Rangers: Ofoborh announcement delights fans

Many Rangers fans have flocked to a tweet that was recently posted by the club’s official Twitter account announcing that the Glasgow club have agreed on a four-year deal with Nnamdi Ofoborh, which is set to begin in the summer.

This tweet includes a link to a post on the Gers’ official website in which it is explained that ‘there will be training compensation payable’ to Bournemouth, with Ofoborh agreeing to move to Ibrox after rejecting a contract extension at the Vitality Stadium.

The 21-year-old midfielder is currently on loan at the Cherries’ EFL Championship rivals Wycombe Wanderers for the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign after which he will join up with the current Scottish Premiership leaders.

His teammate on the south coast, Jack Simpson, will join the Gers immediately, replacing George Edmundson, who joined Derby County.

So, how have these Rangers fans been reacting to this news?

The club’s tweet sharing the Ofoborh news drew a largely positive response from fans of the Glasgow club,  a lot of whom, it seems, can’t wait to see the midfielder at Ibrox.

Phillips tipped to start for Liverpool

Some Liverpool fans suggested that bit-part defender Nathaniel Phillips should start against Everton on Saturday.

The 23-year-old has been ushered into the first-team setup at Anfield this season on the back of the club’s cataclysmic injury crisis, with all three of the Reds’ established centre-backs out with season-ending injuries.

Manager Jurgen Klopp admitted back in October that Phillips was almost sold before the season kicked into gear. His situation would have been far worse had he done so.

In the limited game-time he has spent on the pitch (just 495 minutes of Premier League football and five starts all season), the 6 foot 2 defender has managed to average 4.5 clearances, complete three long balls and, most importantly, win 5.2 aerial duels (Whoscored).

The latter was the critical statistic in the debate that Grizz started on Twitter, after asking the question who should be the centre-back pairing for the weekend’s crucial encounter.

Newcastle’s Fraser must start vs Man Utd

Steve Bruce should unleash Newcastle attacker Ryan Fraser on Manchester United this Sunday after seeing Dwight Gayle struggle to occupy the right-wing role at Chelsea.

The Toon boss had to unlock a new plan at Stamford Bridge after losing top-scorer Callum Wilson for the best part of two months with a hamstring injury, but failed to find the answer in Gayle occupying a wider role.

Gayle was not terrible in south-west London, just uncomfortable being tasked with making the runs out to the wing before cutting back in that Wilson excels at, with the former Crystal Palace man much more of an out-and-out centre-forward.

The Magpies sorely missed Wilson’s ability to stretch defences by drawing players over to the flanks and creating space in the centre for the likes of Miguel Almiron to exploit, and would do well to look toward Fraser for that threat at Old Trafford.

Gayle has the speed to make the runs through the centre and the knowhow to be in the right place at the right time to meet the passes over the shoulder of the last man but proved at Chelsea that he cannot be Bruce’s reimagination of Wilson.

A lack of service at the Bridge meant Gayle recorded just 16 touches before being taken off 64 minutes into his first start of the season in any competition, the least by any Newcastle player, while Isaac Hayden (39), Almiron (35), Allan Saint-Maximin (33), Jonjo Shelvey (33) and Joe Willock (32), were never left wanting by that stage, per WhoScored.

Compare that to Wilson’s 57 touches when he scored twice against Everton last month, and in a match were United had 39.1% of the possession to the 34.4% at Chelsea, it is as clear as day how much they lost out by having Gayle on the pitch instead.

Bruce should be able to expect more joy with Gayle on the pitch if the £7m-rated striker can do what he’s best at, rather than trying to plug round holes with square objects.

And that has to be where Fraser steps in, with Bruce recently claiming that he expects the free-agent summer signing to join Saint-Maximin in adding extra firepower to his attack.

“The reason why we’ve took them at the top end is we know what a difference Allan can make to us with that creativity,” Bruce said last month. “And certainly Ryan, when he’s well, when he’s fit, he’s proved that he’s capable too.

