Liverpool fans react as Joe Gomez is ruled out of Bayern Munich clash

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after Jurgen Klopp revealed that Joe Gomez will not make the Champions League last 16 first leg against Bayern Munich.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference before the game against West Ham, the German boss said: “No, I don’t think so. After that any time, but we will see”, when quizzed if the former Charlton defender would be fit to face the Bavarians.

Virgil van Dijk is also out for the crunch clash against the reigning Bundesliga champions, meaning that Klopp may have to deploy Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren against the likes of Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben – truly frightful stuff for fans of the Reds.

Be sure to check out the incredible story of the man who rose from a Tanzanian refugee camp to become one of Australia’s biggest football stars in the video below…

21-year-old Gomez suffered a fractured leg in the 3-1 win against Burnley at Turf Moor in December, and whilst the Merseysiders have managed to stay top of the league in his absence, fans are worried about dropping out of the Champions League without him.

Well, if their reactions on Twitter are anything to go by…

‘Belter’ – Chris Sutton leads the praise for Brown’s shock goal

[ad_pod ]

Chris Sutton led the praise for Scott Brown’s unlikely blockbuster against St. Johnstone.

For the first time in two years the Hoops skipper was on the score-sheet with his stunning strike almost worth the wait.

Fans, team-mates, opponents and pundits were left stunned by the goal which killed off St. Johnstone’s hopes as Zander Clark dived in vain to prevent his side going 2-0 down within 10 minutes.

The goal was the highlight of another stellar performance from the Hoops skipper who recently signed a new contract to extend his Celtic career.

Back in November, Celtic hit a purple patch of form that had some fans questioning whether there was a place for the 33-year-old when Brendan Rodgers’ side pass with pace.

Throughout his career Brown has been told what he can’t do but since the winter break he has reminded the doubters why he has been picked more than 500 times for Celtic and been captain under four very different managers.

Here’s a look at how Chris Sutton and other Celtic fans reacted to Brown’s goal on Twitter…

Benkovic hopeful that ‘he won’t be out for a long time’

[ad_pod ]

Filip Benkovic has spoken out for the first time since suffering a serious ankle injury in the 3-0 win over Hamilton Accies last month, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

What’s the word?

The defender has missed Celtic’s last three matches and isn’t expected to play again until March.

Jozo Simunovic has been partnered by Dedryck Boyata or Kris Ajer in those matches with Celtic’s defensive options being stretched to the limit.

Benkovic has been Celtic’s best defender by some distance since joining on loan from Leicester, instantly making an improvement at the back and helping steer the club through to the last 32 of the Europa League.

The Scottish Sun reports the 21-year-old as saying:

“Up until the injury, everything was super. I was so happy. I have to do all the examinations, then we will know the diagnosis and recovery time.

“I enjoy being at Celtic, the coach trusts me and I have played a lot of big games. Hopefully I won’t be out for a long time.”

Celtic’s best option

A fully fit Benkovic is by far Celtic’s best central defender. He’ll be back to Leicester City in May so they have to make the most of every match before then.

February is a write-off for the Croatian but hopefully he is fit and ready by March with the third Glasgow derby clash at the end of that month.

Whoever plays alongside Benkovic seems to raise their game. Not many 21-year-olds have that impact or maturity. Hopefully his absence isn’t too costly.

Dortmund’s Axel Witsel slams Premier League before Tottenham clash

[ad_pod ]

Borussia Dortmund star Axel Witsel is holding nothing back ahead of their Champions League clash with Tottenham, suggesting the Premier League is overrated due to “media hype”.

Tottenham welcome Dortmund to Wembley on Wednesday evening in what is sure to be an absolutely enthralling encounter.

The Lilywhites have grinded out results in the absence of Harry Kane and Dele Alli, but the visit of a Dortmund side who drew 3-3 with Hoffenheim at the weekend will surely bring goals.

While many would consider the Bundesliga to be a weaker league outside of the big two teams though, Witsel has claimed it is just as good as England’s top flight.

“I do not think the Premier League is better than the Bundesliga on the whole,” he told Sport Buzzer, as reported by The Evening Standard.

“It’s all about the media hype. Far more people in the world see the Premier League on TV, because it’s broadcast almost everywhere.

“For historical reasons, the international media are more geared to England than to Germany, Italy or France. But I do not see any serious difference in the quality of football.”

The Belgian international is right to feel confident, as his side are flying at the top of the Bundesliga, five points ahead of Liverpool’s Champions League opponents Bayern Munich.

However, he wouldn’t be the first player to talk big before an important knock-out match and go on to regret it, and Spurs fans will be hoping that is the case here.

