Belagavi Panthers suspended from KPL following owner's arrest on betting charges

Decision taken by the outgoing KSCA management, with the new administration expected to consider further action against the franchise

Nagraj Gollapudi02-Oct-2019The outgoing administration of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) has suspended the Belagavi Panthers franchise as well its owner Ali Asfak Thara, who has been arrested on charges of alleged betting on Karnataka Premier League (KPL) games, from the T20 league. The decision was taken by the outgoing managing committee of the KSCA on Tuesday and the new administration, which will take charge after the association elections on Thursday, will consider further action against the franchise, including possibly terminating the existing contract.Last month, Thara was arrested by the Karnataka Police’s crime branch for alleged betting during this season’s KPL.

This is a precautionary measure we have taken so that others should not follow these stepsSidhakar Rao

Thara was also co-owner of the Kerala Knights franchise in the Abu Dhabi T10 league, and reports suggest that the league has dissociated itself from him after he was booked for gambling under the Karnataka Police Act. The police have said that Thara was “indulging in betting during the matches”. He remains in custody, and the police are likely to file a chargesheet against him soon.According to Sudhakar Rao, the outgoing KSCA secretary, the decision has been conveyed to the Panthers management orally. “We have to take [some] action. At the moment we have suspended the franchise and the owner,” Rao told ESPNcricinfo.According to Rao, the KSCA felt it had to send a message that there was zero tolerance toward corruption in the KPL. “This is a precautionary measure we have taken so that others should not follow these steps.”Any “severe” action including terminating the contract with the Panthers would only be taken by the new KSCA administration if and when the police conclusively establish Thara’s involvement in corruption in the KPL. “If we get the details (on the police investigation) in writing then we can take severe action against those franchisees or players or whoever is involved,” Rao said.

Journalist confirms new Man Utd injury before FA Cup clash vs Liverpool

Manchester United have suffered yet another injury blow ahead of their FA Cup quarter-final clash with rivals Liverpool this weekend, as reported by Samuel Luckhurst.

Man Utd injury news

The Red Devils face a massive game on Sunday afternoon, taking on their biggest rivals at Old Trafford, looking to end their chances of winning four trophies this season. Granted, Erik ten Hag's side will go into the game as underdogs, but they should be expected to raise their game, given their opponents.

United's season has unquestionably been a disappointing one, with sixth place in the Premier League nowhere near good enough currently, but injuries can be used as an excuse for their struggles, with so many important players missing during the campaign.

jean-clair-todibo-lisandro-martinez-tottenham-opinion

Against Liverpool, for example, the Red Devils will have to make do without key defensive duo Lisandro Martinez and Luke Shaw, while Jonny Evans is also among those unavailable in the back-line.

Meanwhile, Rasmus Hojlund has been a huge loss leading the line, having scored in six matches in a row before his current layoff, meaning the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford will really have to perform this weekend if he isn't ready to start.

Now, another player has been added to United's list of absentees, as they prepare for one of their biggest matches of the 2023/24 season to date.

Man Utd suffer another injury before Liverpool

Taking to X, Luckhurst confirmed that goalkeeper Altay Bayindir is out of Manchester United's clash with Liverpool through injury.

"Not the most consequential of team news but Altay Bayindir is out injured for the Liverpool game, #mufc confirm. Should be Dermot Mee or Tom Heaton on the bench."

As Luckhurst alludes to, this admittedly isn't the biggest injury blow in the world, considering Bayindir isn't a key man – he has only made one appearance for United to date, conceding twice against Newport County in the FA Cup fourth round earlier this season – but it still rather sums up the injuries on show this season.

It also means that 21-year-old Demot Mee could be drafted into the squad as an emergency 'keeper, having not yet made an appearance for the Red Devils at senior level, testing the depth within Ten Hag's squad.

United should still be able to field a starting lineup that is capable of causing Liverpool problems, however, with Garnacho and Rashford dangerous on their day, and Bruno Fernandes a player with the ability to be a difference-maker in the final third.

Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo and Scott McTominay will likely make up a well-balanced midfield, while Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire are hugely experienced at the back.