“Let’s hope they both stay well because if they do, then I’m quietly convinced that they’ll provide enough ammunition that we need to score, which is always the most difficult thing in the Premier League.”

Fraser is yet to score in the top-flight since moving to St. James’ Park, but appears to have overcome his fitness issues with appearances in five of United’s last six games following a groin injury on the back of a hamstring issue.

He started two of those outings and proved vastly influential in defeat to Crystal Palace, yet the 26-year-old has still only opened six Premier League games all season.

Fraser, dubbed a “little pocket dynamo” by Charlie Nicholas, created a game-high seven goalscoring opportunities against the Eagles as he accounted for almost half of Newcastle’s 15 key balls, more than twice as many as he has offered in any of his other top-flight appearances in black and white to date, per WhoScored.

The Scotland international also delivered nine accurate crosses at home to the Selhurst Park outfit, three times his previous single-game best achieved against Everton and Leeds, to further highlight how he can offer the width against Manchester United that Gayle lacked at Chelsea.

As also outlined by Hampden chief Steve Clarke in October, Fraser can provide “that little bit of spark” and that’s what Bruce needs to call upon at Old Trafford on Sunday.

If Bruce does not start the £13m-rated Fraser on the right-wing at Old Trafford, he will surely live to regret the decision – especially if Gayle is to be the one favoured out wide again.

Daniel Levy under Mourinho spell at Spurs

According to a report by The Independent, dropping a behind the scenes claim, some close to the Tottenham Hotspur boardroom believe chairman Daniel Levy is ‘enchanted’ by manager Jose Mourinho and is one of the few who still holds belief in this season ending well.

Daniel Levy sent Tottenham accusation

Levy appointed Mourinho as a high profile successor to previous boss and fan favourite Mauricio Pochettino back in 2019, describing him as ‘one of the two best managers in the world’ alongside Pep Guardiola (The Independent).

Journalist Miguel Delaney, writing for the Independent, claims this is a view entirely out of date and has shared what those close to the board think of Levy behind the scenes in a damning message.

Indeed, per this report, there are those inside the club who believe he is ‘enchanted’ by Mourinho and somewhat under his spell – all while being one of the only few people who still believe the 2020/2021 season can have a happy ending.

Transfer Tavern take

The next three matches could prove pivotal to the Portuguese’ career in north London, with the pressure on to come away with much needed Premier League victories against Burnley, Fulham and Crystal Palace.

Tottenham also have a Carabao Cup final against league leaders Man City in April, and if all goes well, Mourinho could still turn this season around.

However, some around the club already believe this managerial reign should come to an end, and only time will tell whether Levy opts to make the change as he is accused of being under the boss’ spell.

Leeds contemplate Costa swoop

According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa loves Douglas Costa and his ‘technical qualities’ – with the Whites becoming a ‘possible solution’ for the Brazilian this summer.

Costa, who has only sporadically featured on loan at Bayern Munich this season, is in all likelihood not going to secure a permanent move to the Allianz Arena according to this report.

Leeds United touted as possible move for Costa

The 30-year-old’s future could be decided in the summer as a result, and Calciomercato have now touted Leeds as a potential destination for the winger due to Bielsa’s alleged fondness.

They claim that Leeds’ interest could become more concrete in the ‘coming weeks’, a prospect which may delight parent club Juve who wish to sell Costa for at least €11 million (£9.4 million).

Transfer Tavern take

While Bielsa is allegedly wowed by Costa and his ability, it is questionable whether he would be the right move for Leeds given his torrid injury record and lack of game time over this last season (WhoScored).

The 31-cap attacker has started just three games for Bayern since moving on loan from Serie A, but only time will tell whether Leeds’ interest does increase over these next few weeks ahead of the summer window.

West Ham scout Slavia Prague’s Kuchta

David Moyes should urge another West Ham United raid on Slavia Prague to sign striker Jan Kuchta in the summer transfer window.