Liverpool involved in eight-club race to sign Benfica star Joao Felix

[ad_pod ]

As reported by The Mirror, Liverpool are amongst a number of clubs interested in signing Benfica’s attacking midfield sensation Joao Felix, who is sending shockwaves around Europe as a result of his performances over in Portugal.

What’s the word, then?

The Reds, along with Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, are all interested in securing the 19-year-old playmaker’s signature, although it will reportedly take a huge £105m fee to do so.

Felix has already hit seven goals and recorded three assists in just eight league starts for Benfica this season, and is viewed as one of the hottest properties on the market as his stock looks set to continue growing.

As per the aforementioned article, Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo is said to be the teenager’s idol, although a move to Turin to link up with the 33-year-old looks unlikely as the Old Lady don’t appear to be getting involved in the race to sign him.

Whose position would be under threat if Felix signed for Liverpool?

If Jurgen Klopp’s Reds did manage to fend off Europe’s biggest clubs to bring Felix to Anfield, then Naby Keita’s place in the team could potentially come under threat despite arriving at the club less than a year ago.

The Guinean international has had a slow start to his Liverpool career, but has picked up his form of late thanks to a continued run in the team, where his ability to get on the ball and drive forward through the centre has caught the eye.

Felix is a tricky central attacking midfielder who likes to pick the ball up in the No.10 role, the area that Keita enjoys dribbling into, so it would be tricky to see how the pair would play together.

If Felix does end up costing the reported £105m fee, one would assume that Klopp would intend to play him in the first team over Keita, which would all but end his involvement as a consistent first-team regular.

Sean Dyche’s fantastic Burnley turnaround proves sacking isn’t always the right option

Time was ticking away on John Dyche’s career after Boxing Day 2018. Following three consecutive losses, including a crushing 1-5 home loss to Everton, his six-year reign seemed to be over. However, rather than making a rash decision, the club decided to give his first-in-command more time to turn things around.

Well, hasn’t he done so magnificently? After the boxing day loss to Everton, The Clarets are now unbeaten in their last eight Premier League games. Not only have they managed to defeat the lower-table teams they initially struggled against, but they’ve also taken points from the big guns.

In the space of a few months, Dyche’s managed to reform the Burnley of old, which had managed a stunning seventh place finish under him last season. Lady Luck played in his favour as well. The injuries calmed down, key players returned and the back-to-back losses propelled Dyche into giving his players a reality check, therefore reigniting their flame.

Burnley have only conceded seven goals in eight games, winning five and drawing three since that Boxing Day humiliation. Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes have created nightmares for oppositions’ defences with their physicality and chemistry, contributing in 10 out of their 14 goals scored in the unbeaten run.

Tom Heaton’s inspired work in goal reinvigorated Burnley’s defenders to retain their rock-solid nature, reigniting the Clarets mean defensive reputation. Garlick’s decision to keep faith in Dyche’s worked wonders and the likes of Chelsea and Everton should monitor Burnley’s revival before sacking their own managers.

It’s become clear that, at least sometimes, patience is the answer.

Lewis Holtby holds lingering regret over Tottenham spell

[ad_pod ]

Lewis Holtby has said that he feels he deserved more chances at Tottenham Hotspur, per The Independent.

The German midfielder spent two years at Spurs following a move from FC Schalke 04 but struggled for minutes, making a total of 42 appearances for the club.

What’s the word?

Holtby is currently with Hamburg in the second-tier of German football after seeing his stock rapidly diminish in recent years.

Capped 24 times by a Germany Under-21 team that also featured Mesut Ozil and three times by the senior team, it appeared that Holtby was destined for the top after breaking through at Schalke.

A total of 79 appearances at the club earned him a move to Spurs in 2015, with the north London club paying £1.5million for his signature. He had initially agreed to join on a free transfer in the summer but the transfer was accelerated and completed in January.

However, he struggled to nail down a spot in the team, falling behind the likes of Mousa Dembele and Christian Eriksen in the pecking order, and he soon looked for a way out, joining Fulham on loan prior to another short-term move to Hamburg, which eventually became permanent.

And he has told The Independent that he felt that, while he was perhaps naive, he was mistreated in north London.

“I loved the time in England,” Holby said. “You can’t compare Fulham or even back then Schalke to Tottenham. It was definitely frustrating though because I had good spells where I felt I deserved more game time. But I did expect more of myself, I had more expectations to succeed.

“I thought I had the quality but maybe I was a bit naïve. I made too many rash decisions. I wasn’t as professional as I am now in a lot of things. There’s a lot of things that I’ve gained now over the years and I think if I was there now I would act differently, I think I have more in my locker.