CA consider marquee draft after Sydney Sixers nearly swoop on Mitchell Starc

Starc had appeared set to join Hazlewood in a move that would have granted the club arguably the world’s best white-ball bowler, drastically altering calculations for every other team

Daniel Brettig11-Dec-2019Recruiting regulations and the possibility of a Big Bash League marquee player draft will be reviewed by Cricket Australia after a hectic last week of negotiations almost saw Mitchell Starc join Josh Hazlewood in what would have been a near tournament-winning play by the Sydney Sixers. While Hazlewood was signed by the Sixers at the very end of the contracting period on Friday, Starc had appeared set to join him in a move that would have granted the Sydney club arguably the world’s best white-ball bowler for the pointy end of the tournament, drastically altering calculations for every other team.CA were understandably eager to get every possible high profile player involved in the tournament and were disappointed that Starc ultimately did not join in time to meet the contracting deadline. The absence of Pat Cummins from the Sydney Thunder list, which left the club with a final list of 17 players rather than the maximum 18, was also a blow. However rival clubs were less than enchanted by the fact that the Sixers were able to add Hazlewood and potentially Starc to what was already a full list by simply paying out the contracts of two lower profile players. The seam bowler Henry Thornton lost his place on the Sixers list but will have his contract paid out, with the possibility that he can earn more money by returning as an injury replacement later in the tournament. This is not to say the Sixers were themselves happy with the scenario. The club’s general manager Jodie Hawkins was required to disclose and explain the Sixers’ plans to recruit Hazlewood and Starc on a conference call with officials from all clubs last week. Senior figures contacted by ESPNcricinfo at three BBL clubs agreed that while all wanted the best players involved in the competition, the process by which this took place needed some serious work.”The BBL has always been known for constantly innovating,” CA’s head of the BBL Alistair Dobson told ESPNcricinfo. “We’ll review list and contracting rules to make sure they work as best they can for the competition and a big priority is making sure the best overseas and Australian players can play. To work with our clubs closely on what might need to be adjusted to make sure that happens is one of our key priorities at the end of each season.”This year, the way the fixture was able to be built and condensed has made both international and local windows better. We’ve changed some of the overseas replacement player rules to make it easier for clubs to bring international replacement players in and out of the competition, and that’s shown in some of the players who’ve been able to find their way into the BBL this season.Josh Hazlewood is set to play in the BBL for the first time in six seasons•Getty Images”It’s relatively clear communication between the leagues and clubs as players are put on lists, we make sure clubs are given the information in a timely fashion, at the same time making sure clubs have got the opportunity to then negotiate with players and get the contracts done as required. Everything’s quite transparent and well communicated with clubs.”There is a considerable advantage for the Sydney BBL clubs in the fact that, should they deign to take part in some or all of the BBL, the nation’s leading pace bowlers Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins are all based there. Other imbalances in the competition that have been sore points in the past have included complaints from the two-club Sydney and Melbourne markets about the ability of clubs in Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Hobart to better balance their state and BBL contract lists in order to retain players.”We work closely with all our clubs on their different list builds and stay in touch with them on how those lists are coming together,” Dobson said. “From our point of view, it’s great for us to have as many Australian players, particularly high profile ones, playing in the Big Bash as possible, not only out of the Test team but even this year the way we’ve been able to build the fixture to make it a better opportunity for some other big name Australian players to play more BBL.”It’s been a really big priority, we’re really excited about how that’s progressed. As you come towards the end of a contracting period there’s always a flurry of activity, the Sixers have got great relationships with those players and they’re really keen to be part of the season and we’re really excited the Sixers were able to get it done.”The other major recruiting issue for the BBL remains the broad spectrum of contract value available in different T20 leagues around the world, particularly the Bangladesh and Pakistan leagues that clash with the Australian tournament and can offer far more money for a lot less game time. The recruitment of players like AB de Villiers to the Brisbane Heat requires far more than what can simply be offered within each club’s cap, resulting in a rash of third-party deals that have the ring of an exhibition tournament rather than a fully-fledged league.”We work with all our clubs constantly on how we make sure they can build and recruit players in the best interests of the competition,” Dobson said. “From time to time we work with them on the best way to do that, and that might mean the league supporting that in different ways.”I think from our perspective we’re reviewing each year the salary cap and the ability for clubs to recruit the players they need to put on the best possible competition. But at the same time we’re mindful that our selling proposition to players extends to the best stadiums, the biggest crowds, the best-run competition, the most exciting cricket.”So while being competitive in the market from a salary point of view is important, we’re also mindful of ensuring the other things around the offering to players are as good as they can be, and the BBL is showing over time it delivers on those. That said the competitive landscape is constantly shifting and we need to make sure we’re on top of it.”

