Willock transfer boost for Newcastle

Mark Douglas has shared a big potential transfer boost for Newcastle United involving Joe Willock.

The Lowdown: Bruce wants Willock to stay

Speaking recently to talkSPORT, Steve Bruce has confirmed that the St. James’ Park faithful will be looking to sign Willock on a permanent deal after his loan spell from Arsenal ends in the summer window.

However, it is not a guarantee that Mikel Arteta’s team will want to let him go given how well he has performed so far in the North East.

The Latest: Potential Willock boost

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Douglas has shared that the Gunners are ‘open to offers’ for Willock, with a fee of £20m being cited to potentially lure him away from the Emirates Stadium.

Whether the Tyneside club would be willing to pay that kind of money is another question, but it does mean at least that the door is open.

The Verdict: Newcastle must buy Willock

Even if he is to cost as much as £20m, the Magpies should be looking to buy Willock permanently.

Not only has he been very impressive so far at the Toon, with no fewer than five goals scored in 11 games in total in the Premier League (Transfermarkt), but they would also be weakening a rival in the top flight.

Nonetheless, at just 21 years of age still, £20m could well turn out to be a snip whether he stays long-term or is sold on for profit in a few years time – this summer may present itself as the best opportunity that NUFC will ever have to sign him.

Aston Villa: Burnley back in front for Williams

Burnley appear to be back in front of Aston Villa in the race to sign West Brom defender Harry Williams.

The Lowdown: Williams’ Villa trial

Reports last weekend revealed that the 18-year-old, who had been on trial with Burnley, was actually through the Bodymoor Heath door ahead of a potential move.

He’s been given permission by the Baggies to find a new club and played for Villa in a 2-1 Premier League 2 win against Newcastle United.

However, despite his time across the Midlands at Villa, it seems as if a move to Turf Moor could now materialise.

The Latest: Burnley putting contract offer together

According to a recent report from Football Insider, the Clarets are looking to pip Villa to Williams’ services by putting together a contract offer.

There is hope in Lancashire that they will win the race for the centre-back, who also helped the Clarets to a Premier League 2 win during his trial.

The Verdict: Only time will tell if Villa should’ve acted quicker

Villa have plenty of exciting talent in their academy ranks. Louie Barry netted against Liverpool earlier this season in the FA Cup, while midfielders Aaron Ramsey and Carney Chukwuemeka both signed professional terms this season.

Williams could have been the next starlet to ply his trade in Mark Delaney’s youth side, however, it doesn’t look like that will be the case.

Only time will tell how costly missing out on Williams could prove to be. Should he go on to breakthrough into Burnley’s first team over the coming years, it may leave Villa with egg on their face.

Indian news round-up

Indian coach John Wright has said he favours two or three spinners and four seamers prior to the selection of the Indian team to the tour of Zimbabwe

Staff and Agencies15-May-2001Wright’s idea of the ideal bowling attackIndian coach John Wright has said he favours two or three spinners and four seamers prior to the selection of the Indian team to the tour of Zimbabwe. Talking to reporters at the end of the second day of the preparatory camp in Bangalore on Monday, Wright said “I personally favour the inclusion of two or three spinners as well as four seamers for the team which would tour Zimbabwe. But the matter has to be discussed and gone through.”Replying to a question on skipper Sourav Ganguly’s poor run in the recent series against Australia, the former New Zealand captain said it was only a matter of time before the Ganguly would regain his form. “Sourav is a world class player. He has got tremendous average in both forms of the game. Everyone goes through a lean spell. He looks very good at the nets and is working hard at his bating,” Wright said.Laxman, Ganguly eager to win a series abroadThe highest run getter in the recent series against Australia, VVS Laxman has said he was raring to go to help the Indian side to a series win abroad. The Hyderabadi batsman said “For a long time now, I’ve dreamt of being part of an Indian side that wins an overseas series.” Talking to reporters during the training camp at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore, Laxman said “I’ll bethrilled if I could play some part in helping the team win in Zimbabwe.”Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly said it was necessary for India to win away from home to establish themselves as a major force in international cricket. “We’ve got to win an away series. One win abroad will set right a lot of things,” he said.English players want Christmas breakThe England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has requested the BCCI to split the forthcoming series into two parts against India later this year. The reason cited by the ECB is that the players want a break to go home and celebrate Christmas with their family and hence the request for change in schedule.A BCCI source quoted by PTI said “The England and Wales Cricket Board has requested a 26-day break between the two series. “They wanted the Test series to be played from December 3 to 23 and leave for home on December 24 and be back in time for the one-dayers from January 22 to February 3, 2002.” He added “The proposal will be discussed at the BCCI’s technical committee meeting in New Delhi on May 16.”

