Fabrizio Romano reports that super agent Jorge Mendes, who formerly represented Cristiano Ronaldo, has arrived in the UK to negotiate deals for his two clients Joao Felix and Ugarte. Chelsea are in talks with Atletico Madrid over a possible transfer for Felix. As for Ugarte, he has already agreed personal terms with United, however, they are now pushing to reduce the transfer fee. If PSG refuse to budge on their asking price, United will have to sanction some more sales before sealing the deal.

The Manchester club were also linked with a move for France international midfielder Youssouf Fofana, however, the player is reportedly interested in making a move to Serie A giants AC Milan.

Hashim Amla appointed Peshawar Zalmi batting mentor

The former South Africa captain will join Darren Sammy in a mentoring capacity for the upcoming season of the PSL

ESPNcricinfo staff30-Jan-2020Peshawar Zalmi have roped in Hashim Amla as a batting mentor for the upcoming edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The acquisition was announced on Twitter by the owner of the franchise, Javed Afridi. “His gracious presence in the PSL 5 festivity will not only adorn the Zalmi dugout but also inspire and craft the cricket skills of the emerging players in the squad,” Afridi said.

Amla never played in the PSL, but brings vast T20 experience to the Zalmi side. The South African played 44 T20Is for his country, including three T20 World Cups. He has played in several T20 leagues around the world, most notably for the Kings XI Punjab, with whom he enjoyed a particularly prolific season in 2017, smashing two hundreds and finishing as the franchise’s top scorer for the season.Amla joins former West Indies international Darren Sammy in a mentoring capacity, with the former Zalmi captain moving into a mentoring role, starting this season. Head coach Mohammad Akram, manager Arshad Khan and spin-bowling coach Saqlain Mushtaq are also part of the backroom staff for the side. Zalmi, who reached the last three PSL finals, will look to go one better on the runners-up result they managed last season, ultimately falling short to Sarfaraz Ahmed’s Quetta Gladiators.

Farke must now permanently ditch "frustrating" £90k-p/w Leeds talent

Leeds United will hope any murmurs that the wheels are coming off their promotion push are silenced when Daniel Farke's men visit Middlesbrough in the next intense round of Championship games.

Winless in their last three second tier clashes, it is vital that the Whites respond to their critics by confidently beating Michael Carrick's Boro on their own patch to stake a claim again that they deserve to win the league.

Whether Farke's men do end up returning to the Premier League at the first time of asking or have to make do with another season in the Championship, the summer transfer window looks set to be a busy one for outgoings and incomings at Elland Road.

Leeds will look to cut ties permanently with at least one forgotten face in the off-season, the £90k-per-week outcast struggling with his current club Everton as they fight against being relegated from the top flight.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke watches a Championship game.

Jack Harrison's time at Everton

Jack Harrison must be cursing his luck at why he relocated to Goodison Park, having been in a dogfight at the bottom of the division with Leeds before moving on to the Toffees in a now similar predicament.

The 27-year-old has four goals and three assists next to his name this season for Sean Dyche's downtrodden men, but the former Leeds star turned villain has only managed to fire in one league strike this year to try and help his loan club stave off the drop.

Harrison's dire display when Everton were humiliated 6-0 away at Chelsea last time out showcases a man bereft of confidence, failing to fire a single effort on the Blues goal from an unmemorable 45-minute spell at Stamford Bridge.

It remains to be seen whether or not the Merseyside club even keep Harrison around on a permanent deal, but from a Leeds perspective, the West Yorkshire side will be more than content with getting the out-of-sorts 27-year-old off their books when this season is over and done with.

leeds-united-transfer-gossip-farke-swansea-city-joel-piroe

Jack Harrison's future at Leeds

Whilst Harrison leaving the club would have been seen as an initial blow to Farke and Co at the start of the campaign, with the once-adored Whites winger bagging six goals in his last full season at Elland Road, other wingers at the club have more than stepped up now in his absence.

The likes of Daniel James and Wilfried Gnonto have been terrifying to watch down the right channel for Leeds this season, with James making Harrison's once solid spot his own by firing in 13 goals in all competitions to become a much-loved figure.

Dan James

In contrast, Harrison's best-ever total donning Leeds white for a full campaign was a lesser ten.

Even when he was performing at his best for Leeds with Newcastle United once interested, football journalist James Marshment would still describe the former Manchester City man as "frustrating" to watch.