“I was so eager to play, so desperate to start week-in-week-out that I made the move [to Fulham and then to Germany]. You get very stressed in periods when you don’t get the game time. It’s different now, I have more experience.

“Sometimes, when you’re young, you’re eager, but you need a bit of patience and to push yourself even more. That’s how it works at the highest level and maybe that was missing a bit from my point of view at that age.”

Brought on himself

Holtby did not have the patience nor the willingness to stick it out at Spurs due to his delusions of grandeur.

A signing designed to add depth to the squad, the midfielder was, admittedly, used sparingly in the Premier League and was rarely picked from the start.

That, however, was because of his lack of ability in the first-team, rather than anything else.

Against the likes of Dembele and Eriksen, Holtby simply didn’t cut the mustard; a good passer of the ball and an industrious player, he was a water-carrier and nothing more.

His move to Fulham did not work out either. Indeed, he came in to help them avoid relegation. They went down.

Now at Hamburg, another club with whom he has been relegated, it appears he has found his level.

As for his fall from grace, he has nobody to blame but himself.

Crystal Palace fans laud Cheikhou Kouyate after convincing win over Burnley

[ad_pod ]

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to heap praise on Cheikhou Kouyate, after the midfielder contributed to the impressive 3-1 win over Burnley with a magnificent individual performance.

The Senegalese international was making his 18th Premier League start of the season since his summer move from West Ham, and has quickly become a fans’ favourite at Selhurst Park as a result of his tireless performances in the middle of the field.

The 29-year-old grabbed an assist against the Clarets, as well as making five clearances and two key passes to help the Eagles onto 33 points for the season, easing any lingering worries over relegation.

Palace have now nabbed two of their key players from the Hammers having signed James Tomkins from the Irons back in 2016, which will certainly annoy the east London-based side’s fans.

In the south Londoners’ case, however, Kouyate has been heralded as a steal, with many Palace fans on Twitter quick to laud the former Anderlecht man for his committed displays…

Leeds fans react to Patrick Bamford fitness boost

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa confirmed in his press conference on Monday that striker Patrick Bamford is fit and will start for the Whites against Reading at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday, as reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

This news regarding the 25-year-old constitutes a huge boost for the Elland Road club. Bamford has been in fine form recently, having scored four goals in his last four Championship outings, including the winner against the Robins last time out.

Are fans being priced out of the Championship as well as the Premier League? The angry Bolton fan in the video below certainly believes so…

Not only is the English forward Leeds’ most prolific scorer at this time, he is also Bielsa’s only reliable option available for leading the line. With Kemar Roofe still sidelined with injury, the Whites absolutely need Bamford to be fit and they have very little quality striking depth beyond him.

Following the announcement, plenty of Leeds fans took to Twitter to celebrate the positive news. The Elland Road faithful will hope that the centre-forward is able to continue his fine form against the Royals on Tuesday…

Aston Villa must win battle to sign Tyrone Mings with Southampton lurking

[ad_pod ]

Southampton have recently joined the race to sign Bournemouth’s Tyrone Mings who is currently on loan at Aston Villa. But should Villa focus on acquiring the defender too?

What’s the word?

As reported by the Sunday Mirror (17/03, page 72), via HITC, Southampton are interested in Mings, who could make the move to the Saints in the summer once his loan deal with Villa expires.

Dean Smith signed the centre-back on loan from Bournemouth in January and the 26-year-old has been an instant hit at Villa Park. However, he’s attracting interest from elsewhere which could be troublesome for the Midlands club if they remain in the Championship next season.

However, there is a unique clause in Mings’ loan deal from the Cherries which means Villa can match any bid offered by another club in the summer. As a result, they will be hoping they’ll be able to compete with the likes of Southampton who are sniffing around the versatile defender.

Preparation for Premier League life?

The loanee has played a crucial role in Villa’s season since arriving at the club with Smith’s men flying high in the play-off places. If they get promoted then a move for the Bath-born player must become imperative.

No other central defender at the club this season has made as many interceptions or tackles per game as Mings. His reading of the game is superb and considering he has Premier League experience, his addition to a newly promoted side, should they go up, would be significant.

The Villans have shipped 54 goals this season, that’s more than anyone else in the top ten and rivals some of the division’s strugglers. But since Mings has arrived, he’s stabilised things by helping the club keep four clean sheets in the nine games he’s featured in.

His efforts have been crucial and the way he’s fitted into the Villa side with relative ease means he should be their main summer target to assure defensive stability. In Mings, the club has a ready-made Premier League talent – they simply must win the race to obtain his services on a permanent basis.