Newcastle ready to pay £50m+ to sign "amazing" new attacker this summer

Newcastle United are willing to pay more than £50m to secure the signing of an "amazing" attacking player in the summer transfer window, according to a new report.

Newcastle eyeing new signings

The Magpies and PIF may again look for new additions this summer, with centre-back a primary position they appear to be targeting, not least because Sven Botman has damaged his ACL and will be out for between six and nine months, acting as a massive blow.

Sporting CP pair Goncalo Inacio and Ousmane Diomande are two options that have been mooted for a while, and a recent update has given Newcastle hope of signing at least one of them, with their current club already eyeing up replacements.

Ousmane Diomande for Sporting against Benfica.

Juventus defender Dean Huijsen is another highly-rated young player with a big future in the game, and he has also been linked with a switch to St James' Park at the end of the season. The 18-year-old has already 11 Serie A appearances this season, averaging two clearances per game in the competition.

Newcastle ready to pay £50m+ for "amazing" Juventus attacker

According to a report from Spain, Newcastle and PIF are also interested in signing Federico Chiesa this summer, and are willing to pay more than £50m to get their man.

Juventus forward Federico Chiesa.

The Magpies are seen as the club showing the most willingness to make a move for the Juve star, should he look to leave the Turin giants at the end of the season.

Chiesa has been backed to join Newcastle plenty of times in the past, so it does appear as though he is a strong target for them this summer, and it is easy to see why.

An explosive wide man who has shone on the international stage with Italy, winning Euro 2020, he could be an upgrade on the likes of Miguel Almiron, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes, having been lauded by Azzurri legend Giorgio Chiellini, who clearly rates him highly as a player:

"Chiesa is a player that could play in every big team in Europe. He could face you 10 times and beat you nine of 10 times! He can go right and left, his pace is amazing. He's fantastic for that type of job. He's not the type of player that links the team, like a number 10, not a player that likes to have the ball and connect passes with team-mates, but one against one, he's unstoppable."

Man Utd set eyes on Euro 2024 winner labelled 'one of the best midfielders in the world' but Fabrizio Romano explains why a deal is 'complicated'

Man Utd want to sign Martin ZubimendiSpaniard hailed as 'one of the best' by De La FuenteUnited's move for midfielder remains 'complicated'GettyWHAT HAPPENED?

Martin Zubimendi did not play a very big part in Spain's Euro 2024 campaign. However, after an injury to Rodri in the final in Berlin, the Real Sociedad midfielder played a phenomenal half of football to help La Roja conquer England. Additionally, the 25-year-old has impressed with La Real over the last few seasons and has been one of Imanol Alguacil's top players.

Manchester United, who are looking to sign a defensive midfielder this summer, are keeping tabs on the Spaniard, however, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has told GiveMeSport that a move this summer could be complicated as Zubimendi is not keen on leaving his boyhood club. Additionally, Real Sociedad are open to selling the 25-year-old only at his release clause of £51 million ($65.6m) which could be difficult for the Red Devils to attain unless they make sales first.

Getty DID YOU KNOW?

Zubimendi has previously been heavily hailed by Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente as one of the best midfielders in the world. In November of last year, the 63-year-old was asked about who he voted for at FIFA's The Best award and said: "Rodri, Haaland and Messi…, and by the way last year I voted for Julián Álvarez, which caused some commotion…, but also for Bellingham and in third place for Modric. But no one knew Jude Bellingham, then, except in Madrid, of course. He has had a sensational explosion. He is a different player. But well, Rodrigo has been my first choice this time because we have the two best centre-halfs in the world: Rodri and Zubimendi."

WHAT NEXT FOR ZUBIMENDI?

The Spaniard has been the target of interest from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Bayern Munich but has maintained his position of respecting his contract with Real Sociedad which runs until the summer of 2027, and it is likely that unless a club reaches an agreement with La Real, he will not look to leave the club.