Moreover, the £90k-per-week Harrison raked in during Leeds' poor 2022-23 season must also have been a sticking point as to why the Whites insisted on the 27-year-old moving onto Merseyside despite his impressive numbers.

1. Georginio Rutter

£70k per week

2. Patrick Bamford

£70k per week

3. Junior Firpo

£60k per week

4. Daniel James

£50k per week

5. Pascal Struijk

£50k per week

That excessive pay packet would make Harrison the highest earner in the Leeds camp currently if a loan move never happened, with the promotion-chasing Whites more at ease with dishing out a hefty £70k-per-week wage to Georginio Rutter based on his stunning season to date.

Harrison will find on his return to Elland Road, if Everton don't want to pay up to win him permanently, that there's no longer a real space for him in the new-look starting eleven crafted by Farke.

jack-harrison-leeds-premier-league-everton-transfers

Leeds will hold out hope that they can offload Harrison – who looks set to leave this summer – for a fee close to the £11m they forked out in 2021 soon, bringing his up-and-down time in West Yorkshire finally to a subdued end.

Michael Neser and Mark Steketee steamroll Tasmania to set up ten-wicket win

Queensland climb to the second spot on the Shield table after thumping Tasmania inside three days

ESPNcricinfo staff16-Feb-2020Queensland’s seamers led by Michael Neser and Mark Steketee destroyed Tasmania to set up a ten-wicket victory inside three days at the Gabba.Neser and Steketee took three wickets apiece to bowl Tasmania out for 236 on the third day. Half-centuries from Tasmania trio Ben McDermott, Tim Paine and Beau Webster ensured the home side would bat again but the paultry target of 58 was light work for Queensland openers Joe Burns and Bryce Street.McDermott and Paine added 54 in the morning session after Steketee removed nightwatchman Gabe Bell. McDermott reached his second half-century of the season and absorbed 189 deliveries before Steketee produced another cracking delivery to break the partnership and have McDermott caught behind.Paine and Webster also added 56 for the seventh wicket with the Australian Test captain passing fifty for the second time in the Shield season. He struck eight fours and a six but Neser knocked him over with the second new ball to expose the tail. Tasmania lost 4 for 43 with Webster the last man out for 50.Burns and Street needed just ten overs to reach the target of 58. Burns raced to 46 not out from 35 balls with six fours and a six before Street hit the winning runs to deny him a half-century. The win moves the Bulls up to the second spot on the Sheffield Shield table.

Arsenal eye move to sign Bundesliga left-back with 15 assists this season

Arsenal are one of several clubs showing an interest in one of Europe's most in-form defenders ahead of the summer transfer window.

Arsenal's summer transfer plans

2023/24 has been another impressive campaign for Mikel Arteta and his Gunners. With just over a month of the season to go, the north Londoners are firmly in the Premier League title race and may end the weekend top of the table once more. A key reason for Arsenal's success this term has been their solid backline, with just 24 goals conceded in 31 league games at the time of writing. This is the best record in the division and an impressive eight less than the current Premier League holders, Manchester City.

Though Arsenal are playing excellent football this season, Gunners fans will no doubt believe their side can still be improved upon this summer as the north Londoners continue their journey back to the top of English football.

In this vein, Arsenal have already seemingly begun preparing for a hectic summer transfer window, with several major names already tipped for a move to the Emirates. Fabrizio Romano shared an update on Arsenal's interest in £120,000-per-week Newcastle United star Alexander Isak earlier this week.

“Alexander Isak is another Newcastle player attracting interest, and Arsenal have always appreciated him, even when he was at Real Sociedad. They’ve been scouting him for a while and he’s considered a really talented striker, and with the style they have I think he’s appreciated as a good fit for that style."

Newcastle player Alexander Isak

Elsewhere, Viktor Gyokeres has reportedly made Arsenal his "first choice" club if he is to leave Sporting this summer, while reports in Spain claim Arsenal are interested in AC Milan winger, Rafael Leao.

But while it is seemingly their forward line Arsenal are looking to improve the most during the upcoming transfer window, fresh reports this week suggest Arteta is also eager to sure up what is already a very solid defence.

Arsenal eye left-back with 15 assists

According to FootballTransfers, Bayer Leverkusen left-back Alejandro Grimaldo is admired by Arsenal, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich ahead of the 2024 summer transfer window.

