismal defeat that could have HUGE implications on Champions League qualification hopes

The Brazilian goalkeeper was easily beaten at his near post as the champions fell to their ninth loss of the season

Another week, another error by Ederson leading to a defeat for Manchester City. And it could not have come at a worse time in a worse game, as the Brazilian failed to properly guard his near post and allowed Callum Hudson-Odoi's shot to sneak past him in the 83rd minute, giving Nottingham Forest a valuable 1-0 win over the champions.

It was hugely disappointing for Ederson as earlier in the second half he had produced a tremendous save to prevent Hudson-Odoi curling into the far bottom corner. The save was on a similar level to Alisson's stunning performance against Paris Saint-Germain but, as has too often been the case with the City goalkeeper, a huge error was only around the corner.

City could have few complaints with the result in the end as they rarely troubled Nuno Espirito Santo's high-flyers, with Erling Haaland having a quiet game and Phil Foden looking hugely frustrated. Forest tightened their grip on third place and their push for Champions League football by moving five points clear of Chelsea in fifth. City, meanwhile, will be looking nervously over their shoulders after a ninth league defeat, triple the amount of losses they suffered last season.

Phil Foden (5/10):

Western Australia break 23-year Sheffield Shield drought as final ends in a draw

Aaron Hardie finished 174 not out before the game was called off at lunch on the final day

Alex Malcolm04-Apr-2022Western Australia claimed their first Sheffield Shield title in 23 years after a brilliant 174 not out from Aaron Hardie batted Victoria out of the match with the final called off as a draw at lunch on the final day at the WACA ground in Perth.WA finished 7 for 400 in their second innings at lunch on the final day as the teams agreed to end the contest, with the hosts claiming the title on bonus points after outperforming Victoria in the first 100 overs of the first two innings.Hardie made the third-highest score by a WA batter in a Shield final, but was edged out for player of the match honours by Sam Whiteman who was rewarded for his scores of 85 and 123.It is WA’s first Shield title since 1998-99, having only played in two losing finals inbetween. Head coach Adam Voges claimed the rare title treble after leading Perth Scorchers to the BBL title, and WA claiming the Marsh Cup 50-over crown and Shield title. He became just the second Australian men’s domestic coach to achieve the feat after Andrew McDonald did it in 2018-19.The final day petered out into a stalemate as WA had no intention of declaring after claiming the bonus point lead, with a draw enough to secure the title. WA took more wickets and made runs in the first 100 overs of each of the first two innings of the game to earn the right to win the title if the game ended in a draw. They scored 77 runs in 32 overs in the morning session of day five for the loss of just one wicket. Jon Holland trapped Joel Paris plumb lbw with a yorker-length delivery in the sixth over. Two overs later, Matt Kelly chipped Holland straight to midwicket where Will Pucovski grassed a very simple catch. That was the last hope Victoria had of bowling WA out and chasing something under 450 on the final day.Hardie continued his disciplined innings, looking more and more impenetrable as his vigil passed the six-hour mark.Aaron Hardie celebrates his 150•Getty ImagesHe brought up his maiden first-class 150 with a lovely square drive off Mitch Perry and began picking off WA’s highest ever scores in Shield finals. He launched Matt Short down the ground for his only six of the innings to go past Marcus Harris (158) and Tom Moody (162), but as lunch loomed it became clear the match was going to be called off and his chance to pass Adam Gilchrist (189) in second on the list behind Mike Veletta (262) began to fade.Kelly defended with ease to finish 21 off 85 balls while Hardie finished on 174 not out from 317 deliveries with 25 fours and a six. Victoria’s bowlers ran out of puff with Will Sutherland delivering a monumental 64.1 overs for the match to finish with six wickets, having been unfortunate not to have Hardie given lbw on 15 on the fourth afternoon.Lunch brought emotional celebrations from WA’s players and staff in the rooms with captain Shaun Marsh finally getting his hands on the Shield trophy, having debuted for WA in 2001 just two years after their last triumph in 1999.

Club now impressed after scouting Sheffield Wednesday ace ahead of January

One of Sheffield Wednesday’s future stars is being closely monitored by a Premier League giant ahead of the January transfer window, it has emerged, with the club having been impressed by him so far.