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, the Irons joined a number of Premier League clubs in eying a summer swoop for Kuchta after scouting the Slavia Prague star in the Europa League.

It is claimed that the London Stadium natives had scouts observe the 24-year-old in person during Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Rangers, where there were representatives of Newcastle United, Southampton and Brighton & Hove Albion also in attendance.

West Ham already have two of Slavia Prague’s former stars at the London Stadium in eight-goal top scorer Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal, who Moyes has described as “excellent”.

Kuchta has now caught the Hammers’ attention with his efforts in the Europa League this season, where he has scored twice and assisted two goals in seven games after hitting a brace against Ligue 1 side Nice in the group stage.

He helped Jindeich Trpisovsky’s side eliminate Leicester City from the competition in the round of 32 and could be the next to make a Premier League move as talent spotters look at Czech football as a key market.

The former Czech Republic under-21 international has also ruffled the back of the net 11 times and set up five goals in 17 Fortuna Liga fixtures this term, having excelled on his return to the Sinobo Stadium following a spell with Slovan Liberec.

Kuchta had struggled to establish himself at Slavia Prague before an initial loan move to Liberec which they turned permanent last year, but has kicked on magnificently since being re-signed in the summer.

His haul of 13 goals and seven assists in all competitions has marked the 2020/21 campaign as Kuchta’s most prolific yet, eclipsing the 10 goals and three assists penned across all competitions last term.

Should West Ham sign Kuchta?

Much can change for Kuchta between now and the end of the season, but West Ham are heading on the right path by scouting the 24-year-old.

Kuchta’s return to Slavia was a mostly sombre affair in the early months of his homecoming, but he turned a corner at the start of the year to net seven of his Fortuna Liga goals over his side’s four games played in January.

If the Slavia product is able to keep up a hit rate of that level, Moyes would absolutely have to urge West Ham to launch a swoop for the forward, having seen Soucek and Coufal adapt to the Premier League so quickly and become key components of his line-up.

Trpisovsky has lauded Kuchta for his endless work rate beyond his goals as well, noting [via quotes shared by iSport] how the forward is “an aggressive player who is annoying to the defender”.

The Slavia boss has also claimed of Kuchta: “I think the hardest part is his hard work and hunger. He goes for those situations and that rewards him with goals.

“That’s how it is in football. It’s about quality, the choice of place and teammates who can find it. He works for the team, does not spare a step and is optimistic in the line.”

Coufal’s endless energy is also one of the aspects which Moyes loves most about the right-back, suggesting he could quickly feel the same way about Kuchta if West Ham were to be successful in edging out their Premier League rivals to his signature this summer.

“I couldn’t keep him off the training pitch yesterday [the day after the Aston Villa game],” Moyes told The Athletic last month. “I wanted them to have a rest and just stay in but he’s on a different level.”

Claim dropped on potential NUFC takeover

A football finance guru has outlined a potential ‘problem’ that Newcastle United may have that could well harm their chances of a takeover at St. James’ Park.

Speaking to Football Insider, Kieran Maguire has claimed that potential new investors would be inheriting a ‘problem cost’ in Joelinton should they take over in the North East, which may see the Tyneside club’s chances of a takeover potentially harmed as a result:

“Newcastle’s squad is worth more money because they’ve invested more. That has good aspects and bad aspects to it.

“The elephant in the room is the Joelinton factor. Who’s going to sign him given that he’s not delivered for two seasons?

“You’re inheriting a problem cost which you won’t have to the same extent at Derby. There is more flexibility with them.”

Joelinton may be a problem

It is easy to see where Maguire is coming from in terms of the Magpies having a player like Joelinton still at the club.

The Toon reportedly signed the 24-year-old from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim for a club-record £40m transfer fee, which is big money for a club like NUFC to gamble on.

Joelinton’s time at Newcastle has been nothing shy of miserable ever since, with a mere seven goals scored in 71 games in total over all competitions across the last two consecutive terms (Transfermarkt).