Bayer Leverkusen's Alejandro Grimaldo.

Grimaldo, called "very intelligent" by Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes, is under contract with the unbeaten German outfit until 2027 and is currently valued at €45m by Transfermarkt, though FootballTransfers report that the exact price demanded for the 28-year-old has not been revealed.

If his current form is anything to go by, however, Arsenal and any other interested parties may have to pay a pretty penny for the former Benfica star. Grimaldo has spent much of 2023/24 operating on the left of a back-five for his current club. During that time he has scored 11 and assisted 15 in 41 games across all competitions.

Arsenal's current left-back options pale in comparison, with Oleksandr Zinchenko securing just one goal and two assists in 32 games this term and Jakub Kiwior providing one goal and three assists when deployed on the left of Arsenal's back-four, making this one to watch over the coming months.

Eriksson, who managed England between 2001 and 2006, passed away on Monday morning. The Swede had revealed his terminal pancreatic cancer diagnosis in January, saying that he had "at best" a year to live.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT ERIKSSON'S FAMILY SAID

In a statement, Eriksson's family said: "After a long illness, SGE died during the morning at home surrounded by family. The closest mourners are daughter Lina; son Johan with wife Amana and granddaughter Sky; father Sven; girlfriend Yanisette with son Alcides; brother Lars-Erik with wife Jumnong. The family asks for respect for their wish to mourn in private and not be contacted."

ENGLAND'S FIRST NON-BRITISH MANAGER

Eriksson was England's first non-British manager and led the Three Lions to the quarter-finals of three major tournaments during his five-year tenure, leaving the role after the 2006 World Cup.

At club level he managed 12 different teams – most notably Man City and Lazio – and won 18 trophies across a stellar career. Eriksson was able to live his dream of managing Liverpool in March, taking charge of a legends match against Ajax and guiding the Reds to a 4-2 win.

A matter of days ago, Eriksson delivered an emotional goodbye message to the football world, taken from the Amazon Prime documentary 'Sven'.

"I had a good life. I think we are all scared of the day when we die, but life is about death as well," Eriksson says at the end of the documentary. "You have to learn to accept it for what it is. Hopefully at the end people will say, yeah, he was a good man, but everyone will not say that.

"I hope you will remember me as a positive guy trying to do everything he could do. Don't be sorry, smile. Thank you for everything, coaches, players, the crowds, it's been fantastic. Take care of yourself and take care of your life. And live it."

Spurs in pole position to land secret first summer signing for Ange

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou moved to bolster his defensive options in the January transfer window with the signing of Radu Dragusin from Genoa.

The Romania international joined on a permanent deal to add further depth to the club's central defensive unit, alongside Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

It was reported last month that Spurs are planning to sign another left-footed centre-back, as they currently have two right-sided stoppers – Romero and Dragusin – and one left-sided titan in Van de Ven.

Radu Dragusin in action for Tottenham

The Lilywhites are now reportedly plotting their first signing of the upcoming summer transfer window to address exactly that for Postecoglou.

Tottenham's secret interest in left-footed colossus

According to the Turin edition of La Repubblica, as relayed by Sport Witness, Spurs have been moving under the radar, in secret, in an attempt to win the race for Torino star Alessandro Buongiorno.

The report claims that the club are in pole position to secure his services but they are not the only interested party ahead of the summer.

AC Milan, Juventus and Inter are all also said to be eyeing up a possible swoop to sign the central defender to bolster their respective squads.

Alessandro Buongiorno

It states that Torino are not willing to let the impressive defender depart for less than €35m (£30m), and that valuation could soar if they qualify for European competition for next season.

Sport Witness also quotes the article as revealing Buongiorno is "destined" to be a transfer target for half of Europe, which suggests that the defender could be on his way out of his current club this summer as interest builds in his services.

Spurs are seemingly working away in the background to lay the groundwork for a possible deal, moving in secret to gain an edge over the opposition, but it remains to be seen whether or not they are prepared to match the £30m price tag.

How Alessandro Buongiorno compares to Micky van de Ven

The left-footed colossus could be brought in to provide Van de Ven with competition for the left-sided centre-back role within Postecoglou's system.

Based on their respective form in the Premier League and Serie A this season, Buongiorno could be the man to go for in big matches when Spurs will need more defensive actions from their stars.

As you can see in the table above, the Italy international has made far more tackles and interceptions per game to win possession back for his side, by cutting out opposition attacks.