Sheffield Wednesday battling in Championship midtable

It has been a decidedly mixed start to the Championship season for Sheffield Wednesday this time around. The Hillsborough side sit in midtable with as many wins as they have losses, but are just five points outside the playoff places after three wins in their last five games.

Only just avoiding relegation last season, this time Danny Rohl’s outfit are already well clear of the drop zone, with 10 points separating them from Hull City in the bottom three, and they are set up to mount a push up the table for the remainder of the campaign, rather than looking worriedly over their shoulder.

There are more reasons to be optimistic in Sheffield too, with several young stars impressing and waiting in the wings at Hillsborough. Danny Rohl was quick to point to those talents last month, hinting at the club’s exciting future.

“I think we should also bring attention to the players from the academy who are taking the next step. I’m not sure when the last time [that happened] was.

“We have Di’Shon Bernard, Pierce Charles, Gabriel Otegbayo… they could be the future for this club. This is also the outcome from since I joined in the last year.”

Now though, a Premier League side are eyeing up one of those talents.

Liverpool monitoring Sheffield Wednesday talent after scouts impressed

That comes as a fresh report names Liverpool as one of the sides keeping a close eye on young goalkeeper Pierce Charles.

The former Manchester City youth academy product is yet to feature in the Championship this season, but has earned rave reviews for his performances in the Carabao Cup and has impressed for Northern Ireland since making his debut in the October international break, keeping three clean sheets in four outings.

And that has made clubs sit up and take notice of the teenager, with Sheffield Wednesday News revealing that “Liverpool are one of the teams to have made checks on 19-year-old Charles this season”.

Arne Slot’s side “are on the lookout for a young and exciting no.2 goalkeeper” and have watched Charles in action this season. Indeed, it is added that the scouts were left “impressed” by his performances for Northern Ireland.

Fortunately for Sheffield Wednesday and their fans, any move for the goalkeeper is unlikely to materialise in January should it do so at all, with Liverpool already well stocked in goal for this season and Giorgi Mamardashvili arriving in the summer from Valencia.

However, Caoimhín Kelleher has made no secret of his desire to leave the club, while Alisson has been subject to strong interest from Saudi Arabia in recent transfer windows, which could see a major changing of the guard at Anfield next summer. Could Charles be one that Liverpool come back for?

Capello went on a furious rant at Guardiola Accused him of ruining Italian football City manager chose to offer a "big hug" to CapelloFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

The former AC Milan and England manager accused Guardiola of "arrogance", and argued that his desire to "be the main character” has cost him several Champions League titles. Moreover, Capello opined that the Serie A clubs have lost their identity in an attempt to emulate his philosophy in Italy despite lacking the quality of players to execute them effectively.

He expressed his frustration, saying, "Even if it is no longer his fault, he has done a lot of harm to football. Because everyone spent ten years trying to copy him. It ruined Italian football, which lost its nature. I said: 'Stop, you don't have Guardiola's players'! There was also the absurd idea that that was all there was to do to play well."

When asked about Capello’s remarks during a press conference on Friday, Guardiola chose not to retaliate. Instead, he brushed off the criticism with a lighthearted response, offering a “big hug” to the Italian.

"I listen to everything that people say about me, everything, so be careful!" he joked with reporters.

Acknowledging Capello’s long-standing opinion on his tactics, Guardiola added: "This isn’t the first time Mr. Fabio Capello has said something like this. But I’m not good enough to ruin Italian football. Italian football is far bigger than the way we play. A big hug for Fabio, a big hug."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Guardiola may have shrugged off Capello’s remarks, the 2024-25 season has been a challenging one for Manchester City. Currently sitting fifth in the league standings, City find themselves battling for a Champions League qualification spot rather than contending for another title since they have already suffered an early exit from the European top-flight, failing to make it past the group stage for the first time since Guardiola took charge in 2016.

City's latest setback came in a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest last weekend. They will return to Premier League action this Saturday with a clash against Brighton. With their title hopes all but fading, Guardiola’s men will be eager to get back to winning ways and keep their grip on a top-four finish.