Newcastle eyeing Leeds ace Tyler Roberts

A source has claimed that Newcastle United are eyeing a move for Tyler Roberts in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Roberts ever-present in Leeds success

Roberts has been a regular presence in a Leeds United team currently in the top half of the Premier League table in their first season following promotion from the Championship.

Having played in 25 league games for Marcelo Bielsa’s side so far this term (Transfermarkt), the Wales international has certainly played his part in their fine campaign.

The Latest: Newcastle eye Roberts

As per Football Insider, Newcastle are closely monitoring Roberts ahead of a potential transfer in the summer.

He is out of contract in 2022 and is yet to agree an extension, so the Whites may view it as an ideal opportunity to cash in on him now in order to gain some value.

A source has told Football Insider that the Tyneside club are keeping close tabs on his situation at Elland Road and are weighing up a possible move for him. Leeds currently value Roberts at £10m, which should be an affordable price for Steve Bruce’s side.

The Verdict: Newcastle should keep a watchful eye

Roberts certainly seems like a player who would enhance Newcastle’s squad, and with that added experience of playing in the Premier League, he would not have to adapt to the top flight.

Also, at just 22 years of age, he will likely get even better over the next few years, with his former manager Tony Pulis labelling him a ‘very talented’ player back in March.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-2/” title=”Newcastle updates! (2)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

His Transfermarkt) is something which could be of big concern.

The Magpies should be keeping a watchful eye on him for now, but at just £10m, he may be worth a gamble if nothing better presents itself in the market.

Innings victory puts Middlesex back on top

Middlesex duly beat Derbyshire in their CricInfo Championship match atSouthgate, getting home with an innings and more than day to spare

Norman de Mosquita01-Jun-2001Middlesex duly beat Derbyshire in their CricInfo Championship match atSouthgate, getting home with an innings and more than day to spare. It wastheir second Championship win of the season – as many as they managed alllast year – and it took them back to the top of the second division.Phil Tufnell was the main architect of the win with 10 for 133 in the match. He was well supported by Paul Weekes who had match figures of 7 for 107. Inaddition, it was a day of mixed fortunes for 22-year-old locally-born AaronLaraman who, on his Championship debut, took 2 for 20 but had the misfortuneto re-injure the shoulder which had kept him out of the side until this match. It took only 23 minutes for Middlesex to wrap up the Derbyshire first inningsand have them following on, 411 behind. Tufnell took the final wicket togive him a season’s-best 6 for 44. In the third over of their second innings, the visitors lost Steve Stubbings, who was leg before to Tim Bloomfield, theonly other wicket in the match taken by a Middlesex seamer. As early as the tenth over, Tufnell was brought into the attack and thespinners dominated for most of the rest of the day. Derbyshire did show a little more resolution than they had first time round and Nathan Dumelow confirmed his promise with a stylish 61 (his second half-century in only two Championship appearances) before he was very well caught at forward short leg.Matthew Dowman made 44 but only four other batsmen reached double figures andit was a match that Derbyshire will want to forget.

Somerset players to tackle Royal Marines Assault course at Lympstone

The Somerset squad returned to Taunton this evening after spending what Head of Injury Prevention Darren Veness described as "Two very very good days, which were good fun for everybody all round

Richard Walsh26-Mar-2002The Somerset squad returned to Taunton this evening after spending what Head of Injury Prevention Darren Veness described as "Two very very good days, which were good fun for everybody all round. It was all very intensive but very worthwhile and they will all have learnt something from the experience at Centre Parcs."One of the activities involved working in teams of three to scale a forty foot telegraph pole, and then standing together on a platform less than two feet in size at the top. In another similar activity they had to leap from the top of the pole onto a trapeze style swing, which a number of the players admitted they found pretty daunting.Darren told me, "That was a real confidence and team building activity. It was a big thing for all the boys to get up there to do it in the first place. Just to do that was an achievement for many of them."Steffan Jones, who was last season’s overall wicket taker, told me, "It was all a new experience for me, but I know that we will all have got something from it.”He continued, "Most of us were pretty scared climbing to the top of the telegraph pole, so it was a different type of achievement for us to do it. As we were doing it we were egging each other to get there, which was good for team building."All rounder Mike Burns told me, "It was a good two days especially the activity in teams climbing up the telegraph poles and we also spent sometime rock climbing all roped up. It was a new type of activity being offered at Centre Parcs and hopefully we will all have benefited from it."On Wednesday the Somerset squad travel south to Lympstone on the River Exe estuary to spend the day at the Royal Marine Commando Training Centre where they will amongst other things tackle the assault course.I asked Darren Veness for his thought ahead of the day. "It will be a pretty gruelling and I think that most of us will be happy to just get through it."Steffan Jones told me, "It’s been a bit like the Krypton Factor with all of the different things that we have done over the last ten days, but it has made a welcome change from working indoors where most of have spent the winter months training hard."Steffan continued, "Last season we had a pretty good team spirit in the club, and we all hope that this year it will be even better as a result of the types of activities that we have been doing."Looking forward to Wednesday Mike Burns told me, "It should be a very interesting day, especially as Chief Executive Peter Anderson will be taking part in the day!"