However, the 24-year-old star has only made 2.19 progressive passes per 90 in the Serie A this season – ranking within the bottom 16% of his positional peers.

Whereas, Van de Ven ranks within the top 26% of Premier League centre-backs for progressive passes per 90 (4.05), which suggests that he has the edge over Buongiorno when it comes to playing out from the back to break down stubborn defences.

Therefore, the £30m-rated ace could be a fantastic alternative option for Spurs in that position as he has different strengths to the Dutch speedster that would allow the team to diversify their style of play, or how they defend at least, throughout the season.

Usman Khawaja and Marcus Stoinis lose Cricket Australia contracts

Ashton Agar, Joe Burns and Mitchell Marsh among those included in the list

Daniel Brettig30-Apr-2020Usman Khawaja and Marcus Stoinis have lost their Cricket Australia contracts after falling out of favour with the national selectors over the past 12 months, leaving both with a particularly steep battle to return to international cricket whenever it resumes after the coronavirus pandemic.Alongside Nathan Coulter-Nile, Peter Handscomb, Marcus Harris, Shaun Marsh, Ashton Turner and the retired Peter Siddle, Stoinis and Khawaja were broadly expected to be missing when the list was announced on Thursday, but their absence for the first time in some years underlined how far they have fallen in the eyes of the national team coach Justin Langer and the selection chairman Trevor Hohns – himself currently out of contract. Both were considered central figures in the national team as recently as last year’s World Cup in England. Stojnis endured a poor tournament, did not play another international and was used in a very different role, as a non-bowling opening batsman, by the Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League last summer.”You have to look at Marcus as a top-order player in T20 cricket because that’s where he’s been most successful, we certainly acknowledge that,” Hohns said. “He’s operating at the top of the order where it’s congested and competitive field up there with Warner, Finch, Smith, MaxwellMen’s contracts 2020-21

Ashton Agar, Joe Burns, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Aaron Finch, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Tim Paine, James Pattinson, Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson, Steven Smith, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa

“Obviously he’s always high in our thoughts and ranked reasonably well in T20 cricket but the other forms of the game let him down. He wants to play long-form cricket for Australia, he wants to play one-day cricket, as all players do. It comes back to performance in those forms of the game, it comes back to scoring hundreds particularly in the longest form of the game, that’s the sort of feedback we’ve been giving Marcus all along.”Khawaja’s absence from the World Cup semi-final loss to England was described as crucial by Langer, but he too fell from prominence in a difficult Ashes series for batsmen, losing his No. 3 spot to Marnus Labuschagne by the end of the series.”Usman is one of the unlucky ones, there’s no doubt,” Hohns said. “As we know, Usman didn’t play cricket for Australia last year in any format after being dropped from the Ashes series. Probably if I’m looking at Test cricket, Usman’s form in domestic Shield cricket didn’t demand he was chosen for Australia – I think that’s pretty fair. One-day cricket he didn’t play for Australia despite being a very good performer in the Marsh Cup earlier in the season.”Ussie was a difficult one for us, probably the hardest one. He was ranked in two of the three forms of the game and unfortunately just fell out the bottom of the list. We know Usman’s a fabulous player and I don’t have any doubt he’ll accept the challenge going forward to get back into that Australian side.”Labuschagne’s first full CA contract represents his own rapid rise as one of Australia’s most reliable batsmen, with Ashton Agar, Joe Burns, Mitchell Marsh, Kane Richardson and Matthew Wade also receiving call-ups after being upgraded from state deals to incremental central contracts over the preceding year. Hohns admitted that Labuschagne had exceeded all expectations, but also counselled against throwing him into all formats of the game too quickly – his T20 game will be left to evolve in the Big Bash League for the time being.”He’s been fantastic hasn’t he,” Hohns said. “I think everyone for a period of time was waiting for the bubble to burst to be honest, but he’s gone from strength to strength representing Australia, not only in Test cricket but one-day cricket as well and doing a wonderful job. He’s been a revelation and he deserves all the accolades he gets because he’s one of those players that work so hard, he’s probably one of the hardest workers in that group, but he’s dragging other along with him.”We don’t want to go too far with him yet, he works so hard, he’s now playing Test cricket and one-day cricket. That’s happened in a short period of time. We don’t want to overburden, whether he can play T20 cricket for Australia is really in his court. There’s no reason why a player like that can’t play T20 cricket, but at the moment it’s in his court and we have a pretty good T20 side or squad at the moment as well, and they’re the ones we’ll be focusing on, looking forward to the World Cup.”Handscomb, Harris and Shaun Marsh have all been moved past by others in the batting stakes, while Mitchell Marsh has effectively replaced Stoinis as the selectors’ allrounder of choice. Ashton Turner, who burst onto the international scene on the ODI tour of India in early 2019, has had a difficult subsequent 12 months due to shoulder problems, but will likely remain in the selectors’ thoughts.”On Mitch Marsh, he wasn’t in the contract list last year, as we all know. He’s had a little bit of a resurgence,” Hohns said. “We saw the last Test match in England in the Ashes series he took a five-wicket haul and in the last game he played – a one-day game for Australia before the unfortunate virus taken hold of everything – he gave us a man of the match performance. We do think there’s something there with Mitch. Mitch is now at an age where in our view he’s coming into his peak years. Hopefully from here on he can realise the potential that a lot of people have seen in him the last five or six years.”With Shaun, you never say never and I’ll never say never of course. I think Shaun, he’s now 36 or 37, is probably past representing Australia. We’ve spoken to Shaun regularly in the last 12 months. He’s been a wonderful player in domestic cricket he’s played some very, very good innings for Australia in Test match cricket and will be sorely missed. What is good is he’s continuing to play as a senior player in domestic cricket – he’s got a big role to play.”Maxwell has retained his spot on the list ahead of the T20 World Cup. “He did achieve a very high [T20] ranking of course, he’s a very important player in T20 cricket for us, but he also ranked reasonably well in one-day cricket,” Hohns said. “We see him as a very good white-ball player for us. What he has to offer, he can win a game.”We’d like to see him win more for us of course, particularly in the 50-over game, but he can win you a game, he’s that sort of player that the public want to see. He’s exciting, and with his fielding and his bowling, his bowling is starting to come back to where it was a few years ago, so the whole package he offers it just seems as though white-ball cricket suits him, and suits his style.”