The potential new owners would almost certainly not be able to offload the Brazilian striker for anything near to whet they would hope, and so they would likely be left with him stuck on their wage bill.

Nonetheless, any prospective buyers may well be put off by the current valuation of the Magpies squad as Maguire suggests, with some players such as Joelinton potentially becoming a ‘problem’ for them.

Phillips backs Sunderland for top-two finish

Kevin Phillips has exclusively told Football FanCast that he believes Sunderland are “capable” of finishing in the automatic promotion places this season.

Lee Johnson’s team have won six of their previous seven League One matches to move into top-two contention, and have already enjoyed success in the Papa John’s Trophy following Sunday’s victory over Tranmere courtesy of Lynden Gooch’s second-half strike at Wembley.

Sunderland’s impressive recent form has seen them climb to fourth in the third-tier standings, just two points behind second-placed Peterborough United, who currently occupy the second automatic promotion place.Much of Sunderland’s good results have been down to the goals of Charlie Wyke, whose the League One top scorer with 21, and Phillips reckons that their automatic hopes could rely on the fitness and form of the former Bradford City striker. He told Football FanCast: “I think they’re hitting form at the right time. My only concern is if they were to lose Charlie [Wyke] or if he was to go off the boil, or if they were to lose [Aiden] McGeady, the two players that have been so influential in this run.“I think defensively they’re looking fairly solid, Dion Sanderson, whose come in, has looked really strong. From what I’ve seen, they’re capable of finishing in the top-two.”Sunderland travel to Accrington Stanley on Wednesday evening knowing another three more points could send them into the top-two for the first time since April 2019.

Windass backs Klopp to stay at Liverpool

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Premier League striker Dean Windass has backed Jurgen Klopp to stay at Liverpool for at least one more season.

Following huge success in both the Champions League and Premier League in recent seasons, the Reds have made a tame defence of their first title for 30-years,  although long-term injuries to both centre-back pair Virgil Van Dijk and Joe Gomez have hardly helped Liverpool’s case.

In fact, following five league defeats from their previous seven matches, Klopp’s team are now in serious danger of missing out on finishing in the top-four altogether, although their victory at Wolves on Monday night did help their case.

Meanwhile, Klopp himself has been linked with the Germany job, with Joachim Low set to leave after the European Championships, although the Reds boss quickly denied those claims and admitted that he remains focused on Liverpool.

And Windass believes that Klopp will want at least another season at Anfield to pay back the returning Reds supporters for their wretched campaign.

He told Football FanCast:

“Well there’s talk of him taking over the national team, isn’t there? But I don’t think he’ll leave. When life gets back to normal and supporters get back, I think he’ll have one more season because of the supporters not being there. He’s got to earn the right to say ‘the supporters have been with me before COVID, but I want to pay them back’.

“I think he will stay for one more season.”

Liverpool are next in action after the international break when they face Arsenal in the Premier League on April 4.

Liverpool fans flock to FFP development

According to a report by journalist Tancredi Palmeri, UEFA are set to blow the whistle on Financial Fair Play and integrate a new system of financial control which will ‘leave much more freedom of spending’ – prompting many Liverpool fans to erupt at this news.

Indeed, the Liverpool Echo also claim this FFP development may have major repercussions on the Reds – with UEFA’s possible move handing rivals the chance to ‘wield their financial power’ whilst Liverpool struggle by comparison.

According to Palmeri, a fresh system ‘will be announced’ that may allow much more freedom in this regard as many Reds erupt with their verdicts on social media.

Liverpool’s careful transfer strategy under Fenway Sports Group is set to be ‘locked in’ no matter what comes of this news, with the club potentially having to rely even more on their tried and trusted approach (Liverpool Echo).

Taking this into account, it’s arguably understandable why one Red believes Palmeri’s FFP update is ‘disgraceful’, especially if the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City go on to spend huge amounts this summer.