Southampton eyeing Thomas Strakosha

Southampton are reportedly interested in signing Lazio goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha ahead of next season, and he could be a superb addition to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad if he makes the move to St Mary’s this summer.

According to La Republicca (via Sport Witness), Southampton are keen to sign the 26-year-old as they look to strengthen their options in the goalkeeping position ahead of next season.

Hasenhuttl has rotated between Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster this term and both have had their difficult moments, with McCarthy conceding a large number of goals, the 31-year-old’s confidence perhaps shot after the 9-0 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Forster was solid in the FA Cup and was given his chance to impress in the Premier League, where he has managed just two clean sheets in eight appearances, conceding 11 goals.

The former England international turned 33 earlier this year, and whilst goalkeepers can comfortably play until their late 30s, with former Saints man Kelvin Davis a prime example, you could argue that Hasenhuttl could do with a younger option such as Strakosha in his squad.

It seems likely that Saints outcast Angus Gunn will depart this summer, with Norwich City said to be interested in him ahead of their return to the Premier League, so the south coast club may need to look to the transfer market in order to source a replacement.

Strakosha could certainly prove to be an excellent choice for Southampton, as he has been a solid option for Lazio in Serie A and in European competitions in recent years, so he boasts plenty of experience.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

The Albania international is currently valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, so he may be over Southampton’s budget as Hasenhuttl claimed that they would only target players under £10m.

Former Lazio goalkeeper Silvio Proto certainly rates Strakosha highly, as he was full of praise for the stopper back in 2018, saying: “I’ve never seen a strong goalkeeper like him, behind a group with so much quality. The Albanian is young, big physically, explosive … He has everything you need to make a career at the top.”

If Southampton were to splash the cash to bring in Strakosha this summer, it could end Hasenhuttl’s headache when it comes to choosing between McCarthy and Forster as he would have a definitive number one shot-stopper, so Martin Semmens should definitely consider a move for the 26-year-old Albanian.

Aston Villa eyeing Burnley’s Dwight McNeil

The Athletic’s Gregg Evans has confirmed that Aston Villa are eyeing a move for Burnley winger Dwight McNeil this summer.

What’s the story?

A report from Football Insider previously claimed that Dean Smith’s side have their eye on the Clarets talent, with the 21-year-old “one of the top targets of their recruitment team” and the Premier League club “lining up a huge bid for him”.

Evans has now said: “Villa already recognise the need for another wide player, and The Athletic understands Burnley’s Dwight McNeil is of serious interest, as is Emi Buendia of Championship winners Norwich. Extensive groundwork has already been done on both of them.

“The scouting department has closely scrutinised his in-game contributions, and McNeil is recognised as a player who brings additional options to open up a game.

“Ideally, Burnley do not wish to part with any of their top performers and are under no pressure to sell, but every player at the club has their price — though McNeil will not come cheap. He’s contracted to the club for another three years, with an option to extend that by a further year. It is also understood that at least three other clubs are interested in him, besides Villa.”

Imagine him and Grealish

With his ability to beat players one-on-one – his average of 1.8 dribbles per game in the Premier League is the highest of any Burnley player and double that of Charlie Taylor in second – McNeil could create an exciting tandem with Jack Grealish.

The £50m-rated winger has arguably been one of the few standout performers going forward for the Clarets, and it’s something which has led to Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp raving about him.

He said: “Dwight McNeil is such a good player, lovely left foot, doesn’t stop running. Every time I watch him he gets better and better, he’s got real quality and certainly a player that the top six to eight clubs will be looking at, and that’s no disrespect to Burnley because I don’t like saying that sometimes, but he is that good.”

McNeil’s composure on the ball, something very much akin to Grealish, has led to Burnley manager Sean Dyche hailing the composure that he has when he gets into the final third of the pitch.

He said: “He’s a real talent. He’s a really good player, he’s improving, his calmness at the end – I’m saying get it in the corner – but he cuts in, and his calmness to cross it into a dangerous area, and then gets his reward.

“Before then, his calmness to dribble out of trouble – he’s a really good player, really good, and he can only mature.”

There are a lot of similarities between the way McNeil and Grealish play, and a move for the Burnley winger could help to build a supremely entertaining attacking duo at Villa Park.

Meanwhile, Gregg Evans has dropped a major Aston Villa transfer update…