'Doesn't sit really well' – Nathan Lyon miffed after dropping catches

The offspinner finally bagged a five-wicket haul on his home ground

Andrew McGlashan in Sydney05-Jan-2020It has taken a while for Nathan Lyon but he has finally got a five-wicket haul on his home ground. And by doing it against New Zealand, he has completed a set against every team he has faced.Four more wickets in the second innings will give him his most prolific home season (last summer he took 25 wickets across six Tests) while his average of 24.68 is his best since his first campaign in 2011-12. It was the first five-wicket haul for an Australia spinner at the SCG since Nathan Hauritz’s 5 for 53 against Pakistan in January 2010 at a ground where the average for spinners had been over 50 in the previous decade. On a slow surface that was taking turn, Lyon came to the fore as he defied a spilt thumb, sustained when he dropped one of two caught-and-bowled chances off Glenn Phillips, to finish with 5 for 68. The final rewards came against the tail, but he had been a threat throughout the day and claimed the first two wickets of the innings which took 49 overs to secure as New Zealand’s top order dug in.”It’s quite special to go up on the honours board and take five wickets at your home, in front of your family and friends, and to take five at one of your favourite venues from around the world,” he said. “To be honest with you, I split my thumb but I was more frustrated about dropping a pretty easy catch, in my eyes.”I pride myself on my fielding, especially the fielding off my own bowling. I know how hard it is to take Test wickets and when you’re dropping catches off your own bowling it doesn’t sit really well with you. So the thumb is fine. It is what it is. I’m more disappointed in my standards to be honest.”Nathan Lyon dropped a second return catch•Getty ImagesThe SCG pitch has not been dissimilar to the two surfaces produced for the Sheffield Shield this season – although not quite as slow and low as the one against Western Australia – but while it has made life tough for the quicks, Lyon has found enough from the rough to keep him interested.”I don’t mind if it’s slow if there’s a bit of bounce, obviously spin as well, and there’s starting to be some variable bounce,” he said. “I’m very lucky I’ve got big Mitch Starc running down the middle of it, which is quite nice of him. That’s one of the reasons I love playing with Starcy. It’s about me bowling my best ball over and over and over again, challenging these guys’ defence.”While it was a day of personal success, Lyon’s thoughts – like so many in Australia – remained with those battling the catastrophic bushfires around the country. Earlier in the match, the Australian bowlers joined the mass of sportspeople and organisations pledging donations to the relief fund with A$1000 for each wicket they take during this Test.”The true heroes in Australia right now are the firefighters and volunteers,” he said. “It’s such a small thing for us to donate $1000 a wicket. It puts cricket into perspective and it’s showing Australia’s true colours and how everyone rallies behind a country or people when they’re having a hard time and really getting behind them. I’m proud to be an Australian in hard times, and we’re getting around them.”

£15,000-a-week Leeds ace facing late fitness test before Hull City clash

Leeds United are sweating on the fitness of yet another possible absentee with as many as four of Daniel Farke's squad already confirmed out for the Easter Monday clash with Hull City.

Leeds team news vs Hull City

The Whites surrendered their short-lived lead at the top of the Championship on Good Friday, briefly moving top on goal difference after Leicester's shock defeat only to fall behind Ipswich despite a battling draw at Watford.

Crysencio Summerville was once again the star of the show, scoring a stunning goal to level things after Vakoun Bayo had opened the scoring for the hosts, but it took a classic poacher's goal from late substitute Mateo Joseph to escape Vicarage Road with a point.

And Farke may well have to utitlise the depth of his squad again on Monday, as he will definitely be without Wilfried Gnonto, Stuart Dallas, Connor Roberts and Pascal Struijk, as per the latest team news from The Yorkshire Evening Post.

Wilfried Gnonto

It looks as though the manager will have to juggle things around in midfield a bit – or risk burning out the same group who started the match on Friday – with £15,000-a-week midfielder Ilia Gruev also facing a race against time to make the squad.

Ilia Gruev injury update

The latest news on Gruev's injury is that he's a "major doubt" for Monday's action after picking up a knock on international duty with Bulgaria.

The 23 year-old, who has started 14 Championship matches this season and come off the bench nine times in the competition, has become a bit of an unsung hero within the squad, completing 92.6% of his passes in the league this season, leading Adrian Clarke to say he's player "no one really talks about ".

"He is class, he really is a smooth operator in the heart of the engine room," Clarke said earlier this season. "Gets about the pitch, recovers possession kind of effortlessly but he does with the ball. He just moves it early and quickly but with real quality and rarely gives the ball away. He can drop a pass over the top of a defender all day long for those wide players."

Leeds midfielder Ilia Gruev.

It looks like Leeds will have to make do without those abilities against Hull unless he passes a late fitness test, after Farke revealed in the aftermath of the draw at Watford: "The only player who has perhaps a chance is Ilia Gruev. We have to wait how the swelling will develop and perhaps there is some positive news with him."

The manager will be desperate to get Roberts, Gnonto and the Bulgaria international back for the run-in, with Dallas and Struijk ruled out for the rest of the season.