Wrexham chief says he’d love to sign £100k-p/w duo at The Racecourse Ground

Wrexham executive director Humphrey Ker has revealed the two dream signings he would love to bring to North Wales.

Wrexham preparing for League One

It has been another incredible season for the Welsh club, as they continue to go from strength to strength under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Wrexham earned promotion from the National League to League Two this time last year, and they have now made it into League One at the very first attempt, finishing second in the table.

It is now time to focus on life in the third tier of English football for Phil Parkinson and those in charge of transfers at the club, with new signings no doubt needed to take them to another level next season.

There is certainly reason for Wrexham supporters to start thinking bigger when it comes to potential signings, as they make their way up for the football pyramid, and Ker is dreaming big when it comes to two potential additions, albeit rather tongue-in-cheek.

Wrexham chief wants Liverpool star

Speaking to Sport Bible, executive director Ker admitted that he would love Wrexham to sign Liverpool midfielder Wataru Endo and Wales defender Neco Williams: "So in the past, I've been asked this question (and) I've often cited sort of a Neco Williams as one, you know, he's from the area, he's a Premier League quality right back, plays for Wales. The day we are signing players like that will be a sign of how far we've come.

"In terms of who's one of my favourite players and who would I love to see playing in a Wrexham shirt? At present, I've got a real soft spot for Wataru Endo, who is kind of a perfect encapsulation of the fury in the summer when Liverpool missed out on Caicedo and Lavia and it was all doom and gloom and disaster.

"And then they sign Wataru Endo and it was like ‘well, who's this guy? I've never heard of him, he was only 16 million quid, what are they playing at?' And then he's been one of the signings of the season. I think there's a good lesson there for all of us in terms of, you know, the glitz and the glamour and the big price tags and ‘what are Liverpool doing not spending 100 million on a central midfielder’."

Liverpool players Wataru Endo and Alexis Mac Allister

Granted, there is little to no chance of Wrexham signing a player of Endo and Williams' calibre in the summer transfer window or even in the next few years – they earn £50,000 per week each currently, which is miles out of their price range – but it is still a sign of the incredible progress made that Ker can even dream of such additions.

This is a glorious era at The Racecourse Ground – one that supporters need to treasure even despite whatever lofty future ambitions they may have – and the hope is that Reynolds and McElhenney are still just getting started, eventually guiding the club into the Premier League.
